How's the depth of stage, is it flat like many DS dacs, or closer to a 3d presentation as some good R2R dacs seem to display? Also, how about separation? I think that adds to overall performance and not just having a wall of sound thrown at you.
I watched this video on Sunday at 7:30am and after listening to Randy’s opinion and glowing review of this DAC, I emailed Geshelli Labs 20 mins later concerning wood options for the case, as appearance is just as important TO ME as sound quality and I prefer that all of my gear matches aesthetically. I was expecting a reply this week but to my complete surprise and utter amazement, my phone rang at 11:15a the same day… on a SUNDAY and it was Sherri from Geshelli labs! We had wonderful and very informative conversation about not only wood options which aren’t available on their site but about the history of the company as well. Geshelli Labs has earned a customer for life in me. Thanks Randy and Sherri! I’ve finally found my DAC.
So I got my Geshelli J2 AKM Dac today. I don’t have a lot of experience with DACs, Ifi Zen and SMSL SU-8s are probably the best I have had. The difference is amazing. I used the J2 with the Xduoo MT-604 and Hifiman Anandas(non stealth) An amazing experience. I realized I might not have used your link but I did message them and tell them you were the reason I bought the J2. I sent this “thanks” hoping you will have a nice cup of coffee and smile because you know your efforts are appreciated. So Thanks! PS I think you will get this. I have a couple of frustrating days in a row. Once I got the Dac hooked up and started listening, I started to feel joy again. Music is amazing. Also, I wanted to recommend an artist to you, that I have fallen in love with. Her name is Tash Sultana. Not sure if her sound is to your liking but I figure you might appreciate her.
Hi... just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you. Bought the WIIMPro, Elac Debut 5.2s, and a Geshelli J2 (just arrived). I use an old Sony A/V receiver. Friends can't believe how good this system sounds, myself included. I also bought a $25 used Samsung Blu-ray player for all my CDs. I made a donation to your channel on one of the food drive days..thank you again:)
You need more subscribers because the content you bring is not only well produced, but is applicable to a large audience of "common" audiophiles who will never buy a $100000 audio system. I have some of the equipment you've reviewed and agree with many of your reviews, and you have opened my eyes to options I've never heard of. Thanks!
This AKM Dac with the Geshelli Archel 2.5x made a world of difference for the HIFIMAN XS over my motherboards onboard audio. The instant I started listening I couldn't help but smile, it was something I never experienced before.
Great review Randy! It’s been a pleasure to get to know Gino on the Patreon zoom calls. I was so impressed with the other patrons comments about this DAC, that I ordered one on Saturday. I’m glad I’m going to beat the rush for those who are watching this video today. Great job Geshelli Labs! Gino, I’ll take my burrito with black beans, light rice, and lots of cheese.
I ordered one before the video too so glad get in before the rush Sherri bringing in a case that actually looks like the blue render not Mist Blue thier service is outstanding!
I love what my J2 has done to improve my WiiM Mini and Cambridge Audio DVD89! I love the wood cases but opted not to spend the extra for it and requested a silver case and smoked glass so it still compliments my vintage gear. Thanks for the WiiM and J2 recommendations!
This has to be one of the best values in audio. Mine arrived about 10 days ago and the resolution, soundstage and top-to-bottom balance are outstanding. I really like the idea of supporting US companies, and when I saw a few interviews with the Geshelli's I loved their story and took a flyer on this DAC. I figured that if this wasn't as good as I'd hoped I'd just use it for my desktop audio system. I'll simply say that it exceeded all my expectations and then some, and its balanced outputs are now feeding my Audio Research line stage and power amp, which is driving my Maggies. My system has never sounded so good. Hard to believe that a $300 product could have this impact (I added the USB input option). Highly recommended.
@@andrehb I use Roon for library management, content navigation, and Qobuz integration. Roon Core runs on an iMac with Roon Bridge on a headless (no monitor, keyboard or mouse) Mac Mini in my equipment rack. DAC is connected by a short USB cable and MacOS recognizes it as a CoreAudio device. From Roon Settings -> Audio it will appear by default as "Combo384 Amareno". Just have to enable it and optionally rename it. Obviously, a direct USB connection from a Mac or Windows machine will be simpler but the key is that with MacOS and later versions of Windows it's simply "seen" as a USB audio device.
@@jeffreyspotts5377 Hey thanks much for the detailed reply - sounds you've invested a fair amount of time + $$ into your set-up, so if you're going with this DAC it's quite an endorsement - thanks again, cheers
Just got my J2 AKM this week. Seriously the nicest audio product I have purchased. I had second thoughts after I first purchased as I got it with the aluminum chassis and called them and upgraded it to the cedar wood variety and is soooo beautiful. This company might be the best in the business in terms of balancing incredible quality with affordability.
