  • Everyone had a first day in RC… EVERYONE! In Episode 007 of our “Get Into RC” video series, we are going to talk to you about the differences between electric and nitro RC cars. Electric cars are a great choice for those who want to jump right into driving their new model with something they can simply turn on and off. Electric cars are also great for areas where space is limited or there are noise concerns. Nitro RC cars are fast, fun and may require you to purchase some additional. When buying a nitro car, you also need to consider engine tuning and noise levels. There is no easy way for us to pick the right type of power source for you so take a look at this video to help steer you on what style is best for YOU!

[Nitro car tips I wish I knew before owning my first nitro car]
(1.) Especially on a new car, unscrew the glow plug from the car and test to see if it glows a bright orange. My car wouldn't start and I had no idea that the one the came with the car was hardly heating up. They don't cost too much so it doesn't hurt to check and have a spare.
(2.) Prime the fuel through the tubes so some of it is reaching the engine, thus letting it start.
(3.) Make sure the idle setting on the remote is not preventing the car from starting or is set too high, it will eigther struggle to start if at all or take off on you after it starts. Usually, a 1mm gap is enough. the car should hardly creep forward by default.
(4.) Look up what percentage fuel mixture is recommended for your engine and only use a nitro RC car fuel
(5.) Refer to the default tuning in the car's manual to find a starting point for tuning the engine for your location
(6.) If the car is not starting, the pulling gets tougher, and fuel is spitting out the exhaust, you likely flooded the engine. Not a big deal, just stop and unscrew the glow plug, tip the car on its side, cover the hole with a paper towel, and pull the cord a few times to clear excess fuel from the car and you can try again perhaps with a leaner adjustment (less fuel more air).
(7.) Keep an eye on the batteries in the remote so you don't lose connection mid drive due to loss of battery life. Rechargeable batteries are nice to have so you don't have to keep buying tons of AA batteries
(8.) Spraying Windex on the cars wire antennae can help with feeding it into the small plastic tube that sticks into the car.
(9.) Be patient and break the car in properly on a tank or two of fuel to help lubricate the engine and break in the moving parts. It will help with the longevity of the car.

My first two vehicles, which I still have, are nitro. I've been out of this for 13 years and am waiting for my electric Xray T4. I went nitro to start because I always had cheapo electric rcs and wanted something different with a heart and soul. I'm in the process of getting my Savage and Nitro RS4 2 back in prime running condition.
If you grew up with tablets and would enjoy life as an avatar then electric is for you. If you enjoy putting things together and understanding your cars then nitro is 100% more satisfying.

  • @thesollylama130
    @thesollylama130 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

I have had a bunch of R/C vehicles going back to the 1980's. I've always preferred nitro, but electric was much easier for most of that time. Still is, but nitro has come so far in that time that it's essentially a wash. Nitro is much louder, which is a consideration. Also, if you want to race, nitro can only be run outdoors while electrics can be used indoor and out. Many tracks have indoor off-road (carpet or dirt) courses as well so electrics get to take advantage of both while nitro is restricted to outdoors.
My favorite thing about nitro (other than the sound and smell) is that you can run them as long as you have fuel. Electrics just don't run long on batteries and unless you buy a pile of those, your time is limited. Batteries also degrade over time requiring replacing.
Nitro is just more up front. Up front costs are higher (although again, batteries add up for electrics) and there is more 'stuff' required. Break in and tuning are front loaded efforts. But once you do those things, it's pretty much fire and forget.
I think for the total beginner electric is more accessible but if you are bitten by the R/C bug, you will end up eyeballing nitro sooner rather than later.

$25+ a gallon for fuel compared to $30~$50+ for a battery that will last you YEARS! Not to mention Nitro engines will last you about 20 gallons of fuel tops before needing to be rebuilt or replaced which will run you $150+ easy. Brushed motors are like $15+ to replace and will last for years if maintained and Burshless motors will last even longer if maintained.

I’m a local mechanic here and honestly, truly unbiased, I would go for the electric myself. There simple and most people that are actually using rcs are just getting into the hobby( lets be honest here.) for me, their much more reliable. Now I’ve had multiple nitros and gassers and to this day I still prefer electric. They tend to be fast enough, and their cheaper to operate( again, most people are just getting into the hobby.) most people who don’t work on engines will get tired of having them give out because they aren’t doing proper maintenance. Overall, I’m a mechanic and I get no better feeling driving a nitro or gas than I do an electric. Maybe it’s because I’m used to working big diesels and nitro engines aren’t loud whatsoever. There my take, from a mechanics standpoint.

