I remember being a kid and trying to explain how difficult Lion King was to my step father. He scoffed at the notion until he finally tried to prove me wrong just to humiliate himself.
As a kid the farthest i could go was to the lava stage, and even if i got to the end, that damn puzzle was too difficult to figure out, and there's shit hitting you from every corner. I still remember the feeling of when i beat the game with a friend (well he defeated the final boss and many other stages but still).

I remember getting this for Christmas growing up. My parents rule was: I had to beat a game before I was allowed to get another one. I feel like...somehow they knew...
I think as a kid and teenager back then i was im my prime. I use to beat. All those very tough games. Now I'm not that good og a player.

I write this from prison still serving time for the crimes i committed due to the frustration of Super Ghouls n Ghosts. I can't wait to get out and play it again.
guess how i felt when i finally beat the nes version of ghosts and goblins......and then the game told me "just kidding, now play the real version....".....
Most of these games are really just unfair. So I downloaded super ghouls and ghost on the Wii U and constantly saved my progress so If I lost my armer or just died, I can pick up right where I left off.
And the final boss was easy. Getting through the game was the real challenge.
Falco Sirrus the game really isn’t that difficult once you get used to the controls and patterns. It’s just time consuming
@MultiTarded I see what you mean, but I don't exactly have time to sit through a snes game for several hours like I did when I was a kid, the save states were a bonus so I wouldn't have to start all over and helped by cheating the system since the difficulty can be excessive leading to rage quitting, thus me not ever finishing a game and getting my money's worth and finally seeing the ending. But yeah it can get old after a while.

I will never forget the time I beat 'Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,' for two reasons:
1) It was and still remains the hardest video game I have ever beaten, so it felt like a real accomplishment.
2) The ending amounts to a single still image and text telling you to purchase 'Super Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi,' which is almost (but not quite) as painful a kick in the balls as the spelling errors at the end of 'Ghosts and Goblins.'
That is hilarious. You beat one of the hardest SNES games ever, and you're hit with an advertisement. I doubt if I'll ever actually beat Empire Strikes Back, but at least now I'm prepared and should be able to contain my rage and refrain from drop-kicking the television.

I guess when you rented it on a 3 day weekend back in the day, you Just Beat it...i don't have memories of it being that difficult back then. Of course we didnt get trophies for pooping our pants back then

I owned this title. I was almost getting bored of the "Imperial March". I beat it sometimes at the easy level. I don't remember doing it on Brave and Jedi difficulties. But also don't remember playing it for 2 or 3 hours and beating. I just used the passwords in my favorite levels in the most times I played it.
Man, I had 100% completion on DKC3 back in the day, I never considered myself that good at games though.
What you don't know is that you actually miss 5% of completion...

@@user-xo6rm6ng9t There's a hidden difficulty that removes checkpoints and partner barrels that you can enter thru the file naming screen. If you get 100% on this mode it counts as 105%

I remember playing Super Contra with my best friend and figuring out a 99 lives exploit. When you get to the alien helicopter-type thing that launches grenades and throws guys at you, move each character to the extreme opposite ends of the screen and have them shoot towards the center. The grenades won't be able to hit you and you'll kill all the guys before they're able to land. Do this for long enough and you'll gain bonus lives through points. In typical 90s fashion, we would put weights on the SNES controller to keep the fire button pushed down and go do something else for a few hours. When we came back -- voila! 99 lives each!
You can do this with just one character as well
A game that never gets mentioned that is one of the hardest games I’ve played and owned is Jim Power: The Lost Dimension. Not only can the screen hurt your eyes due due to the 3D effect but you’re on a strict timer and limits hits while everything flys at you. I will admit, nothing is great about it other than some impressive mechanics for its time and Chris Hülsbeck (Turrican) did the soundtrack.
Hagane is the best game I've ever played that I couldn't beat the first level.