I agree! This J2 AKM DAC is phenomenal - in particular if you use a LPS. It has the best tonal balance I have heard, with great bass dynamics and articulation and detail - as Randy mentions. The LPS takes it to another level - the soundstage deepens, with the best layering and instrument separation I have heard. The detail of music all the way down into the mix - the subtleties and background harmonies of the music just comes through. I *had* a Denafrips Ares II in my main system. Not any more ... Geshelli J2 AKM is my reference DAC.
Geshelli, Bellari, Schitt and Outlaw. I hope and pray that we someday dominate this market. The US loves music and these quality American audio components prove it.
I dunno about schiit anymore…. I used to love my hel 2e, but as of recent it’s been failing me. Windows won’t recognize, not properly grounded, distortion, poor SPDIF quality with use…. I shouldn’t be having to fix a supposedly excellent dac. Oh well….
I come back to edit this reply: my schiit hel 2e now works like new after acquiring a DC only usb power cable. Windows pulls it everytime, and it even sounds better. Why schiit doesn’t tell people about this issue blows me away!!
Finally! A new Sith Audio product! I need that vacuum chamber. And some burritos. And the DAC looks cool. Especially with all the amazing case options. Balanced outs! Don’t have anything with balanced ins, but hey it could very well happen. Controls sound confusing, but I’m a usually a set it and forget it kind of guy, if I can set it right.
You are very welcome.. You put in a lot of effort to bring everyone some enjoyable and informative content. I watch all your videos and it always puts a smile on my face. (I get the subtle one liners)😂 On an actual audio related note though.. I love rock and metal (KISS, Metallica, AC/DC, Def Leppard)and want the best gear to listen to it on… Would this Geshelli dac be worth adding to my system, which is Nad C700 Buchardt S400 MII PANASONIC Blu Ray (for cd’s’ I don’t consider myself an audiophile.. Hence the coffee and question. 😂 Hope this is a fair trade.. keep rawkin’ amigo. 🤘🏴⭐️🤘
I just ordered AK4493 chip in aluminum….charcoal with smoke. I called geshelli prior to ask a question and mentioned I watched your review. Thanks much!!
Thanks! Was wondering if you still have the Xduoo MT-604 and the Drop Hifiman Edition XS? Love to hear your experience of using this DAC with those. I have the Hifiman Ananda and am waiting for the MT-604 to arrive. Will most likely add the J2 AKM in the next couple of months. Thank you again for the great content, amusing jokes and awesome puns.
This goes towards my theory that it isn't just the DAC chip that makes a good piece of kit, that a good engineer can make a middling DAC sound good with careful design of the rest of the device or make an excellent DAC chip sound worse than it should. Power delivery, component selection, circuit design and PCB layout are all just as critical as the chip of the week. Turbocharging a Yugo, well, it's still a Yugo.
I think implementation plays a bigger part then people realize. I don't know much about circuit design and electronic components but I do know if you don't plan out the traces and locations correctly you can cause all sorts of problems.
It's ALL implementation for PCM decoding. The actual encoding/decoding is a trivial piece of computing these days (for example- this AKM j2 is rated at 384kbps. A $500 video card can pump 448 'G'bps and it's far more unforgiving in terms of detectable errors-overly simplified but you get it). As mentioned - op amps, compression algorithms and software, power supplies, those all are a bigger deal than the chip.
I love your passion for the products you review, the price’s are within reach of the common man and you give no bull sh*t opinions. Brilliant channel. I am still using the equipment that I put together more than 30 years ago and not been tempted yet to splash out on new stuff because I simply love the sound quality that I already have apart from stuff being replaced when broken or worn out. I have added however a Bludento BLT-2 to play music from my iPhone through my hifi. I can’t believe how good the sound is for less than £60 direct from the company. I think it has some kind of Texas maybe Saber DAC and looks very well made, loads of connections including optical and all the interconnections are included. I would urge you to test one. Thank you again.
I have the BLT-HD by Bludento and it really is an amazing component. The DAC in there really does a beautiful job and I'd argue that it sounds very close to a decent WIFI streamer. And agree 100% that it is a solid, well built piece of equipment, for very little money. I will say that when I upgraded the RCA cables it sounded even better.
@@ramondelgado6778 totally agree with your comments including fitting better RCA cables. The HD and 2 are identical I believe sound quality wise but the 2 is Bluetooth 5.1 as opposed to 5.0 on the HD. I can’t compare with a music streamer as I have never listened to one but use Apple Music and Spotify both lossless from my iPhone 11 and I am very impressed with the music. I do have very good vinyl turntables and CD players that were expensive and yes they are better but I can assure you not by much. Slightly better detail and soundstage but for everyday listening with the massive convenience of having a vast music collection on my iphone and icloud what is not to like. In fact I can listen all day without fatigue jumping from one album to another in seconds.
