So I used to think this, I just recently purchased a prebuilt on Mwave for $2,800 AUD inc shipping I requested an in-depth parts list before hand so I could cross check, if I were to purchase the parts individually and do it myself the absolute cheapest I could find was a total of $3,150 before shipping. I think we’re at a point where it’s probably safer to build yourself, but I wouldn’t rule out prebuilts all together, I saved over $400 and I would have had to get cheaper parts in some aspects to make it fit under my 3k budget, I got what I wanted and more. Remembering the whole build itself has a 3 year warranty and they build and test everything before it is sent, Ive built my own in the past so the experience isn’t being missed - I did some cable managing after and added some extensions to make it look cleaner, but I saved hundreds in the whole process so the it’s cheaper argument is no longer valid if you stumble across a build that has everything you planned on making

1: Cost. a little research and it can be much cheaper than the same spec pre-builds. not to mention, even tho pre-built systems might sound good on paper, they use low-end parts.
2: Customization. make it yours. looks is a huge part of building your own PC. Looks come second to performance imo.
3: Quality. This one goes hand in hand with 1 & 2. Get to pick the exact parts you want. Get the best of the best hardware. Build a custom over the top system like Jay.
4: Knowledge. Building you own PC will help you understand each component and even troubleshoot them later down the line.
5: Satisfaction. theres nothing better than building your own PC part by part and finally see that post screen.
1: Time. It can get time consuming trying to find the perfect part for your build, even a hassle. researching fitment of radiators or ram height clearance can be a headache.. but worth it.
2: Use. if you just watch netflix and browse the web just get a chromebook..

thanks for your videos, Im building my first pc at 52
after a stroke where I woke up one morning and couldnt
remember how to use Blender and Zbrush anymore and was told
Learning new things could be hard for me. So Im very excited
to be able to do this. I think the main reason Is understanding
how it works, I think a lot of people blame issues on software
or update bugs when realty is their pc only meets the lowest
requirements to run what your trying to use it for.
So built yourself or not, having a better understanding how it works together as a whole,
will save people a lot of wasted time time and money in the long run. I know People trying
to run games on 2 gb of ram, and the game says it needs 4, but recommends 8.
then they complains the game is crap.

Top 5 reasons to build your own PC:
1: PC building has never been easier for end users. Mostly everything is plug and play, with a wide variety of options to customise your build experience. You have full control of what goes into your machine, including software and bloatware from certain prefab units.
2: Shopping for parts means that with ample research, you can build a good mid-range PC for relatively cheap if you catch them on a sale. Worrying about sockets and chipsets quickly being made obsolete is a thing of the past as well; both AMD and Intel are staying pretty friendly with the LGA 1151 and AM4 chipsets.
3: Unrepentant RGB lighting. Go stupid with the stuff and bling your chassis out.
4: PC gaming has hit mainstream like never before. Even Microsoft shied away from it until they saw how it could be made alluring for AAA developers to drop console ports on the system. Now they're creating a unified platform for Xbox and PC. PC games are good and varied now. The 2 biggest games on the planet - Fortnite and Minecraft - are dominated by PC gaming.
5: The satisfaction of seeing the rig that you built post to BIOS for the first time. Beautiful. That fresh install of Windows. Glorious.
2 reasons to not build your own PC:
1: Troubleshooting and diagnosing problems can be a pain in the ass. You're lucky if it's a loose coupling from your PSU. If it's a bent pin, your're better off RMAing it and seeing it again in 2 weeks.
2: Support and warranty. If you have defective products, you have to chase up to 7 warranties from the various manufacturers. If you buy a pre-built, you only have to deal with the place that you bought it from.

The way Jay phrased it though, let me jsut tell you this story. I had a Dell PC that I bought off a friend, and when I had a major problem with it I spent more time trying to convince them that I owned the computer than we spent solving the problem. And their heavy Indian accents and lack of English did not help. Their conclusion? They tried to upsell me a new hard drive. I torrented windows 7 from a friend's computer later that day and reinstalled with it, problem solved.