I honestly hate games like this. Looks badass but you'll never see the ending and if you do, that was the bad ending and need to beat it in a difficult level and I'm talking about games in all systems as well. Dark Souls is badass but I hate that I cant beat the first level sheesh

Kool. I remember being very good at Contra and Street fighter as a child and Tenn. I beat them games even hardest difficult stage. Now in year 2020 I can't. What happen?

Huh, for DKC3 I would've mentioned Rocket Run. That level is the hardest, even surpassing Lightning Lookout.
I would agree but I think that Rocket Run is one of those hidden levels.

such a poorly done game. Itchy and Scratchy is actually quite well done, as is the Bartman stage. The swimming level is well done too. The rest of it as well as the framing? At least it's better than Bart vs the space mutants.
it would be a better game if they let you warm up to each of the stages, didn't have the framing bs - ie, the typical 5-6 stages. Do a stage select screen and it would be a decent game.
I like the term "puzzle platformer", I never considered that before. Super G&G was all about memorizing patterns and locations and the ability to execute the needed moves. The longer you play the better you'll be. I remember being able to get pretty far in to the game without dying once. Even the stages that seem crazy aren't that bad once you understand what the hell is going on.
When I think of puzzle platformers I think of games like Donkey Kong '94 but Super G&G is in a way an action platformer in disguise.
Super ghouls and ghosts is definitely not a puzzle platformer.

When I was a kid, I had rented an SNES for the weekend with ActRaiser and absolutely loved it. Went hard at it and finished the whole game before I had to take it back. So when I finally got my own SNES for Christmas, the game I got with it was ActRaiser 2, just after it had come out (and before I had a chance to see reviews, thanks print publishing lag). Yeah, right off I knew it wasn't as good. But since it was all I had, I played it constantly until I had it nearly mastered and could get through most of the game without dying. Eventually ended up liking it. I kind of miss having those limitations, if I were in a situation where all I had was Sekiro I'm sure I could eventually master that too. But these days games practically fall from the sky with super deep discounts in digital sales and online subscription services.
Actraiser is one of my all time favorites. I hated how they changed the formula for the sequel. I was so hyped for it and my parents couldn't get it for right away. When I found out its not the same at recess, I NEVER played it. Still haven't.

I didn't actually think Earthworm Jim 2 was that hard, although I hate the pigs level.

Hello Clarice I used to always leave the balloon behind until I cleared out all the enemies.
ZAMN is hard because no passwords save inventory, so you can start on a level with a water gun and screw yourself

I always thought DKC 3 was a lot easier than 2. Granted the trilogy was my favorite games growing up so I think it's the most time spent gaming I have done.
yea the difficulty is 1 > 2 > 3
I borrowed the trilogy from a friend when we were kids. I tried like hell to get him to forget them or come off of them, but he wasn't having it. I had to give them back before I could beat them all. Now, as an adult, I've got all 3 on the SNES Classic and I've recently beat all 3. Thank goodness for save states! They are much harder than I remember lol, but tons of fun. 3 of the greatest games ever made. Peace!
For me 2 was easiest one, it has only 1 hard level - toxic tower as I hate snake mechanic. The rest of the game is easy for me,yes, even animal antics I passed parrot stage without problems after some attempts. and 3rd has lightning lookout, poison pipes, this damned stampede sprint(give me back Rambi!) and rocket level.
dkc 2 def hardest having to pay to save and use funkies flights blows
One of the things that made Donkey Kong Country 3 easier than the rest, was that you didn't have to pay to save and you could leave the world and go save at any time
DKC3 is a walk in the park after the psycho drama that is DKC2.
DKC2 is a better game though.

I love this channel I watch 3+ vids every morning so much variety and get good narration!!
Actraiser 2's pixel perfect graphics and music kept me hooked until I finally completed it. The best strategy is to inch your way slowly through the level and take out all the enemies. Plus I was so desperate for another Actraiser I didn't mind that Quintet omitted the sim portion. One of my favs.
and one has to use the shield. it works. when I first saw the sprite in a gaming magazine I thought it was just decorative but wow. it stops tiny shots by small stage 1 enemies as well as it blocks Tanzra's attacks. and one just has to master the magic system which I had big troubles when starting. But once you know what to use when and get it ready in time, your angel of death is unleashed.
Super Ghouls much harder than Hagane. I enjoyed Hagane’s high-ish learning curve which is so rewarding once you get the enemies and the controls down, making it very beatable.
Legend of Mystical Ninja deserves a spot here too (I found it harder than Hagane)
Hagane is not that hard.
After you memorize the game is even easier.