@@tonyjedioftheforest1364 I'm a music streamer, primarily, and having said that, I moved up the line of streaming from Bluetooth with the HD2 to the Bluesound Node 2i ($550). The sound quality is better, but it is NOT night and day better. More open, a bit warmer, more detailed, but again, not night and day. If you critically listen to music, and have a revealing system, you will be able to pick them apart. Casual listening or just listening to music while doing things, even less of a difference. I recently purchased the WiiM Mini streamer for $89, out of curiosity, due to the great reviews. Using the optical output on both, using the internal DAC of my old Sony ES STR-DA555ES, Emotiva TA-100, and Marantz PM7000N, they sound virtually identical. It makes me regret the purchase of the Node 2i. Looking back, I would rather have gone with the WiiM Mini streamer and a Gishelli Labs J2 DAC for $330 total and would like have a higher level streaming experience. The J2 with the new AKM DAC will be my next purchase. Gotta sell some stuff first so my wife doesn't murder me. Haha!
@@ramondelgado6778 sounds like the difference that I perceive with my turntable/CD system and the BLT-2. Not much in it and certainly not several thousand £/$ difference. I have read great reviews of the iFi Zen Blue which is British made and that is still only £150. In fact Paul Rigby the Audiophile Man recommended it. That will probably be my next purchase as I have 3 systems set up in my house so I do need more Bluetooth streamers and if it’s better still then it would be a win win situation. To be honest this has all been an eye opener for me with the quality available for very little money these days compared to the 1980’s/ 90’s.
@@tonyjedioftheforest1364 Tony, you got me thinking that I should pull out my boxed up BluDento HD2 and do some A/B sound comparison's to the Node 2i / WiiM Mini WIFI streamers and see that now having adjusted to WIFI streaming, how well does the BluDento HD2 hold up? From my recollection, the HD2 (about three years ago when I first purchased it) was soo good to my ears, that I sold both of my CD players and small CD collection because I did not have the space and didn't think they sounded any better. That says alot about that little unit (+ $80 Maze Audio Reference RCA interconnects) which really does something special. Previously I was using a 1/2 meter mono price RCA cable that I believed was a weak link. I purchased the Maze Audio cable to connect a pre-amp to an amplifier and thought, why not try them out with the Bludento. Wow! I could not believe how much better it sounded. Like it was muffled before. Later, I purchased a $25 RCA cable that sounded pretty much the same (World's Best RCA cables). Thank you for your time sharing your experiences.
I've been tempted to upgrade from my IFI Zen Dac II. The Geshelli looks sweet and other reviews are great, but truth is, I don;t need all of the inputs. I only listen to my music via headphones and I only use the balanced "pentagram" cable anyway. I sold all my components because they just took up space and I rarely used any of them. As tempted as I am with the J2, it's just way more complex than I need. And truth be told, my Zen Dac II is really, really sweet. I guess when you simplify your life from an audio standpoint, you just don't need the bells and whistles. It really does look nice though. I mean really nice. Thanks for this review. I enjoy anything you post.
Saved this video, but just watched with my coffee. A bit of a chuckle that you had to come clean on the burrito. I have some guilt about my humor sometimes. Eats me up a little every-once-and-awhile. Sometimes when someone takes me seriously, it's the funniest. Most that get mad at me laugh later.
Even without the endorsement as your favorite sounding DAC, the value proposition is outstanding. So many DACs in this price range have things I don't want/need like a remote and USB. I really dig the look and enjoy having 1 or 2 conversation pieces standing out among the cluster of black and silver boxes.
Hmm... I've got a J2 on the way with the 9026PRO chip. Now, I'm thinking I'll want an AKM one, too. 😋 Love your channel, Randy! I've been putting a system together based on your recommendations and it's all been wonderful!
I received my JNOG2 DAC and Archel 2.5 XL 3 days ago. I initially was using it close to the desktop computer (my music source), and was just using the stack with Audioquest Nighthawk headphones. It took a half hour, or so before they started sounding good. Definitely more musical than my computers sound card. I upgraded the included USB cable, and the sound got smoother (buttery). Then I moved the stack closer to my Outlaw receiver.l hooked the DAC to the receiver using the RCA outputs with World’s Best Cables RCA connects. It got rid of some harshness in the upper midrange of my Martin Logan 35XT speakers. I thought the soundstage was plenty good horizontally, and vertically depending on the music it was fed. I hooked up the J2 to the Archel 2.5 XL using World’s Best Cables XLR connects. Even though the USB cable I was using then was 15 ft. I didn’t seem to lose any performance with the headphone amp. Now I’m set. The only down side to where it’s at is I have to get up to control music files at the computer. Thanks for recommending these products, Randy. As a bonus I received three burrito stickers with my order. Gotta love that Florida family.
I've been a hifi nerd for a while but got away from it using smart speakers. Today I finally got my J2 AKM from Geshelli. It's my first DAC and I gotta say that I was BLOWN AWAY at how much better is sounds! For me, it was the last missing piece that made the rest of the system come together. I couldn't stop listening. @cheapaudioman, thanks the great reviews/content!