    Pro:
    1. I can choose the parts and know the limitations of the parts.
    2. I freaking love doing it.
    3. Easier to upgrade than SI
    4. Previous parts have gone to friends and family to improve/start their rigs.
    5. It's easier than ever, gone are they days of having to search through thousands of skus for RAM to ensure its compatible with your CPU choice.
    Cons:
    1. It's an addiction, my current rig has cost thousands of £'s and I constantly want to upgrade without the need too.
    2. It can be daunting, I have friends who I have helped build rigs and they are still scared of just cleaning fans and filters.

thanks for your videos, Im building my first pc at 52
after a stroke where I woke up one morning and couldnt
remember how to use Blender and Zbrush anymore and was told
Learning new things could be hard for me. So Im very excited
to be able to do this. I think the main reason Is understanding
how it works, I think a lot of people blame issues on software
or update bugs when realty is their pc only meets the lowest
requirements to run what your trying to use it for.
So built yourself or not, having a better understanding how it works together as a whole,
will save people a lot of wasted time time and money in the long run. I know People trying
to run games on 2 gb of ram, and the game says it needs 4, but recommends 8.
then they complains the game is crap.

    3: Very fun
    4: Great learning experience

    Should Not
1: You have no knowledge of the individual parts. You need to make sure you do research and understand what each part is and what it does

    • @WarAuthority

5 - Console games are about as cheap as their counterparts unless you're buying from shady sites like g2a.
1- Everything fits together within their own slots it's a no brainer even the verge was capable of fitting things together. The only research that might be required is fitting the heatsink/aio on the cpu, and whatever fan setup/cable management around the case.
      2. Build an awesome home machine, and just remote desktop to your home machine for unlimited power on your smart phone.. or other device. Who needs a laptop that will just be in the trash bin in a year?

I built my first rig about two years ago and love the whole experience. Doing the research on parts, watching vids on how to put it together, watching the prices on parts so I would get a good price and the anticipation of putting a sweet rig together. It was like Christmas morning for three months. I also think there is a huge feeling of accomplishment that goes a long with it. After i put everything together i started noticing random crashes and it would not reboot all the time. I lived with it for a while then took it in to have it looked at. Nothing was found, and I was told it was in perfect condition. After a little more time with the same issue I decided to take a look at it. I realized I had hooked the fans up wrong and with a few tweaks got it running perfectly. That feeling of accomplishment was amazing.

I've been watching Jay, Linus, Kyle, Paul and Steve for like 6 months now, never built a PC before but yesterday I ordered parts and I plan to build it myself. Honestly, I am confident as all hell, because 6 months worth of videos, every day, hundreds upon hundreds of videos watched, I feel like I've built systems before. When a tech youtuber puts out a new build and they do a parts overview at the beginning of the video, I already know the exact order in which they should be installed. If you come to that point, you are ready to do it yourself. I don't know if you guys agree with me, but I've come to the point where the only thing I worry about is parts being DOE so I have to wait for the replacement process or how many times should I touch the grounded PSU so I don't shock my parts (where I live, I can't find an ESD strap to save my life, I've been looking and looking and I pretty much gave up). If a moron like me can be this confident after hundreds of videos watched, everybody can. Don't be scared, guys.

Reason For 1: Games, Games, Games. Large selection and the abilty to tune how your game looks (More a pro for pc in general)
2: Diversity, you get to show your personality in your build even if your budget is limited
3: Price, building is also going to be cheaper then prebulit in comparison.
4: Developing a new skill, and you'll continue to grow your knowledge and maybe even be able to share your skills and knowledge with others.
5: Building a PC is Fun and at the end you feel accomplished. Playing basically any game with your friends regardless of budget due to cheaper games and the abilty to adjust settings.
Reason you shouldn't 1: You're complacent, in the pc world unless you're willing to spends thousands every year, you're not going to have the "best of the best" all the time, being happy with what you have makes building a PC more enjoyable.
2: Its confusing, if you just care about hopping on some games and playing, a prebuilt may be more logical. its not for everyone to put it simply.

