i would like to request a retrospective on the dead island franchise , especially because dead island 2 was just announced for feb 3rd. perfect time to make one!
hey aqua I wonder if you know about that secret spot at 38:48 literally 30 feet infront of you as there is something conveniently placed behind that car
Love what you’re talking about with the filming aspect. I noticed skate 1 right away felt just like it did for me when I was skating with my friends. I was always the camera man 😅
Mentioning the 360 flip challenge with Big Black made me sub to you immediately. That's my #1 core memory with the Skate series. Me, my bro, and my 3 cousins took turns trying to get that mission done while watching Total Drama Island 😭. The adolescence was immaculate, and I'll never have that feeling again. It took us at least 45 minutes.
Having trouble with Robs tre flip crook is so relatable. For me that was the challenge that took me from struggling at the game to mastering it. I practiced that tre flip for days. After that the game and all its tricks just made perfect sense to me. I think skater xl and session are cool and great but skate will always be my preferred control scheme and style.
Fantastic video! Skate series has been and will be my favourite skateboarding game of all time. I have not stopped played it since I got into the series 12 years ago. I dont think I will stop at all.
Ayo bois I'm not gonna lie Aqua absolutely cooked me when we were getting footage for this but he was nice enough not to do me dirty in the video. My mans cracked on the sticks
Your last part actually made me realize something. I legit don't remember the last time a multiplayer game released with a fully integrated map editor that people could create and play their own maps. Mario Maker 2? Halo Reach?? That seems like a thing publishers shut down because it's too much free content to give costumers they can't monetize. That's crazy and sad at the same time.
The best thing about the skate games was that you could try to make it as realistic looking as possible. The satisfaction of placing a bench somewhere and doing a simple kick flip to manual to shove-it or something was so refreshing compared to the ridiculous tricks you’d do in tony hawks.
my favorite is the first one, its the hole reason i love skateboarding as a hobby, sport and way of expression. i think the best song choice for the franchise was express yourself by nwa. it is exactly what skating is, a form of expression when people around us didn't care to understand us or where to busy to try. a community of crazy bros with a plank of wood and wheels seeing what lines they can make is one of the most relaxing nirvana feelings you can have as a spectator and a thrill ride unlike any other if your on the board. all in all loved the vid been here since day almost one and im patently excited for the next vid.
This video COMPLETELY took me by surprise. Like most fans, I got into your videos from your excellent breakdown of the Arkham series and have been subbed to you ever since. So, when I saw that you were covering Skate of all series, I was so extremely excited to see what you had to say. Skate 3 is one of those games that took over my childhood for a time. I can remember playing it, finding out how to break, discovering funny glitches, and just destroying my character in the Hall of Meat. I met so many friends that, at the time, were some of the closest people in my life through this game. Thank you for going back and covering this! Tremendous work!
No way!! Skate was literally the beginning of my entire TH-cam channel and it has such a special place in my heart. I never expected you to cover this, but this video is like a dream come true! Thank you Aqua
As someone who was obsessed with skateboarding at the time this came out, this game was everything. I loved the Tony hawk games when I was younger, but once I was actually skating myself, they were a lot harder to play. Most days were playing this, going outside skating and trying the stuff in the game and repeating that every hour. We usually played a bit more grounded than what was even possible in the game because we tried recreate stuff we could do, or trying something new and replay in slomo so we could try to do it ourselves. It was so awesome getting to play against real life skaters that I looked up to and getting to see them around the city.
man, when you brought up "Can you spell GIRL" you sent shivers down my spine! That mission turned my hair gray. Skate 2 to me remains the best of the series, the perfect balance, (in my opinion) the best aesthetic, a good amount of progression that felt natural, and just endless possibilities to have fun. Great memories, good video.
This is one of the best reviews of the series I've seen. Only thing I can really say is that you can't really comment on adidas encouraging to buy their shoes being intrusive then pitch your sponsor. They both are there for the same reason. It's a partnership you respect, and they're both mutually beneficial. I feel content creators have a tendency to forget that game developers take on sponsors for the same reasons content creators do. Again this is a really really good review. I really loved all your points.