One game that goes under the radar is Super Smash TV. Extremely fun game and EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Over the top view shooter with rooms filled with countless enemies then the bosses themselves are just ridiculous

Did you know that it was literally impossible to collect all of the keys and achieve 100% completion? The devs confessed to it, said it’s because the secret hall of heroes at the end of the game doesn’t exist.
Yeah on the arcade they left it out, but added it later on. I’m sure your right with the snes version because I never got to the pleasure dome room even with the extra lives cheat.
I agree, I completed super empire strikes back, but could never complete smash tv, I could only finish it with the 8 lives cheat.

Let's see, the bosses were a giant human/tank hybrid that shot lasers out if his eyes, an angry, flying green face, a pair of massive snakes, and another tank/man hybrid. Good times.
Wow! I was really shocked to see Super R-Type on here. That was one of my favorite games as a kid and I've never had the fastest reflexes. But then, I never completely beat the game either. lol.

Super R-Type is only hard because the levels have no checkpoints and every mistake costs you tons of progress.
The strategy that worked pretty well for me during the Vader fight in Super ESB, is to use the saber block when he flings the junk at you. For whatever reason it bounces off like reflecting a blaster bolt, so you don't have to slice through them. If memory serves, anyway...haven't touched that one in a looong time after finally beating it.
How about a review of the most interesting, easiest,best introduction to the SNES, different and relaxing games such as Carmen Santiago or Wario puzzle games. Love the channel, keep keeping on.

For Lightning Lookout, just look for the early lightning spark above which happens moments before (and directly above) a strike. When moving to the water portions, go right after the last strike and get out ASAP, well within the time window of the next strike.
I honestly think DKC3 was the easiest of the three. DKC2 had a particularly hard level with vines and barrels whose name I don't recall, and getting full completion was much harder there also.

nah country 3 is way harder with the lost world levels. animal antics is about the only challenge in country 2

YES! Finally someone who gives Hagane its well deserved praise. Its a masterpiece of a game with all the different attacks and its fluidity which makes the difficulty just right as you perfectly said. Thank you, this made my evening, laying at home with a shredded shoulder on the weekend :)

Beat lion king as a kid, and it made me not like Scar even more. Very challenging, but keep plugging away, and it's doable.
Beat Lion King when I was 5. I don't think it is hard enough to deserve to be on this list.
ok in DKC 3 the lightning first flashes a small spark so it can warn you where the big strike will come just a moment later ,...

DK2 was a lot tougher
for regular ending agreed. for best possible ending to both. the bonus stages locations and games in DK3 are so tedious.. that it's harder to get 100% in dk3.
Mario Aliprandini nah the bonus levels in DK2 were way harder a 100% in DK2 is tough solely based on how challenging it was. Tedious games aren't hard nor challenging they are unfun. plus the thorn levels in DK2 were a lot more challenging than the parrot levels
I tried Super Empire Strikes Back last year, as I had managed to beat the first one some time before. Great music and graphics, and the Battle of Hoth level where you take down the Imperial walkers must've been mind blowing for the time (it was my favourite part for sure). However, I gave up when I couldn't get past Dagobah. The level design is brutal, and there are so many choices that seem to have been made specifically to spite you (shrapnel damage, enemies that respawn if you move slightly forward, everything around you causing damage, no recovery time after being hit, that fucking asteroid belt level). I just got destroyed.

