- In today's video i'll make this finnish puukko knife. I'm pretty happy with it and I really like finnish puukkos and I'm definitely gonna be making more of them! Does the epoxy actually fill the errors in the hole made for the tang? Can't believe that you managed a perfect fit with tang and wood. Thank you, great video.

Yes, awesome tutorial.
Good clear process - I make my blades from spent farriers-rasps and follow a similar method. two minor things, putting a micro-bevel on a skandi-grind makes an easy to hone blade, trickier to sharpen. Also I find creating a 'fish tail' at the termination of the sheath gives a more traditional line.
Apart from that, lovely attention to polishing and presentation :-)

Couple days ago i found traditional Tommi puukko from a forest when we were picking lingonberries.
I just had to grind the rusts off the blade, clean the sheath and make a new handle.
It was my first time to use birchbark as a handle material and it feels a lot better in a hand than wood.
More soft and grippy.
I prefer traditional rat tail tangs on puukko style knifes which go through the handle and is locked to brass plate.
Looks better and is more durable.

what belt are you using to grind the bevels ?
I'm using a cheap 40 grit belt which is probably meant to use only with wood but it works fairly well with steel. and the brand is Mirka
Ok so it doesn't grind too much metal ? When should I use 80 ou 120 grit ?
I use 40 grit for shaping and when I have maybe a little under a millimeter thick edge I switch to 120 grit to finish it. and I heat treat with maybe about half a millimeter thick edge. After heat treating use 120 grit and grind it with about 30 degree angle, but this obviously depends on the use of the knife.

Awesome work! Question though, why did you epoxy over your drainage hole on the sheath?
Thanks! The drainhole was way too big because I didn't have enough leather but I should have left a small hole in the epoxy tho.

Thanks! Because I was and still pretty much am just a poor teen in a tiny home workshop and angle grinder is much cheaper. Nowadays I do have a bandsaw for wood though. Someday I will buy a bandsaw for metals also

For how long did you temper it in the oven?
I don't remember but nowadays i temper in 200c for 2 hours. and that's for 80crv2 steel.
what angle is your sharpening jig set at.
I guess you mean my grinding jig because I sharpened the blade without any jigs(for this kind of knife the sharpening angle is fairly steep). I just eyeballed the grinding angle so I don't know it either.

Puukoissahan kuuluis perinteisesti olla tasaviisteinen (flat grind) terä eikä tuplaviisteellä (Double edge grind). Joku mainitsikin kommenteissa jo tuon viisteen korkeuden ja luin vastauksesi ja pitää sanoa, että näitä sattuu, onneks et heittäny roskiin kuitenkaan, komia puukkohan tuosta tuli kuitenki.

I love both the knife and sheath. It's a great video. The only thing I'm consider to put on the guide on the knife. I think it will be more safe to handle the knife to protect my hand.
Scandinavian knives not for stabbing, but for drawing, so they don't need a guard.

hi good job i can see you had some problems with leather on the tip but good however 2 things (one is question) 1 you shouldnt sharpen knife before finishing it (keep your fingers safe 2 why heat threting 2 times? have you normalized blade ?
It was much easier to sharpen the knife before I made the handle because blade goes all the way next to the guard. (and i don't really care if i cut my finger a little bit) And I didn't heat treat it twice, I preheated the oil with a piece of scrap steel. Warm oil actually cools the blade quicker and makes it harder.
ok ok i though it is your knife not old file ;) it is very good i know that when you heat treat in oil it should be warm. you should care about your fingers becouse they let you make such nice knifes

Steven Littleton thanks! I used beeswax which also works pretty well. I cant remember but I probably didn't have any oil. Nowadays I always oil all my handles with danish oil.

But one thing: _veitsi_ is a more literal translation to knife, while _puukko_ comes from the german word _puuk_ which means tool.
As far as I know the word "puukko" possibly comes from old saxonian german word "pook" which means a dagger.
@@jussieronen3707 Hence the Germanic word POKE, to Jab or Stab. Though Finnish is not a Germanic language, like the Scandinavian, Dutch/Flemish, German, English, Frisian languages, it borrowed when the Finns settled just to the east of Scandinavian countries. Knife-making traditions have been shared to an extent between Scandinavia and Finland. And some loan words.

im just going to correct one thing, here in finland, veitsi is the word for a knife....puukko is puukko. In the videos title you got it right, puukko is a knife, but just any knife is not a puukko.

How long did it take to make in real time?
I didn't count the hours but I just finished a puukko and a sheath few days ago and it took about 26 hours

Wait does the knife have a Chisel Grind? If so it's not "technically" a puukko
No it has a v grind. I wanted to make a pretty high scandi grind but i messed it up so I had to make almost full flat grind. When the blade has this high grind some people say its not a puukko some say that it is.

Yes, I've been watching his great videos at least one and a half year. but what do you mean about the sheath? I made it by following a finnish tutorial article.

Do you mean heat treating? Heat treating basic carbon steels is very simple. heat it up to about 800 celsius (it's not very precise) hold it in that temperature for a few minutes and then quench in some oil if the steel is oil hardening steel. Then temper for about 200 celsius for 2 x 2 hours. You can find a lot of information about heat treating by googling it.

Yes all knives need to be heat treated unless it doesn't have to be sharp.
Owh what kind of steel u use?
The steel I used on this is called O1. Nowadays I use almost always 80CrV2. These steels for example are great for beginners because they are very easy to heat treat.