Great review! Just placed my order with your link. Denafrips was on the wish list for a long time but its still pricey. Hope the AKM will do the job. Thanks Randy!
Some might find this interesting/helpful. I've had the jnog2 akm for about a month now paired with elac navis arb51's. I was a bit underwhelmed at first compared to the schiit modi multibit (original without usb unison). There was slightly better soundstage and upper frequency clarity compared to former dac. I'm happy to report after plugging in audiquest jitterbug fmj that everything opened up with the soundstage and detail. It truly is the kind of sound I've been after for the last 6 years. The emotions that came out of the music hearing tracks I've heard over and over before is staggering. Stuff I've heard many times over caused literal tears. I'm not sure if some of it is the dac needed some burn in period? But it seems this usb line conditioner any jitter made an absolutely huge difference for this dac.
@Ross Leaver I wouldn't pretend to be an engineer. All I can say is that based on the reviews of the jitterbug fmj and my first hand experience, it made a massive difference for my setup into pc via usb. Which is known to have tons of noise and interferences. I would hardly call 70 bucks expensive for what it has done in my case. Doesn't help? Then return it
The thing I love about geshelli labs is if someone boring only wants a little black box and not a flashy DAC they can still customise it on the website to be a little black box, there’s options for everybody lmao
I just recently received my new Geshelli J2 with the ES9026PRO chip. From my initial test with my Audiolab 6000CDT, playing various discs such as the wonderful James Taylor "Gorilla", I'm here to report a very solid and wide soundstage, with ultra clear natural definition of voices and instruments. The tricky controls of the J2 were actually not bad if one reads the tersely written instructions on line. I fiddled with the Power and Input buttons just to experiment with the various features of the unit with no problem. My setup initially is to utilize the coax digital input on the rear panel. Results were very very good indeed. Tomorrow I'll experiment with the optical input. I didn't get the USB because I don't utilize my computer very much for audio source. For those folks considering a DAC upgrade at this time I would urge you to consider the Geshelli J2 with the ES9026PRO chipset with no trepidation whatsoever. The relative low cost and high performance level makes it a no brainier. Incidentally my case option was the aluminum dark charcoal with amber faceplate. A thing of beauty.
Just got this J2 AKM today. AB tested it with the Denafrips Ares II. I much prefer the J2. It’s a cleaner sound with more details, air and bass control. Sherri has provided superb customer service as well. Thanks to your recommendation Randy. It’s part of my CAM system comprising Emotiva PT2 and A2 out to Elac Unifi Reference. Bass backed up by RSL Speedwoofer MK2s. I reckon it’ll take double the MSRP to get a better overall sound experience.
I absolutely love my J2. I’ve had it few months maybe a year now. I kinda wish I would have gotten the wood enclosure though. Every time someone asks me about what DAC to get I always tell them to get the J2.
Randy! Awesome review! This is the DAC review I have been waiting for. This version of the J2 will be my next purchase. Thank you so much, brother! God bless!!!!
Thanks for the review, Randy. After a bit of moving gear around, I tried the J2 on my main living room TV, digital out to the single ended in stereo to my Yamaha AVR. It has a DTS Cinema setting that is similar to a Dolby Prologic surround for 5.1. Long story short, the dialog was so much better, I don't think I'll switch back! Now I need to buy another J2 for my HiFi system.
my TV only outputs 48 htz as most I think, but wth that's fine. I just found out when switching optical leads via (switcher) remote & noticed it when playing Amazon H/D thru TV app then over to the WiiM streamer thru my dac. ps my optical switch only supported 96htz instead of 192htz, I should have looked closer to the spec's, new switch coming tomorrow that supports 192.....long post but may help someone...peace
lol, i just got done listening to the first 3 or 4 tracks of an album I know very well, on my new Geshelli Labs JNOG2S with Sparkos op-amps on single-ended out on a pair of Q350's/SVS PB2000 sub and...WOW! He hit it dead on with "in control of the bottom end" comment. I heard things I haven't heard on this album I've played a thousand times. Just incredible first impression.
New AKM 4499 that Geno mentioned to you at the show you made a video of will be in my hands in 2 weeks. SparkosLabs SS2590 dual pro in SE and either 2 SS3602's in the balanced side or, if I can sneak in 2 more SS2590's I am ready to go!
You should try this with OPA1656 opamp. It will need SOIC to PDIP adapter to be able to go inside the DAC. The sound is really great. I paired it with Emotiva B2+ and I’m blown away!
mate Cheapaudioman, from Malta over here and I follow each and every video. just to tell you that I really like your videos and always end up with a smile (especially the Sith Audio adverts lol) just wished to point out for you that the "cutscene" music keeps overlapping for couple of seconds while you are already starting explaining after the "cutscenes". might maybe look into it as it can at times be annoying :) just a friendly suggestion this is. thanks again for your videos !