I used to play Gradius 3 constantly. Eventually I beat the game on a single life. Which sounds impressive but for the reasons explained in this video it's really the only way you could beat the game.
Basically yeah. Although I sort of cheated since I used the Konami code to restore my powerups after dying. I didn't consider it THAT much of a cheat since you can only do it a limited number of times and you still go back to a checkpoint when you die.
Just in case you don't get told this enough: you are one of my favorite game "reviewers". I say "reviewers" becuase i mostly just watch your videos because you have interesting thoughts and show good gameplay footage that is fun to look at. Everytime I watch a video I enthusiasticly say the title of the show in unison. So, keep doing what you are doing good man :)
If I may suggest some games for you to play/review on Steam-Drunk:
Guacamelee because it is a very very good Metroidvania.
Recettear because it's such a unique concept most of the time.
LUFTRAUSERS because man, arcade fun!
Fortune Summoners, which looks childish but has an interesting fighting system.
Long Live the Queen which is an interesting take on Visual Novels and pretty quick to play.
And if you have any interest in 4X games like Civilization, for the love of Ark, try Endless Legend.
And... Early-Drunk? Factorio, because... Factorio is worth it.
I'm pretty sure your backlog is long, but maybe these spark some interest for you :)

I actually didn’t find lightning lookout to be that tough, more like annoying. The level I found tough was the lost level where, as the elephant, you’re constantly running. The reverse control level was possibly the second toughest.

The Jetsons. Every time George is hit, he does some stupid pose that you can't stop. Really makes jumping over pits difficult in some areas.
DKC3 does count. I never noticed the "flash before" when I was 11 and played it with my friends.

The mini skill in place of a shield works many wonders in Gradius 3, especially for the high speed level

I finally finished Super Empire Strikes Back start to finish tonight. It's just laughable how they placed enemies in that game. They would cover every possible angle and each direction firing in arcs, jumping around, and taking multiple hits to kill. Great game but man the difficulty is complete BS most of the time
there are some weird tricks/cheats in the game i figured out when i was 8 which made it possible to beat on easy. like the pause trick that regenerated your health.

Yeah SESB was a BEAST of a game. Hell I never made it off Hoth until I was about 15 years old and I got the game when I was 8. Oh and don't even get me started on the bullshit that is Dagobah.
HOTH is soo much more difficult with a shitty upscaler. lolz

Hagane is a god damn great game. it's hard as hell, but it's so satisfying and worth the effort to get good at.
My hardest game was Kings Quest I. Seriously. I played this with my 2 kids back in the 1980's. It was hard because it was my first video game. And there was no internet to get a walkthrough. It took us about 1 year to figure it out, and my kids learned how to spell words like LOOK, TAKE, SAY, etc. Thanks Roberta.
PS - We then went on to play other Sierra games like SQ. Thanks Ken.
However, I can't handle fast games like shoot-em-ups. Better left to young pups like you guys. :-)

Pretty much a list of my all-time favorite SNES games.
One of my first migraines as a child was playing Battletoads and that jet bike mission. Stress is not the word.
It's my only Super Nintendo cartridge that I have absolutely no idea where it is. And I'm happy that way.
I'm 34 years old and had the game since 2nd grade... as of today I have finally beaten the game. So much memorization and trial and error. Don't think this game can be learned with out the extra lives cheat at the beginning of the game

My mother and aunt's favorite game ever was Donkey Kong Country 3. They each cleared it many times over- they are in their 60s. Never have I thought that game was particularly challenging. Same for Earthworm Jim? Just seemed fine. The really difficult games of this era were the Super Star Wars games, Gradius, Govelius, etc.
The Salamander section in Earthworm Jim 2 is I think an olm, a blind type of salamander living in caves in the krast region of Slovenia & Croatia.

