  • Join me in "Alaska's Gold River," a captivating film about the legendary Klondike River. Flowing just 95 miles from the Alaskan town of Eagle as the crow flies to the town of Dawson City on the Klondike River in Canada, the Alaskan town of Eagle is actually closer to Dawson City and the gold fields than the nearest other Canadian town of Carmacks, a tiny community that is 220 miles away from Dawson City.
So while the river is actually in Canada, the river was much more widely accessed through the routes going through Alaska, with prospectors setting off to cross the border and get to Dawson City in Canada. Setting off from the Alaskan town of Eagle, the river has strong ties to Alaskan history, heritage, and culture.
This is why I call it Alaska's River of Gold, even though technically the Klondike River flows through the wilderness of the Yukon Territory in Canada. It is a common misconception that the Klondike River was in Alaska, and this is due to the historical nature of the ties between the Klondike River, Alaska, Eagle, and Dawson City in Canada. It was far easier to get supplies to Dawson City by buying items in Eagle, Alaska, to supply Dawson City in Canada.
This river, the Klondike River, is known for its pivotal role in the 1896 gold rush. This river attracted over 100,000 prospectors and yielded about 12.5 million ounces of gold, valued today at approximately $31.25 billion. Explore the enduring legacy of bustling towns and abandoned gold rush relics along its banks. Despite centuries of mining, an estimated 1.5 million ounces of gold, worth around $3.75 billion, still remain, continuing to draw modern prospectors.
Discover the Klondike's rich history and the indomitable spirit of adventure that still thrives in Alaska's wilderness.