J2 arrived yesterday. Fed it with Bluesound Node 2i. Im impressed and Im hardcore analog. My audiophile pressed records still have the edge, but this affordable digital option is definately audiophile worthy.
@@krupkake1 I didnt do any AB test with / without J2, but overall Id say there is an improvement. My Qobus free trial ran out so only played 5 or 6 songs, but I will subscrbe. Also bypassed my 20 year old $2k cd player's DAC, running it through J2, and felt there was an improvement there.
How did you connect this to your bluesound? I use Tidal and listen to MQA and I see this DAC doesn't support MQA so I'm a little hesitant. I like my MQA.
@@matrix311 The J2 has many I/o ports. I use the coaxial input from the Node 2i and optic input from cd player. Not sure about MQA, but if J2 doesnt support it you might go with another DAC.
Personally I think the wood casings look awesome, but you have to pick the right wood and matching faceplates. Photos don't really do it justice, have to see them in person. I have a Geshelli stack (J2 and E2) for my headphone setup, they both have Purple Heart cases with the Smoke color front and back plates. I also switched out the aluminum volume knob on the E2 amp to a matching Purple Heart knob. It looks way better than any of my other gear from Schiit (Modi 3, Modi Multibit) or Topping (E50 in red). I also think it looks better than similar offerings from SMSL, JDS Labs, Massdrop, etc.
As always thanks for what you do Randy !!! I'd really like to hear your thoughts on comparisons to DAC's in products such as Peachtree Audio, Anthem, Hagel, NAD, and Naim. Those companies never seem to have their internal DAC's compared against externals. Thinking about ordering a Wiim streamer and a J2 simply because of your recommendation.
Thanks Randy! I've been waiting for this review and I'm not disappointed. They do great work over at Geshelli. I'm keeping my Sabre J2 though. I love it too much to ever replace it! 👍👍👍
I own the original JNOG AND ERISH along with the Focal Elex, and the sound is mind blowing! I listen to Qobuz and local files through Audirvana Studio. For listening on the go, I rock my LG V60 and soon will pair it with Final Audio A8000.
Randy, Cost difference aside, wondering how you think this compares sonically to the Denafrips Ares 2? I know you and many others hold the Ares in high regard… Thanks!
I'm new to the DAC market and would like to know what's the advantage to having the USB option on a DAC (especially if the transport already has one)? Thanks!
@@sleightofmind2016 USB is for connection to a PC. Typically, the optical input will provide faster sample rates / better bitrate is supported over USB. It's highly unlikely you can tell the difference. A practical issue is that USB audio and optical are going to use different drivers. Depending on your PC's software, you might prefer one over the other.
Before the AKM fire and all the hype I purchased their Enog2 pro. AKM 4493 chip with 1642 opamps. Fast forward to the hype and the Saber J2's.. I emailed G-Labs and was honestly told I may or may not notice a difference between those 2 models, if there was a difference it would be small to unnoticeable. And I appreciate their honesty and very very quick replies. So now I wonder what did they do different with the J2 other than the "new?" chip? Are these after the fire 4493 chips any different? 4493EQ?? And while their much older dac is very competent I use a transparent RME dac for digital music as well as the digital preamp. Sound quality can very much depend on the ear of the beholder, but calling something the best is a bold statement lol. I am glad people are happy with it
My Geshelli dac was the best $ I have spent. System is Geshelli J2, Vidar, Freya, Sony Cd player, RT 83 Turntable, paradigm speakers. Reliable as gravity. Works and sounds great. But you can take my Geshelli out of my cold, dead hands.
I have a Music Hall MMFCD25 cd player with a Burr Brown PCM1732 internal dac. This player is about 20 years old but plays and sounds decent. I was wondering would using an external dac under $400 make much of an additional improvement.
Randy...I finally ordered this in aluminum/smoke and I look foward to an a/b against my SMSL SU-6 with both fed by the WIIM Pro and then fed through my vintage Marantz Sm-7 amp to RP-8000Fs. Good news is living overseas (military) I think it would sell in a snap if I don't like it. Fingers crossed and thanks for the insight!
@@j-rod6420 The J2 is definitely not as bright or analytical as the SU-6. It is less sibilant and gives a warmer presentation. Bass is plentiful with either DAC, but the J2 seems a little more contolled. I just received a Willsenton R8 tube amp a month ago and now the J2 SINGS in the analog chain. I kinda wish I would have got the socketed version of the J2 now, but that is only to "future proof" my hifi and allow for discrete XLR outputs for connection to XLR capable amps down the road.
You’ll need to come off the fence Randy and tell us what you really thought.. I don’t even know if I need a dac, but I’m nearly tempted to just buy this unit now!! 😂🤘🏴😂
Hey guys I have a question if a DAC would it make a difference if use in pair with a Marantz 7706 processor and How it will be connected to it, coaxial? Optical? Help please to decide. I enjoy this review
Great review! Makes me wonder what, if anything, I'd miss getting the $350 AKM (yeah, with USB and wood case) based J2 at less than half the price, instead of the $880 Denafrips Ares II? I heard one guy say the AKM J2 had BETTER bass than the Ares II. Even if I spent another $60 for a linear power supply, I'd still come out better.
