- Mark Zeigler Yacht Sales invited me down to check out a boat that I am willing to bet doesn't stay on the market for long!! One of the most highly sought after cruisers for doing the Great Loop is the Mainship 390. This particular example has completed the loop twice, and is ready to go again!! Buying a boat that has completed the loop guarantees that you don't need to worry about range or size restrictions.
The boat benefits from both a flybridge and a lower helm, allowing you to cruise in comfort regardless of the weather outside. There is even side door access directly from the helm to the main deck making docking and lock gates far easier. As for maneuverability, you have a powerful 370hp Yanmar 6LYA-STP controlling the stern, and a bow thruster to ease the bow into place.
The accommodation is fully air conditioned, and comprises of the owners stateroom on the bow, a twin guest cabin to port, and a heads compartment with separate toilet and shower to starboard. You also have an open plan design with the saloon, galley, and lower helm being altogether, with plenty of headroom and natural light throughout.

I agree on both accounts. These "affordable" boats always seem like an eye-opener of what's available for the more average family.
Do boats that size ever have a watermaker? Not sure how a watermaker works but id like to learn. Isnt Yanmar like a Toyota of marine diesels? Ultra reliable Japanese engine?
That's a great description of Yanmars. They are normally very economical, cheap to service and maintain (relatively speaking), and very reliable. Having cruised Mexico twice for 8 months each time we gave a water maker great consideration. We weighed out the cost, space, maintenance and power needed. On our Catalina 36 sailboat we didn't want a generator as we had 450 watts of solar which could have powered it with our 5 batteries and 2000 watt inverter. However we used power to make ice quietly 4 hours a day and never turned off the refrigerator. We basically sail the coast for 2500 miles and realize that every we go people are drinking water. We opted for 4 blue 5 gallon jerry cans for $100.00 and saved $5000.00 for fun!

The central bunks are too claustrofobic for me.
This is a question that I hope won't take too much of your time. I am thinking about purchasing a boat like this when I retire in 2 years. However, I have no practical experience except for fishing boats and water skiing boats on local lakes here in East Texas. If I wanted to become proficient in how to properly, and safely, operate a boat like this in the gulf of Mexico and through the great loop, what sort of training or certification would I need and is that available in the greater Galveston, Texas area? For the record, I have no interest in boating any more than a couple miles, or less, offshore so I imagine that may cut down on the amount of training I would require. Maybe not.... Thanks in advance for any advice sir. Love the reviews....very thorough. John B.
Hey John, thanks for the support and kind words. If you are not running a charter boat etc, you technically don't need certification but training is always a good idea to boost skill and confidence.

I just found out this one was recently sold. As to the Bayliner, it looks like it ranges from $100k to $150k on Yachtworld or Boat Trader

I would say, for the most part, boat prices have dropped significantly over the past 12 months across the board.

We've watched it a second time and have a question or two.
What certificates or stipulations might there be for operating a vessel such as this? In Canada we possess a pleasure craft operators card. I've owned smaller boats like the Stingray 19 foot i/o, and 17 foot lund. I have been certified to operate a VHF.

@martincorinnetempelman2173 officially, I believe you are in the clear for Florida. I'd recommend getting a good captain for some own boat tuition to help give you not only extra skills, but extra confidence.

This is great - how can we bring this to the west coast of Canada 🇨🇦. One day, we shall own a mainship!
Thanks! When I was living in Scotland, it was easy and relatively cheap to haul boats like this by road all over Europe. Over in the States, however, you don't see as many tall loads due to all the traffic lights that hang overhead. I'm not sure this could be delivered at a cost-effective price, but I couldn't say for sure.

What would the range be at 8 knots with 300 gallons ?
I was doing some digging on this on Google and someone said "My 2003 390 has a 370 Yanmar. I cruise at about 1900 rpm which gives me about 8.5 kts. GPH burn is about 4.5. I have run at 1500 rpm and 7 kts and gotten about 3 GPH burn".
If this is true, I'm thinking 500 miles is the target number or so, giving you extra for reserve and generator etc.
I love this one. Wonder how I would get it here to Seattle, and then tell my wife we boat a boat. My be trouble on the horizon.
Oh I know exactly what you mean 😁 I think my wife prefers me filming the multi million dollar boats as there is zero temptation there. Once I step foot on a more affordable boat I love, I have to remember and behave 😁

Well, Depends on where you're at. Florida, $600.00 per month Average. Gulf Coast From Panama Handle West. $800.00. So.Padrae Is. If ya know where to go as cheep as $300 per month all inclusive too. I am a Cheepskate. I wanna keep all my Hard earned Money.

Why would you think it is Over Priced? I would Love to hear the Response on that? According to my Past Experience, it is a A Good Deal, Not a Steal, maybe Not even a Great deal, But a Good Deal. For Jacksonville, Good. I could keep this is Ft.Meyers, or Pensacola for 300-400/month in Dockage. Or So.Padrae,400-500 Dockage! I would live aboard for 600-750/ month Grand Kayman's. I would now live the Main Part of the Great Lakes Area! I am a Musician so Great Way to Entertain and Live Very Confortable.