Been skating 5 years now broke my arm recently doing it, this video made me play the games again and they always give me the confidence to go out again, thank you
the Skate games inundated exactly what skateboarding is really like. as a skater of over 16 years, this game exemplified the true hardships of failing 99% of the time with nothing but pure perseverance to land that 1% just once. skating is more than just doing tricks, it's a life lesson to keep going thru every struggle because landing that goal even once is completely worth it. even moreso, the harder you had to try to get there, the more you had to go thru, the greater the feeling when you finally achieve your goal! it's euphoric. it's a personal victory worth celebrating. skate culture is teeming with such a support structure. whether you're doing the newest thing nobody has ever seen before or you're dropping into a ramp for the first time, the cheers will be all the same. I've seen skateparks packed with 50+ people gathered around to watch one dude do a gnarly handrail grind and I've seen the exact same just to watch someone drop into a ramp for their first experience and the place goes wild! we love to see improvement on any and every scale, we all had to start somewhere. it's that exact support structure that's kept skateboarding going so strongly as a community for over 50 years and it's why anybody is welcome to come step on a board and give it their best shot regardless of who they are or where they come from 💙
skate 3 has gotta be one of the best games ive ever played. so many memories made and so many bails off my board on hall of meat that i may never experience, but hey, the good thing is that i experienced it in the first place
Skate series was also my childhood, countless hours playing all of them, making new friends and socializing. With the new skate. i too hope they don't completely screw it up. Amazing video, something I've enjoyed in a long time on TH-cam. Bravo!
Great video. Wish you pointed out how fun it is to get off your board and hit people with either throwing the board or with the punch emote in Skate 3. I used to spend hours doing that then skating away when people got mad. It was kinda my GTA as I couldn't play GTA as a kid. Also attaching to cars to build speed was so much fun. Yeah Skate 3 will always be my favorite, it's just so goofy but also rewarding with its systems.
One thing not mentioned here is the addition of speed variation in skate. In tony hawk you go at one speed the whole game which is not realistic. In skate you can go slow or really fast and even become unstable when you hit a certain speed like skateboarding. It makes it more fun because you’ll need the right speed to clear certain spots or grind for longer etc…
Best video ever. I've been watching you for years. Never thought you would have such a passion for skating even as a spectator. You did this game justice and I'm impressed more so than usual
I'm only 5 minutes into the video, but another core memory of mine was trying to do a challenge for P-Rod on either 1 or 2. I believe I had to do a 360 flip to grind down a stair set. Took me ages, just like the Big Black 360 flip. Good times man
The ending talking about how your parents didn’t let you skate really resonated with me. I was never allowed to either and by the time I could I had too much other responsibilities and now I’m married with a kid and breaking an arm or leg would put them in jeopardy because I would miss work. Growing up fucking sucks
I didn't think I'd watch a 1 hour video from a guy I've basically never watched before but man, this was great. If any of your other videos are nearly as good as this, you definitely got a new sub lol
I still love that in the wii spin off skate it. You play in san van again but after the earthquake between skate 1 and 2 so they didn't have to use any npcs because it had all been evacuated
About Skate 2's performance, if you disable VSYNC through video settings, the game ends up feeling a lot smoother because it doesn't keep jumping between 60 and 30fps all the time. It still does not run as smooth as 3, and you end up with some screen tearing but its a big improvement in my opinion. Also you can switch between "dynamic" music and just the normal music player in the settings to alleviate the problem of the game being silent too often. Great retrospective video
Started this when the video came out, and finally finished it. And man, it is so crazy going back through and watching things for these games. I got a demo for the first THPS when I was 8 years old. It had one level and two songs, and I would play it with my brother for 2-3 hours. Just the one level. Played every skating game I could get my hands on since then. But none of them really hit me as hard since then till Skate. Now I'm addicted to Session. But I will always look back on these games as being some of my favorite games of all time. I actually play a decent amount of games using emulators on my phone, and these games are one of the main reasons I want a PS3 or 360 emulator. Being able to just play these on my phone would be fucking awesome. Like even when people talk about which is the best, I always find it hard to decide. I think they all excelled in different ways. You mentioned in the videos the different feelings in the map, and I absolutely love both styles. Yes, the 3rd game looks more built around skating, which makes it great and easy to find spots, but I also love the more realistic feeling of the first two. The 3rd has the hard-core mode, but the first still felt a bit more realistic in scope, but it was also a hit janky at moments. And finally, I feel exactly the same about Skate4. I have Session, but I would still love a new Skate game for some more causal fun. Especially if they bring back the create a park aspect... but yeah. It's EA. I don't care quite as much if it's just cosmetics stuff, as long as some things can be unlocked for free. I feel like in most games the paid stuff is a bit over the top for me anyways. But I do fear it's gonna go beyond that. It's gonna be things like parts to build your park. And not even just crazy cool things, but even some basic stuff. I doubt they would do tricks if we were talking about this when it was announced, even though I joked about it. But with the shit some games are doing now? I would not be surprised at all. I'm basically just in a "We will see how it turns out" mentality. I'm not gonna get myself excited only to be let down.