Ironically a nitro car uses more batteries than an electric car. Which do I prefer? I like both for different reasons. An electric car is typically more reliable, require less maintenance and have more consistent performance, but if you're a tinkerer you might actually enjoy the extra tuning and maintenance with a nitro car and nitro cars do have a certain charm to them IMO. Another big advantage to electric being less noisy though is that you can drive them basically anywhere and at all times in the day.

Unless you're out in the desert, noise is always a concern. The town council never gets together to close an electric track, it's always gas or nitro and it's always because of the noise and smoke. Electric is the way, quiet, actually faster and much much more reliable IMHO.

I had a Kyosho Raider 2WD when I was 12 or 13 (almost 30 years algo), and I enjoyed it a lot even although It wasn't fast at all.
Then I got an Inferno DX (basic versión of the first generation of a famous Kyosho car), which is still in a box in a storage room in my parent's hause.
It was a beast as compared to the electric car, but I think I wasn't able to use more than 2 litres of fuel in years. Every time I wanted to ride it, something broke and there wasn't any hobby store in less than 60km (you know that online stores didn't exist in 90's).
So, at the end I parked the car and I forgot this hobby.
Some months ago, in my 40 birthday, I wanted to ressurect my hobby, but starting from RC model airplanes.
I got an electric plane, and I was surprised of how powerful the electric motors are. Now I am seeing that electric RC cars are also 10 times faster (and batteries have 10 times more capacity) than my old Raider.
I think that one of the birthday gifts for my son will be a 1:10 RC car... 😆

Man I love nitro’s. Just no matter how well you treat them they are never reliable. Every-time you turn on or off those engines they are wearing down more and more. Until eventually a con-rod snaps or the engine seizes. And then you are down an extra 300$ for a new nitro engine. Not to mention fuel is 50$ a gallon 💀 yes I know if you don’t use your nitro all the time then it will last quite awhile but still. But then again man I am a sucker for that smell and that sound. And the satisfaction of getting a 9+ year old Traxxas 3.3 engine to start up is something else. Until after a few weeks of maintaining it and you decide to go out for a rip and the con-rod split in half. Just like my Revo did. Oh well that’s a part of the hobby I guess. Still much prefer electric RC cars. But man am I still a sucker for Nitro’s. (My 9 year old Slayer finally gave out with its ORIGINAL engine. Although I rarely used the thing. Like maybe a couple times every few months. And ever since the covid I haven’t used it for 3 years. I’m surprised the engine even turned at all. But overall I’d say I had about 46ish hours on the engine and I was bashing the hell out of that thing)

I like nitro better. My friends and I go out to the park and the park don't have no outlet to charge batteries. So we spend all day the day before charging like 25 to 30 batteries. That would be 5 or 6 batteries each. for about 2 maybe 3 hours of play time. Now I do nitro, My revo 3.3 runs great. I changed the little 1200 mah nimh out for a bigger 4200 mah nimh that last all day and burn about 1/2 gallon of fuel. The biggest thing is tuning the carb, oil air filter, and after run care. As fare as cost they both cast about the same, and you will brake things on each one. Bashers more so then others.

Yeah. Ok all you master nitro mechanics out there. I bet you all take your car to a mechanic stop you ego trips. As for all the noobs, Get an electric with a LiPO and blow dirt all over that nitro, as you blow past it. Check out some of the same Slash 4x4s trucks as in the video. The short course truck on the left, slash 4x4 hitting 165+mph. With a castle brushless setup of corse. And a few other things. But still, try that with a smelly nitro. Why be that guy? All Loud and annoying the whole neighborhood, and stinks like a refinery all day. Two stroke fumes of burt oil all in your clothes. All the while thinking he is a master mechanic as that guy twists a tiny flat head screw, to adjust fuel and air mixture. Big woop! Its a stupid tiny two stroke. Get over yourself. Everyone knows in rc which is faster and the waive of the future.

Nitro is like becoming old technology and obsolete their garbage in my opinion. They're super high maintenance they stink the the chassie and everything get really dirty an grimy, and you constantly have to tweak with them! why would you not go electric?? Electric are way more practical efficient and faster than any garbage nitro RC. Plus electric is RTR out of the box where as nitro you have to supply funny gas glow starter an rip on the starter cord. Why would you not just want to have fun straight outta the box!?? All in all nitros or a big fat headache just go electric and have fun! Especially if you're just getting into the hobby.