I learned about PC’s when my brother in law dumped 10 dead one on me when his work moved. I worked out what did what and out of just using them I got 4 working PC’s. I learnt the hard way that companies will often do the minimal to get the specs they advise so I would struggle to believe a lot of PC build companies these days. Even now I laughed at a PC World employee when he was trying to sell a “gaming pc” to my friend stating that it would last and was high spec when the board was an a320.
    My 5 reasons
1 It is fun to learn, plan and build your PC
2 You can personalise your pc to you and what you are going to use it for.
3 Knowing what is in your PC can help against nasty surprises.
4 You can contribute to a pc community that is amazing full of amazingly talented people.
5 It never stops. I like to learn and the pace of PC change means you will always keep that grey matter churning over.
    Not to buy
1 If you find yourself to be a complete techno phob but want to get started then see who the community trust.
2 If you do not know anyone and have more general pc needs then that would be fine to.
Playing with PC can even lead to a new job if you are interested enough. It did for me. I still confuse my computer science degree colleagues with how fast and easy I make PC/laptop diagnoses and repair look. I’m a car mechanic by trade before anyone asks what I used to do.

    • @CanadaBud23
      @CanadaBud23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Pretty much the same with me. Mine started with my dad getting parts and garbage from companies and PC repair shops doing his scrap business. I was only 13-14 at the time so around 95-96 at the time. I had boxes and boxes, hundreds of damaged parts, stripped cases boards etc. I had no prior experience or knowledge, I didn't even have access to internet or anything at that time. It was very limited simply because school didn't want me near them. Wasn't doing too well in school during those years, it was a punishment really. Weren't allowed to "play" with the computers if your grades sucked. But anyway my dad brought these home and said "If you want to learn, there they are!" lol he didn't know anything either. I spent months learning on my own how to put them together and make them work. High school made it easier, once again no real class for them per say but I did have a computer graphics course and the PCs didn't have locks on these so I used that to take a peek at the hardware. Teacher caught me the one day and I told him my story so he let me just look, which was good enough. Eventually I was able to put PCs together and make them work reliably and I sold them. So I had a little business going building and repairing PCs for a few years. It was nice. It was even funnier when I told old school mates I had a "PC and Repair business" cause they never thought i was smart enough to do any of that stuff but they came around and asked if I could fix their computers, which I did.
But I'm like you, it was more of a hobby for me and first and for most is cars. I can pretty much scratch build/modify anything, crawler, drag car, etc. But I had the interest at that time and when you have an interest it's much easier to learn and fun. I have lots of reasons to learn to do it. The only valid reason I can think of not to do it is because there is no interest there and the person is not willing to learn. Which can be fine too, not everyone likes to do everything now hehe. But that's a major factor in it rather than cost of labour or money.

Reasons why to build your own:
    1. It's super fun, I've only built one and I've wanted to build another one just to do it ever since
    2. It's cheaper (generally)
    3. The parts are mostly higher quality than what is found in pre-builts
    4. So you can be the guy that helps your friends put together their lists and be the smart PC guy
    5. So you get good at replacing and fixing parts if something ever fails (and, similarly, all the parts are pretty easily swappable compared to pre-builts)
    Reasons NOT to:
    1. Warranties from all the separate companies is a nightmare. This can be a variable, since each company has different customer service. For example, when my PSU broke from my pc falling over (NOT my fault) EVGA sent a new unit right away. Meanwhile, when my motherboard had a broken pin out of the box, and the return deadline had passed, MSI wouldn't replace my unit and I had to buy a new one.
    2. There is a much higher risk of breaking components when they aren't already installed.