@@michaellucas4953 ah, but people do hear a difference and there's the rub. If the two J2 DACs are designed by the same competent engineers, and are using the same analog op-amps, then any differences have to mainly be between the DAC chips themselves. Many (like Randy) have noted the better bass of the AKM chip based one over the others. And one guy on here I talked with said the AKM one came very close to sounding as good as the Denafrips Ares II, with even better bass than the Ares II delivers. Of course everyone raves about the "scale, imaging, and soundstage" of R2R DACs like the Ares II, the Pontus II, Shuman Ladder, and on up the food chain into DACs costing more than $4K. And yes, those on Audiogon (an audio forum) who have such equipment (and more importantly, commensurately priced gear and speakers in good rooms) say they can hear differences that are better at any price range. For me, the $350 J2 AKM version or Schiit $800 Bifrost 2/64 are likely "good enough" for my ~$7K system, but I sure wish I could hear the $880 Ares II or "better" Musician Pegasus just as a point of comparison to see what they present. One guy, iiWi Reviews, reviewed a $300 Aune X8 MK. VIII (uses a ESS Sabre DAC chip) that has user replaceable op-amp chips (no soldering required) and he found a HUGE difference in changing them out (they are $50 to $80) and found ones by Burr Brown and Sparkos were excellent in presentation. Maybe Geshelli Labs uses better op-amps in their J2 as a baseline.
Based on Randy's review, I decided to give this a try. I received it about a month ago, with customized case and all. Yes, I go for looks too. I love the detail that this produces which is amazing. However, the one thing that I'm not really sure of yet is whether it packs enough bass punch. Compared to my Rotel 1572 mark ii, I much prefer the Rotel's internal DAC. The Geshelli feels like it's a little soft on the bass punch. I know, a lot of you are going to say it's just a very linear DAC. I don't know. I'm not sure what I'm hearing, is it linear, or is it just not punchy enough? Thoughts?
Hi, loved the review, so much so that I'm definitely going to buy one. I just need to know if I need the USB option? I'm connecting a wiim streamer and maybe a CD transport. Currently using a Topping E 30 and Chromecast audio, will I see a significant difference? All the best 👍
Alia iacta est. Just ordered an AKM version this morning. It HAS to be better than what comes out of my AppleTV. I started listening to Tidal and even that sounds noticeably better than Apple Music on many recordings…so time to DAC it up.
Randy. Great review. I currently own the J2 classic with the ESS Pro Chip. Does the newer ESS chip sound the same as the classic. Therefore do your comparisons of the newer ESS version to the AKM version apply to all ESS J2 dacs. Thanks
Two of my three systems have a J2 (the third uses a Denafrips Ares II). I've upgraded just about every component in all three systems over the past year, but until I can afford to spend >$1k each to replace my J2s, they're staying where they are.
Which dac chips do you have on ur j2? I need something I guess warmer sounding or that adds more punch in the mids. My system has detail on top but feels a bit thin in the mids
I got another interface for my desktop a week ago. It's nice. Something like this just sounds so much more interesting though...gonna keep this tab open in case I get a little too drunk some night soon..
DAC newbie question: I purchased two Geshelli Labs (GL) J2 AKM chipped units w/USB C. Question: Can I run a CD player (or other digital source) into the GL J2 then into my monoblocks w/o a need to use a pre-amp??? Excuse my naiveite, but how can I most cleanly play digital sources into my loudspeakers. I have tons of headphones, but I am really interested in how to best use this DAC (my first) out of the CD player, streaming or other dig source into my IMF RSPM IV transmission lines or other. Thank you & I hope it's not too stupid a question. Randy your work is 1st-class & I really appreciate your frank & brutally honest commentary & wry sense of humor!! Keep up the great work!!!
This dac has no volume adjustment feature, so your monoblocks will receive the full 2V (4V on balanced) signal. That's full volume. You need a dac with volume adjustment or a separate preamp to put between this dac and your monoblocks.
@P T op asked about his cd player, but sure, let's assume other streaming sources with digital volume adjustment. Read any hifi discussions about digital volume adjustment, and you will find the consensus that it is inferior to analog volume control as there is a lot of math involved changung the bitstream and the signal to noise ratio is also taking a hit. It works in a pinch, but it is far from the ideal solution in a system the op described.
This will be my next DAC. I'm just wondering if I should pair it with the A90 discrete. That's what Zeos did. I can imagine that would be an awesome setup.
I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a Geshelli J2. I just purchased a Topping DX3Pro. I can still return the Topping if need be. If I keep both, is this just overkill? Also, I ripped all my music from CD to hard drive. Can I run my hard drives directly into my system or will I still need to run it through my laptop then into my dac? Will the optional Amanero USB help me with this or do I need the USB as an add-on. I am new to thus newer world of stereo equipment ( was more knowledgeable in the 70s and 80s) so my questions may sound like rookie questions.