Nitro all the way. I have both. Electric is boring and it’s like you run two packs and I’m done. Then switch to my nitros and tank after tank after tank some days I go through almost half a gallon. And people that complains that nitro give them problems to start and stuff, is because 1 they don’t break in properly and rush the process. Now engine wears off quick 2 temperature is another issue. People tends to slowly kill engines and therefore hard to start. And 3 they don’t know how to tune properly. Tuning is easy once you understand the process and what to look for. And I have not had any problems with starting any of my nitro cars ever since I disciplined myself and care for the engine. Electric I have seen same shit with people overheating motors and ecs. Same as Li-Po battery fires, bulged and degrading. That issue of charging batteries for an 1 hour or almost 2. And carrying like 10 packs of batteries which are heavy is annoying if you wanna get like a 1:30 minute of fun. Nitro is all day as long as you have fuel. And you get same power until the last drop. Electric the car starts to get slower and slower as the battery hits 10 minutes of runtime.

There was a time and place you had no choice but Nitro. Being I was born in the Nitro Era, I have no problem running eather electric or Nitro. To be honest, I HATE Nitro any more. I can and have totally restored vintage Nitro engines and gotten frozen door stops for RC vehicles going again. That being said, I HATE screwing with them. Having a small engine background helps but I prefer throwing ONE battery or even two into an Electric and go. Unless you know how to tune a Nitro, you are in for total frustration. I know many RC guys that dumped their Nitro vehicles for electric. Same with my RC Plane friends. Even the helicopters are easier today. Unless you know what you are doing( which most noobs do not) Electric is the way to go today.

I know I'm late to this video but 20 years ago I used to hang out at a local hobby shop. I could not tell you the number of people who came in with a nitro vehicle complaining it wasn't running right and all you had to do was look at the high speed needle, and it would literally only be turned out maybe one full turn. This was my problem with nitro way too many people keep tuning and keep tuning and keep turning in trying to get more and more power that doesn't exist from your stock engine nowadays with brushless electric systems even most factory systems with the right battery have plenty of power Now having said that there is some thing to having a well tuned, good quality nitro engine and hearing that thing scream at 40,000 RPMs it can be magical but getting to that point takes a lot of learning self discipline and money just my opinions

Nitro is a pain in the ass to learn but once you do, it's fantastic. more tunable, more visceral, between the smoke the feeling of reverberation you get in your chest as it wizz's by giving you that audible feedback clearly telling what the car is doing and, it can run indefinitely. And if you're a gearhead working on the engine is an entire hobby in itself. Batteries will always be a pain in the ass, charging batteries sucks, changing batteries sucks, more often then not too much bottom end and power, one pack is always different from the others, WAY more expensive and it's just boring in comparison (no noise, smoke, feeling). Batteries only positive is that they're great for beginners, short races and just messing around.

I was hoping you'd show the inside of the cars and explain the different parts. Like nitro and electric both use a servo for steering. Electric uses an electric motor, and a esc to control the power. On nitro, need to explain if its a straight shaft drove straight to the drive shaft or is there a transmission. That's what we want to know.

What do you think: Is a nitro .21 Engine powerful like a 4s Brushless RC Car?

i like electric, i dont have to worry about charging the igniter stick, servo battery. i charge two lipo's at once and bam i've got an hour or more of driving. and nitro fuel isn't sold everywhere so unless u have a real hobby store near you then it gets annoying. i have to drive 2 hours to get to my hobby store. nitro wouldn't work for me. i've ran electric for years. ran nitro to, i prefer electric.

Batts are expensive . For a whole day out you need a lot of batts. Where you just need a tub of cheap juice and your set with thr nitro. The thing is though it all sounds nice but novelty soon wears off when you have to spend 2 hours starting the thing each time. Where as batts bang them in off you go no fkin about

Nitro for sure but I’ve been into RC for about 20 years now my first was a team associated RC 10 Electric stadium truck but nitro is just the best way to truly experience RC and if you need help you guys have enough videos on you tube for guidance

And don't get hobby garde rc cars for kids under 14. 1 they are dangrous. 2 they are fast. Also can get very hot especially nitro cars.

Both are cool but nitro is the coolest. Lot more of a payoff too. Once you get it right you can run it ALL day just keep dumping gas into it. Battery's suck.

The people that hate on nitro fuel cars only hate because they dont know how to run and maintain a proper little engine. They're.... simple..
