Making A Puukko

- Hi! In this video I make a puukko knife and a sheath from a scratch. I am a quite novice at blade making.
The blade is 80CrV2 carbon steel. Before quenching I normalized the steel with three cycles at the gas forge. I used heated canola oil for the quench.
After quench I tempered the blade at 200 celsius for 2 hours. That heat treatment should give hardness of about 60 HRC.
The handle is made out of curly birch, birch bark, eben and bronze bolster. Wooden part of the sheath is curly birch and walnut.

Ordered my first Puukko knife few weeks ago and it took forever to get here in San Diego, I guess. UPS service coming from abroad was too slow.

In Finland, the puukko blade must be forged. It must also not have a finger guard or something similar. Otherwise, it's just a knife.

@@darkone9572 it's a Finnish knife. They serve specific purposes. Some are for camping and digging, some are for whittling, others are for cleaning a hunt, but they are not made for combat.
It's a craft of love and beauty. So a finger guard ruins the reasons for the puukko to exist. Additionally, the leather case is made to wrap around the blade and shaft, not for quick and fast access.
Kauhava, Finland, is home to a beautiful Puukko-smith. They have lessons, a workshop and multiple Puukko for sale, as well as some traditional garb from the town! A must see if you go there.
Any Finn's reading this, please correct anything I got wrong.
All of Finland took a vote. After watching what amounts to hours of work and some amazing craftsmanship with simple tools… Finland has declared, based on it’s representative- that this - is just a knife.

Nice knife and really well made for a beginner.
May I give you some tips.
To cut out the tang in the brass/bronze get a jewelers saw plus the saw blades and saw it out. It will be equally fast, more precise and less noisy.
I do the sharpening of my knives as the last step. Why the risk to handle a fully sharpened blade while making the handle plus the sheath. I do this since I cut myself while making one of my first knives.

you are brave to do all you did the way you did.. made for a dramatic video.. like.. really brave.. OSHA would have Feinted.. makers round the world were in suspense. as a fully sharped blade edges near sander with no tape to speak of.. it was a great watch.. the most heroic thing i saw was when the chisel slipped...tip on on that is too have the wood against some kind of solid stop. so you don't have to put as much force to hold the wood in place cause your body to push your hands together.. instead you can focus one hand on just applying downward pressure and the other on the chiseling with less force..

A beautiful knife sir, well done. One worrying time for me was when you notched the sheath, it should have been in a vice, your chisel could have slipped !

Thanks! If I understood right you mean zero grind to the blade? That is what I definitely want to learn and I need to practise how to make it. I am beginner at blade making so I decided to make the secondary bevel to this knife because it's easier to make.

Beautiful work sir! I love the sheath particularly. I am interested in one aspect of your construction of it. What made you choose to glue the inlay first and then route out the blade shape? I'm just curious. I myself would have not chosen to route out the blade shape. I would have either made a thickness blank and wrapped it then glued the inlays in making a snug fit for the blade,aka, "bedding" the blade. Please dont be offended, I'm just curious. The leather work is awesome! It turned out really amazing imo. The contrasting wood sets it off. I've seen that wood before and funny enough it reminds me of "oatmeal"...🤣😂 I never can remember its name, may I ask its name? New sub sir. 🤝
Thanks! The way I did it felt that it would worked for me and so it did :) I didn't even think to make it that way how you would have done it. The "oatmeal" wood is curly birch

Nice job overall, BUT working the handle shaping without taping up the sharpened edge is just crazy. On your next knives tape them up, or you may get the nickname: "Crazy Four Fingers"! 🙂

I started the same way you did, but once I got my forge going, I really fell in love! We can colab via email, IM, or whatever. If you're not too far I can even ship spare parts and tools.

@@kiehicraft постараюсь объяснить. На скандинавских ножах спуски сделаны в ноль. За это они и ценятся. Само изделие у тебя отличное 👍, но заточка не правильная.
@@user-dr3jq3bh2r Thanks, now I got it! Well as I mentioned I'm beginner at blade making and I'm learning how to create bevels and more. Making that second bevel is more easier than zero bevel, in my opinion.

That's not a puukko. that's a shiv.
Without forging there are no structures inside th blade.
also your "heat treat" is insufficent, you put it in orange yellow, not cherry red.