Not AKM though. Too bad this video came out after I got my DAC.
I'm a bit new to this stuff -- how do you use the USB?
Hi which version did you buy?
@@angusflood4530 J2 AKM with Amenaro USB module in charcoal aluminum case with smoked front/back panel.
Thank you as always Neil for your sharing your expertise and advice.
How much for that Ares II?
Which LPS do you use?
My LPS for my J2, from AliXpress is in the country, just waiting for delivery!

Randy, man, good job RIPPIN that ad spot. Ya really HOT BOXED us with that one! Never let anyone tell you that you are full of hot air.
My new AKM J2 came with a burrito(sticker). Gotta love these folks!

Bought it 2 days ago with the AKM chip before your video OMG now I am even more excited BTW Randy your best video ever love it thanks 👍
Did you like it?
I do have that. I'll check that combo out
This goes towards my theory that it isn't just the DAC chip that makes a good piece of kit, that a good engineer can make a middling DAC sound good with careful design of the rest of the device or make an excellent DAC chip sound worse than it should.
All that, and the op-amps, as well. The J2 has 3 output op-amps from Texas Instruments - 1 for the single ended and 2 for the balanced.
I mean the RME Adi-2 DAC (1300 USD) also uses the same chip as my 125 USD DAC hat for rasberry Pi. So it's not the DAC chip!
How about the theory that pampering of the reviewer by the manufacturer can lead to a more favourable review?
I bought the J2 after watching this review. Best $250 piece of audio gear on the planet!!!!! Thanks you so much.
Randy, I just ordered the J2 AKM based on your review. Can't wait to get it.
Thanks!
The oak matches my homemade stereo rack. So I'll have to get that if I buy one. LOL. Would look nice.
what is the "Use case" for the USB connection?

Hmm... I've got a J2 on the way with the 9026PRO chip. Now, I'm thinking I'll want an AKM one, too. 😋 Love your channel, Randy! I've been putting a system together based on your recommendations and it's all been wonderful!
About to put an order in the J2S, which I think they recently added. I opted for all the upgrades with the exception of the Optional USB input.
I will certainly be looking to buy this DAC in the near future, but with the CAM pallet special case. 😁
Hope you enjoy it!
How it is?
Is the jitter bug just a glorified expensive ferrite choke moulded into a usb adapter?
@Ross Leaver I wouldn't pretend to be an engineer. All I can say is that based on the reviews of the jitterbug fmj and my first hand experience, it made a massive difference for my setup into pc via usb. Which is known to have tons of noise and interferences. I would hardly call 70 bucks expensive for what it has done in my case. Doesn't help? Then return it
The thing I love about geshelli labs is if someone boring only wants a little black box and not a flashy DAC they can still customise it on the website to be a little black box, there’s options for everybody lmao
LOL I have as black as it can be J2.. Yea it's doable. 🤣
Great Channel & super helpful (in the market for some new audio this Fall)
I absolutely love my J2. I’ve had it few months maybe a year now. I kinda wish I would have gotten the wood enclosure though. Every time someone asks me about what DAC to get I always tell them to get the J2.
Is the bass good?
I paired it with Emotiva B2+ and I’m blown away!
mate Cheapaudioman, from Malta over here and I follow each and every video. just to tell you that I really like your videos and always end up with a smile (especially the Sith Audio adverts lol)

that's on purpose.
J2 arrived yesterday. Fed it with Bluesound Node 2i. Im impressed and Im hardcore analog. My audiophile pressed records still have the edge, but this affordable digital option is definately audiophile worthy.
Cool. I have the Node 2i as well. How did the J2 improve the Node’s sound? Which specific songs were improved?
I have the ESS 9938 version. It’s a great sounding Dac. It’s smooth and full. I don’t think I’d trade it for the AK.
Seems like the perfect dac to marry to the wiim mini streamer for a killer low cost system!
It's a great combo. I use the WiiM to stream hi res music from Qobuz to the J2 and it's beautiful.
Will you be reviewing the J4499 once it is available Oct 2nd 2023?
great video! Based on your recommendation I just ordered the J2. I picked the AK version. Keep up the excellent work
UPDATE: took a month but I finally got it. Hooked it up right away and I am loving this DAC. Good investment. Thanks again for the review.
100% was thinking this the other day too. It would be fantastic to see what the differences are because the price difference is crazy!!!
Yooo maybe try the J2 socketed version ?
Thanks Randy! I've been waiting for this review and I'm not disappointed. They do great work over at Geshelli. I'm keeping my Sabre J2 though. I love it too much to ever replace it! 👍👍👍
I own the original JNOG AND ERISH along with the Focal Elex, and the sound is mind blowing! I listen to Qobuz and local files through Audirvana Studio. For listening on the go, I rock my LG V60 and soon will pair it with Final Audio A8000.