this video was amazing, it echoes feelings I couldn't have expressed for myself, but were ingrained in my very soul. I applaud you for this video! hats off to you
Skate is the greatest game of all time for me. So many memories as a teenager playing all 3 games after irl skating with my buddies, starter smoking weed and could just blaze one and play for hours. I still play skate 3 sometimes, all these years later. Special place in my heart for this game. Edit: skate makes me miss my old friends now tbh
37:02 actually, you can enable music playing all the time! it's a weird thing that it's automatically disabled, and you have to search the settings for it but it's there. sorta like how you can enable the high camera in skate 2, but the game never tells you about it. it's extremely hidden for no reason and my brother who had been playing the game for around 10 years didn't know about it till he bet me i was wrong.
Also for anyone that has only played skate 3 I HIGHLY encourage playing the first one. It really made me feel immersed in skating from gathering sponsors to setting up sample tapes to just creating lines, and performing coffins down lengthy steep hills. The story, and gameplay of the first skate still holds up in my opinion. I also encourage skate 2, but it can be difficult to acquire if you aren't emulating.
I have literally been making this video for my own channel for months and haven't perfected it so seeing it on your channel is both saddening but also makes me happy knowing that when I release it there will be an audience. I still play Skate 1 and 3 all the time and love them so much. 2 is great I just don't have it on my xbox right now lol
First experience with Skate was the demo. 30 mins in the first park, my buddy and I would take turns just starting it up again and again. We were broke ass teens so getting an actual copy took a while, but when we did we played it non-stop for ages. It was up against Call of Duty and Halo, and all we wanted to play was Skate. Also nice choice using Catherine - R30's Melancholy for the music during the Skate 3 you are dead creepypasta theory bit.
ill say it and say it again and again. no game will ever do what skate did. i still love it to this day. it was replayable on any level at any time. just being able to turn it on and throw down some sick lines was amazing. reminds me of the best times of my life so its always a good memory. ill always love this game
Man I love these videos! I really think it shows in the video wether you made the video for you or not. I really liked this video talking about a game series you essentially grew up with. PLEASE DO THAT MORE I understand that you have to make videos that have some level of mass appeal to grow the channel, but every once in a while, please remember there are fans like me who love the videos you love to make. Hope you're still keeping up with comments on this video. All the love, bye!
This absolutely was a passion project for me and I’m so happy you can see that from the video. I try to pepper in these passion projects as much as possible, but do note that every video I put out is made from passion. It’s just some topics don’t do well in the algorithm, so I can’t cover everything that I love all at once. Thanks for the kind words and for making my day, sending love back ♥️
I was mostly poor as a kid. I would get so hype when my cousins came over for sleepovers because they always had the latest hardware and games, so they were like my gateway to games I could only dream of. My sister and I grew up on THAW or American Wasteland. Local multiplayer on a ageing CRTV with Green Day blastin while we either played co-op or took turns in story mode. My cousins was the first time I was introduced to Skate---a realistic alternative to the awesome drug-trip and "F-You Physics" of the Tony Hawk games. Yet... somehow it had its own level of immersive fun. Every trick felt like an actual accomplishment. Love the Vids Man! Keep this swag flowing! :)
Original skate is one of the all time greats for me. I liked the extra tricks in the sequels, but the world and "feel" of the first one is the best imo. The hillbomb and powerslide physics were the best in the original game imo. The skate 3 powerslides are kind of busted and you can't cruise down hills as well because of that. Great vid!
Brillant video! i remember when i was young and played skate 3 and just- fucked around, so much fun, its nice seeing someone talking about not only 3 but the series as a whole-
Oh snap, finally Thrasher Skate & Destroy got a mention! I really love that game as a kid. It was indeed more realistic compared to THPS as it also has a health bar that if depleted, your run ends. And it also has the time limit when depleted, depending on the location, the police will chase you and the POV will switch to theirs. I also love the physics of the game. I'd always get my skater bump into a subway train just to see him get juggled everywhere. But yeah, said game is hard especially at the end game. You really have to do every trick in the book for bonus variety points to pass the level.
Black Box really was EA's golden goose. Sad that they're gone, since they created a bulk of my childhood for a long time. Also.... Side tangent. Is that the remix of Hydrant Game at 23:25?