My most memorable conquering of a tough game was probly Super ghouls and ghosts. What seemed impossible at first slowly changed as I started memorizing and learning the game. Great graphics,gameplay and music kept me hooked the whole time
Ghosts and goblins is waaay harder
I beat Super Stars Wars, Empire Strikes Back (never played Return of the Jedi for no particular reason) and Contra on the hardest difficulty, but I never got past Super Ghouls & Ghosts' second level XD
I've beaten Super Ghouls N Ghosts and Super Return of the Jedi, but I can't get past the Asteroid Field level in Empire Strikes Back (playing both of those games on the Jedi difficulty btw)
If you want Gradius 3 to be easier, have all your options, and lasers/missiles, and fire nonstop. This causes tons of slowdown and makes it way easier.
Try the SA-1 hack that was recently done, removes all slowdown from the game (and can be burned to chip and put in a repro cart and played on an actual SNES, with still now slowdown). The game is so freaking fast without the slowdown, the challenge on that particular version is spicy. The game itself is unaltered, just hacked to play the way it was supposed to play.
As a huge fanboi of FromSoftware games, being reminded of these gems is very refreshing. Fantastic video 👍

Love Gradius III and it is so hard. Haven't played in forever, but if I remember correctly, I once recovered from dying on that super fast level (had to barely snag some additional speed power-ups at high speed after it started going) only to come out the back with super low fire-power. Maybe I only dreamed of this, but if it did in fact happen it was possibly once of my greatest video game achievements.
I don't know, I could beat Hagene. Super R-type I could not even making past the second level, maybe I just felt more motivated to play through Hagene than R-type. Great video.
Spider-man and the X-men in Arcade's Revenge would be good for this list. Ridiculously difficult. Another one of those games where you need impeccable timing and positioning on everything. And you basically have to memorize sections of the game to even have a chance at beating it, but due to limited lives, you'll die and have to restart from the very beginning as you are learning and memorizing them.
To this day I've still NEVER beat Empire strikes back.
But the toughest was the adventures of Dr Frankin...my goodness. Smh. Impossible!!
I have but some of those levels were stupidly hard. As who in their right mind would make the powerups invissible unless you touched them....Once you had a few powerups or forcepowers ( on those luke levels ) it was doable. if you missed those dear god that game went out of its way to kick your behind, thank fuck for level codes.

The Jungle Book is so hard when fighting Kaa and King Louie and even on King Louie’s kingdom collapsing level gets worse
I reached 100% completion on DKC3 but never managed to beat the lost world on DKC2.
DKC2 is definitely harder than DKC3.
You were probably older so that’s likely the reason
Dkc3 max is 103%, and dkc2 is 102%...With cheats dkc3 could achieve 105%

If they had just made Actraiser 2 a little easier, made the magic powerful/interesting like the 1st one and expanded on the SIM element it would've been amazing.
Yeah I agree I didn't finish Actraiser 2 unlike the first one it was much easier and also if you had alot of lives you can live that away.
I'm one of those who hated the SIM bits, I loved the action stages though. Thankfully it has a Professional Mode, where the SIm bits are dropped, and like Actraiser 2, the entire game is the action stages. Hagane is so damn awesome. One of those games that time forgot, it absolutely deserved a full-scale U.S. release. Shame it wasn't, reminds me of Alien Soldier, another one of the best 16-bit games of all time, where the U.S. was shafted of a release. Like WHY? Dammit, so stupid. Thanks to Sega on that one.
I purchased a reproduction of Hagane a few weeks ago and beat it about 4 times now. It is a rush, hard as hell but just as hard and as it is fun, excellent game.
Retro Soul I don’t think hagane really reaches alien soldier but yeah. I still don’t understand its inclusion I don’t consider myself very good at games I got to the last level on my fifth attempt

I just bought Donkey Kong Country 3 yesterday. All of the DK games are extremely hard to me. I’m just glad I got to complete the collection though.

I beat separation anxiety on PC. That game is literally just a war of attrition. Doable, but you gotta really want it.
Spiderman Maximum Carnage was no joke either.
Magneto on X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse was so cheap, so was Magus in Marvel's War Of The Gems.
Imo maximum carnage is much harder than the sequel

I beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES classic on normal mode and by spamming save states.
It was STILL ridiculously difficult and took several days/every ounce of my effort. I have no idea how anyone could beat it back in the day without save states or Game Genie. Much less on a harder difficulty. The final level with the bracelet in one go is virtually impossible thanks to the time limit.
I’ve been replaying Contra 3 “by any means necessary” and even with the ability to flash save/load trying to get the true ending is BRUTAL.