Randy,
Cost difference aside, wondering how you think this compares sonically to the Denafrips Ares 2? I know you and many others hold the Ares in high regard… Thanks!
You can choose "Wenge" wood and it's dark brown/black in color. You get the black box. I just ordered one with the USB option.
I'm new to the DAC market and would like to know what's the advantage to having the USB option on a DAC (especially if the transport already has one)? Thanks!

It's highly unlikely you can tell the difference. A practical issue is that USB audio and optical are going to use different drivers. Depending on your PC's software, you might prefer one over the other.
@@a3marketing991 Thank you.
Finally ordered one! Looking forward to it!
cargo crate looking box I love it
Love the submariner humour. “Sith Audio Brick Makers, for turning your liquids into solids.”
Awesome review!!! hope you also review the new Aune X8 VIII with swappable opamps.
Ordered it today to replace my Schitt Modi 3+.
I needed another DAC for downstairs, Ordered it in White and clear glass with the AKM. Let's see how it sounds.
@cheapaudioman Is there any benefit whatsoever to plugging a WIIM Pro into a Geshelli Labs J2 or is it redundant? Thanks, Brent
I ordered a Geshelli stack with the AKM, USB input, and red oak cases. I mostly ordered them for the burrito because I’m hungry.
What??? No burrito??? I’m canceling my order!!!!
I bought one after this review and it just blew away my DACMagic 200 so I sold that one. It is very good DAC for this price.
They should include the burrito, If they did, I'm in.
Just ordered one, thanks Randy!
I am glad people are happy with it
Hi. It's a complete redesign from the ENOG2.
@@geshellilabs4411 Right on..Thank you 👍
Does anyone know what the differences are between the 3 different chip options?
ES9026PRO or ES9038Q2M or AKM4493 chip.
How did it compare?
@@j-rod6420 The J2 is definitely not as bright or analytical as the SU-6. It is less sibilant and gives a warmer presentation. Bass is plentiful with either DAC, but the J2 seems a little more contolled.
I just received a Willsenton R8 tube amp a month ago and now the J2 SINGS in the analog chain. I kinda wish I would have got the socketed version of the J2 now, but that is only to "future proof" my hifi and allow for discrete XLR outputs for connection to XLR capable amps down the road.
Love the design of the pallet case!
You’ll need to come off the fence Randy and tell us what you really thought..
I don’t even know if I need a dac, but I’m nearly tempted to just buy this unit now!! 😂🤘🏴😂
yeah. Lots of ambiguity in this review. I need to commit next time.
@@cheapaudioman I used to be indecisive… but now I’m not so sure..😂🏴🤘
@@cheapaudioman lol
Hey guys I have a question if a DAC would it make a difference if use in pair with a Marantz 7706 processor and How it will be connected to it, coaxial? Optical? Help please to decide. I enjoy this review
I bought this dac on your recommendation. It’s a keeper.
I was ready to buy.... They dont export to Sweden for some season 😢
You shouldn't be able to hear a different. Unless one of them is broken. The amplifier of your choosing is where you should hear a difference.
Thoughts?
Me too, the bass is a deal breaker.
Thanks
Good question. Randy could you elaborate for us?
The pallet look is great!
How about Gustard A26 which is 1500$ or EverSolo Z8 (699$) compared to Geshelli AKM version
Two of my three systems have a J2 (the third uses a Denafrips Ares II). I've upgraded just about every component in all three systems over the past year, but until I can afford to spend >$1k each to replace my J2s, they're staying where they are.
Do you feel the ares II is superior?
@@marcuswinesalot8594 For its particular use case (a large living room), yes. But for my desktop and headphone setups, the J2 is plenty.
I emailed Sherri over there and she replied within minutes. I’m getting it soon in the wood case shown on their site. 99 dollar option.
Quick question - Bluesound Node + Geshelli a good idea? Many thnaks for all your vids.
@P T If you thought that's adequate as volume adjustment, then I have nothing else to say to you.
It works in a pinch, but it is far from the ideal solution in a system the op described.
ive got a vintage system that maybe use boost in top end detail..... hrmmmm im torn
I have tried j2 via coax, optical and usb. And usb is far superior compared to other two options. Just in case anybody is curious.
Just ordered mine. I got the es9026pro version, though. 😁
That’s a smooth chip.
I've got one on order with the 9026PRO, too. Can't wait to hear it!
@@Fuegoturbo yeah, buddy! I'm anxiously awaiting. 😁
Being new to this component, I was wondering what is the practical application I would use it for. Thanks.
This will be my next acquisition. Currently using the Topping E50 which to be fair is very good if not boring to look at.
Randy, another good one! Do you have plans to make a playlist of the different audio equipments under “Recommended”?
Could you use a subwoofer if you hook up the preamp with xlr to poweramp?