47:39 WTF LMAOOOO how do you blunt slide that sign?!? 😂😂😂😂😂 I always had to cheese that challenge by standing on the sign and jumping into a blunt then popping out to manual and rolling over to the arrow above the grass gap 😂
I grew up playing games with my parents and have played them my whole life so while I have some nostalgia for games I feel like I'm missing out on the deeper feeling others like yourself have for games.
The FS Goofy Salad Grind going down a rail in skate (2007) is so satisfying!!! Oh and the art gallery behind the park is not original to skate (2007) (wish it was) just checked it out this morning in 2007 skate and it not but love you videos!!!
This made me so nostalgic. On the original Skate I was #1 in the world on death races… I wish like hell I had a picture or screenshot of it. Back when my GT was Jarrod77
I think for me what made this game special was it was just fun and satisfying to play, it’s crazy how simple it is, but how satisfying the gameplay loop actually was
Watching this video then you played mac miller fucking took me back holy shit. Back to when me amd my brother would just play music on our cd boom box and just play with a "switch controllers after 3 bails rules" and just chilling. Good times. This video also reminded my when the skate 3 community was actually alive and they had the in game community share feature and I miss just eating junk food and scrolling through other people's spots Edit: omg... Hearing skate. Will be a free to play game like almost entirely KILLED all excitement I've had, I still gonna get it the second it comes out and keep up with it, but the free to play moto really has me worried about this games future
As much as I love the skate series, and I'm excited for the new one, Session solidified itself with me as the best skate game ever made. It *_feels_* like skateboarding. Skate 3 will always be one of my most memorable games of all time. But part of the reason I loved it was because I skate and it was the most realistic skate sim at the time. After feeling how much control you have over the board in Session though, Idk if I can go back for very long lol. I kinda hope Skate 4 stays a little arcade-like though cause that's half the fun of it.
Great video, when I was young I had skate 1 for my xbox 360 but never got far into it but then I picked up skate 3 and absolutely adored it, I wish they had pc ports so I could keep playing them. I'm also scared about what EA might do to the reboot by making it free to play, someone I used to be friends with tried saying it was a good thing that it was going free to play because more people will be able to get into it which is could and all but that wouldn't make up for any microtransactions or battle passes that they might add. Even if the game is littered with them though it probably won't stop me from playing it 😂
This breakdown of my favorite childhood game is amazing thank you so much for talking about it. Now I'm just hoping the new skate will be just as good but that is a hard goal to hit because of nostalgia but one can still hope

hey aqua I wonder if you know about that secret spot at 38:48 literally 30 feet infront of you as there is something conveniently placed behind that car
honestly in the next Skate they better make that fact canon they better make it canon that you died
It was nice working with you on this! I love how it turned out.
I've been subbed to your channel for a while and have been watching you a lot lately. I was recommended this video because of your channel. Thanks!
We love you ChadRat
yo i watched all of your skate reviews years ago, its funny that you were in this video because i totally forgot about your videos on this series
Aye! Good to see you're still around! I haven't watched a video in a good minute, but I'm definitely gonna have to!
Love what you’re talking about with the filming aspect. I noticed skate 1 right away felt just like it did for me when I was skating with my friends. I was always the camera man 😅

You gonna blow him too bro
"ea skate series has nailed an identity in grounded realism" right afterward he shows us footage of a skeleton skateboarding

Today class we’ll be learning about sarcasm.
Body shaming smh

My favorit youtuber making a video on my favorit game series and it runs an hour

I love watching your long form essays
Fun Fact: Miracle Whip has always been the name of the trick before even Skate 3
The Skate series is so good that I’m not even a skater and I spent hours playing every Skate game growing up.

I'm waiting to see the thumbnail change a few times.
I've never been a fan of Skate but hearing your passion behind it I may give it a try. As always awesome video man
I love that you included the theory of you being in Skater Heaven in Skate 3
I had a dream of a skating game produced by rockstar games with their physics engine. It could be amazing
The closest thing you have is a skate in Bully
Thrasher Skate and Destroy for the PS1 is the closest we got with a Rockstar published skate game.