You know, I really didn't find Donkey Kong Country 3 all that hard. Yeah, OK, I was a better gamer back when I was a kid, more bloody-minded, more determined and with better reflexes, but I still 100%d the game (proper ending and all) and it never really struck me that "god-DAMN this game is bloody HARD!"

Seriously, that lightning level isn't that hard. The game warns the player when and where the lightning will strike.

lastly a small comment, I love this channel and I like the occasional list like this but I sincerely hope it stays occasional. WAY to many gaming channels put out too many damn lists and it is kind of tiresome.

Lightning Lookout in DKC3 isn't too bad once you figure out it's trick. It tries to predict your moves between the warning shot and the actual bolt. So if your moving topspeed during the warning, stop or turn around, and it will hit ahead of you. It's still tricky, but there's way tougher levels in that game.
Solid list, but I might have put Demon's Crest on it. It's one of the very few SNES games I never completed.

Demon's Crest is awesome, but too hard. I beat the true final boss, but only saving and loading every 10 seconds in the emulator. All the game Is unfairly difficult. Almost impossible.
Awesome game! I think it is not really that hard, but when it comes to the REAL final boss, it makes you want to pull your hair off.

F zero is my favorite racing game on snes. Beat it on the hardest difficulty. Always hate the last level in queen league. Can't remember what it's called

I think this is the first list video from anyone where I have played all of these games, at least a little. The only one I've beat was Contra III, and that took years! It was fulfilling, though.
The OG Demon Souls: Super Ghouls n' Goblins
So it's not just me. I like R-Type iii, I even own a physical copy (paid quite a bit, but not near what it goes for now) but I can only play it for an hour or so at a time because I usually get to a point where I keep dying and lose a bit of patience. A password feature would have helped but still in my top 4 SNES shooters.
It's one of the very few that doesn't suffer from brutal slow down and still looks very good.
Mike Richard Memorize the levels no slow motion is needed.
I'm a huge SHMUP fan and while I do appreciate the R-Type games the only one that I was actually able to get anywhere was the original on the Game Boy. Anyway, I greatly prefer vertical SHMUPs... currently the only one I've ever beaten was Tyrian 2000 (on easy) and it was still hard. It's got at at least 100 levels in it... currently playing PC-Engine SHUMPs and working programming my own for PC. Wait I did 'beat' another... Overkill for MS-DOS on easy, well all six levels, but that game loops forever. It's kind of like a vertical Gradius or R-Type in the sense that you can crash into the environment.

One of the hardest SNES I have ever played is Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues on hard mode. There’s a total of 18 or 19 levels, only 3 continues, no checkpoints, no password and almost every level is a maze with raptors jumping at you out of nowhere. It is doable, but you need to memorize the right path and the enemy patterns. At least, there is a cheat code for infinite continues, but if you’re in for a frustrating challenge, this one on hard mode is definitely a treat 😄.
Return of the Jedi was amazing, the flying into and out of the death star to this day is the most I have died on a level. I did get it though and I was like 10, great video game memory
Rotj ending sequence is terribly programmed. I legitimately beat the game many, many times (including Jedi diff) and honestly consider that part a literal coin flip that decides if you see the credits.

Rotj is a cakewalk minus the ending sequence which isnt hard but definitely badly designed/programmed. On jedi it isnt even harder just feels grinder with the longer boss lifebars.
Empire on easy is another dimension and possibly top10 hardest SNES when on jedi.

@@benjiroberts4434 The ending was the best part, flying in and out of the death star was the single greatest/hardest thing done in any of the Original Star Wars films. Really makes the whole trench flight a joke in comparison

SNES games in general has great visuals.
A note about Gradius 3. It said "no power ups can help you here". One of the first power ups you can get is speed up, which in fact does help with that stage. Plus, using the E. Laser, that game was easy.
Being in a lake during a thunder storm is super fun, the waves get really big!!