Even when i was on console i enjoyed more niche franchises, and entering the PC world perfected that for me (ofc i still got a ps4 for those exclusives). But even these days i am more interested in the actual building and optimization of PC. I'm not a ''Throw more money at it" kind of person. I want a build, especially if on a budget, to perform better than others in its price bracket wether it be spending more money on the GPU by saving a few dollars on the SSD, overclocking, or just simply seeing how lucky your silicon is. Hey guys, I'm not a veteran builder - in fact I'm planning my first build right now - but I figured I could add some newbie perspective on why I'm changing over from pre-made to home-made computers.
Now for story time because it's 3 am here and I've missed typing with my 20 year old, split-style ergonomic keyboard. (What do you mean I could have bought this usb adapter years ago??)
The main reason I'm changing over? I'm a stubborn, stick-in-the-mud who refuses to get rid of a computer I've fallen in love with.
By that I mean I still have my first hand-me-down desktop that came out the same year I was born (I still turn it on just to hear that lovely whirring as it starts and the satisfying crackle as the screen powers up and to play 'Moorhuhn 2'). And I still have the cruddy little desktop that my dad's university research lab was throwing away because even *they* had finally received updated hardware. And I daily use the little pre-netbook, 3 pound gateway I got 9 years ago, because even though it's slow it's been with me to Germany and back, through my first few years of undergrad (had to give it a break until I finally had a tecky friend talk me through replacing the melted hard-drive), and is candy apple red. And I'm am typing this comment on $250 referb laptop that's the size of a copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica that I've had limping along for the past 5 years.
Now put that next to what I do with those computers, like my thicccccc sleeper refab hooked up to my huge, top-of-the-line, cost-as-much-as-9-credit-hours-of-classes wabcom tablet screen, trying to stream while I draw mural sized art-pieces in the most updated Clip Studio Paint EX. It takes 15 minuets to get everything booted up and I can only run a few things at a time or it will take several minuets for a pen stroke to show up on the screen.
What you'll be that patient with really shows what you truly love, but I digress.
And yes, I could just get another store-bought something or other and in have it join the pile of loved, but useless computers that I only turn on for one or two programs just so I have an excuse to turn it on and justify it taking up space on my desk who's legs are buckling under the weight of nostalgia . . . or I can invest in a build that has the capacity to grow as I need it to, that I can add and replace, piece by piece, and not have to choose between suffering through the white noise of a fan on my desk to cool my laptop, while I slowly watch the battery pack swell with age, praying that it will last another few months until *this time* I'll actually bite the bullet and buy a new computer . . . or a replacement battery, and - nope, a replacement battery cost more than the laptop itself - guess I'll just pretend it's fine; because it's fine - it's fine - *really*, it's fine . . .
TLDR; Hate how everything you love dies? Replace it's guts a piece at a time so you can test the philosophical thought experiment of the ship of Theseus! If it works; nostalgia problem solved! If not; it still plays the fancy games and stuff!
It's probably time I head to bed . . . after I watch one more build video.
    Have a nice night, y'all.

I'm starting to build my own pc for the first time and here is my 2 cents:
Pro: you can buy your computer a piece at a time rather than all at once, meaning it's easier for someone on a budget to build a pc rather than just buy one.
Cons: I have no idea what I'm doing.

Reasons for building my first pc:
    1. To witness what's it like to get the most performance out of gaming
    2. I love gaming
    3. I chose an IT degree (randomly) and building a computer should look good to an employer, especially since I have no IT related experience
    4. Building a system gives you the feeling of accomplishment, and it's your new "baby" customly designed and operating torwards *you* alone.
    5. Halo MCC is on steam

  • @krack-a-lacker
    @krack-a-lacker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    pros
    1. unlike consoles, even if you built a system "similar" to consoles, your 30fps pc will be somewhat more stable than consoles which fluctuates way too often.
    2. customization of your own pc (components and peripherals) and anything in-game. i'm saying you could mod a lot of games.
    3. convenience and better multi-tasking. everything you may need - music, video, editing, gaming, it's all in one machine.
    4. increased knowledge on computers. it's really interesting and could be fun once you learn what certain components do, even if it's just the very basics.
    5. a sense of accomplishment. i can't tell you how i was so nervous powering up my pc, seeing the lights and fans
actually work then starting up the pc and actually seeing the bios on your screen. a once-in-a-lifetime feeling.
    cons
    1. lack of research and confidence could lead to frustration and impatience. first time builders, if you're building it alone, expect to spend at least 10 hours per day until you complete it.
you will go back and forth and wonder if what you did was wrong or right. extensive research is recommended before you actually buy anything.
    2. wanting to upgrade your components once you realize your "cheap" pc is not cutting it for you. this happened to me when i realized a 1060 is not enough for me because of today's games.
although recommended specs aren't so overwhelming, there is that feeling where you want to maximize your gaming experience and play on ultra.

Spend 10 hours per day building your first? I'm a newbie and once I had all my parts, I built, cable managed, and powered it up in a few hours one evening. After all the videos and research I did, it wasn't hard at all. The scariest part was pushing the power button for the first time. It scared the hell out of me! LOL

I have one slight change to make to mine: it requires a slim profile case fan (120mm x 15mm) and when I was ordering parts, no reputable web seller nor any local place had the Noctua fan I really wanted. So it has some no name fan. Works well enough but, the fan I wanted has now been ordered and will be delivered tomorrow. So I get to sort that out soon. Then it will really be finished. And, hopefully no need for upgrades for several years. *Almost* sad about that.