I still love that in the wii spin off skate it. You play in san van again but after the earthquake between skate 1 and 2 so they didn't have to use any npcs because it had all been evacuated

Thank you for making this video. Because of it I tried out skate 3 for the first time and I'm loving it. One of my top games of all time
this video was amazing, it echoes feelings I couldn't have expressed for myself, but were ingrained in my very soul. I applaud you for this video! hats off to you
Nice mac Miller instrumental when you started talking about skate 3 lol
Yeeessss a Skate retrospective 😍
WAKE UP BABE, NEW AQUA VIDEO
The ragdoll physics👌
13:25 "doesn't feel like it's built for skating"...."if you go over to the mega park"
The Mac miller instrumental @ the 15:32 mark really had me tearing up 🖤💜
Scrolled for this comment. Heard various mac instrumentals throughout
@@fuckgoogle3335 what song is the one from 42:00 one from?
I'll give you 8 shekels to do the Tony Hawk series as well
a game of skate it was my fav real life skating hobby. it pushed your limits of what you could pull of
Amazing run down of my favorite series. I haven't played it for years and seeing so much brought back a lot of good memories. Bravo!
Liked the video as soon as I heard the Best Day Ever instrumental
Bruh the mac instrumentals are a nice touch.
I was really enjoying this video until the wave of repressed trauma that I was hit with upon hearing the words "can you spell girl?"
Great vid!
iii love that so many of the instrumentals in this video are from Mac miller songs
I've been playing session for a week now. Once you get the feel for it. It's hands down the best skate game. Chef's kiss
Good days of trying to Hippie Flip and failing 💯 times just to get excited when i got it. Goodbye Horses is a repetitive banger 🔥🔥🔥
Brillant video! i remember when i was young and played skate 3 and just- fucked around, so much fun, its nice seeing someone talking about not only 3 but the series as a whole-
Restarted skate 3 for the 17th (literally) time while watching this. Great vid man
I love the skate games man..great video..👌🏻👍🏻
Yes :)
Skate 3 is one of my most played games ever, clocking in at just under 900 hours total since it came out.
50:40
The hall of mea is like literally one of the most famous aspects of the game
47:39 WTF LMAOOOO how do you blunt slide that sign?!? 😂😂😂😂😂
I always had to cheese that challenge by standing on the sign and jumping into a blunt then popping out to manual and rolling over to the arrow above the grass gap 😂
I don’t even know it took my soo long to kill that challenge
I grew up playing games with my parents and have played them my whole life so while I have some nostalgia for games I feel like I'm missing out on the deeper feeling others like yourself have for games.
I heard BDE instrumental by Mac Miller in the background lol how did you get that without a copyright
I only played skate 3 so curious to see what the older ones were like.
recommend going back and playing at lest skate 2 but one still has its charm and its simplicity is more of a benefit then a flaw
Skate 2 is an absolute masterpiece. Skate 1 hits different from a nostalgic state tho
Yes! That Rob Dyrdek mission was so hard!
TH-camr: Criticises in game advertising.
Also TH-camr: Immediately shills in video advertising.
I think for me what made this game special was it was just fun and satisfying to play, it’s crazy how simple it is, but how satisfying the gameplay loop actually was
Yo did not expect a RadRat cameo, that's awesome
This series means a lot to me as well. Algo did well today, exceptional video!
I fucking love this guy and his videos watching you talk about some of my literal childhood is TOO LEGIT
Appreciate the Mac background Music
“Can You Spell Girl”
*Sons of fortune fades in*
Loved skate 3 back in the day whenever I got done with school I would hop on and just shred!!!
Having rad rat in this idea was great! I love his channel
LET’S GO I’M WATCHING THIS STRAIGHT THROUGH MY WORK SHIFT
as one song from skate 3 says "everything is changing and everything is strange"
When I played skate 1 I found this glitch when I jump into a fence and I just flew out the map and I laughed the hardest I’ve ever had
Watching this video then you played mac miller fucking took me back holy shit. Back to when me amd my brother would just play music on our cd boom box and just play with a "switch controllers after 3 bails rules" and just chilling. Good times. This video also reminded my when the skate 3 community was actually alive and they had the in game community share feature and I miss just eating junk food and scrolling through other people's spots
Edit: omg... Hearing skate. Will be a free to play game like almost entirely KILLED all excitement I've had, I still gonna get it the second it comes out and keep up with it, but the free to play moto really has me worried about this games future
Ea skate is what got me into skating and I think the skate series is still the best skateboarding 2 with skate 2 being the best one
Not discussing what lies beyond the chain fences in Art Gallery is a crime! Glitching over them and exploring is fun! A bit depressing but nostalgic!
Skate 4 devs should watch this
Bonus points for the Japanese hiphop instrumentals
9:53 I do not remember Adidas advertising in Skate. Maybe it was there or wasn't in European copies
