    A month ago I sent my J2 AKM 4493 to Geshelli to be upgraded to the J2S board with AKM 4499EX and Sparkos SS3602 on the XLR output. The cost was akin to buying another J2, but it proved to be a no brainer. The results are easily worth it. Anyone with a decent system who knows the J2 well will hear the improvement in soundstage depth and dynamics within the first minute. This is a stellar product made by stellar people.

    I don't doubt that it sounds as good as you say that it does. But at a total cost of almost $670, to say that "high-end just got destroyed by" is like saying that one Bentley just destroyed another one. With a base price of $260, the cost of the options are more than 1.5x the base price. As others have pointed out, at that price it sounds like it's time to start comparing it to other $700 DACs, not $200 or $300 DACs.

    It's got a good clock: Crystek CCHD-575 oscillator

    I thought long and hard about getting the Geshelli loaded, went with a Bifrost 2/64 for the reason that it is modular, when they upgrade it I can buy just the upgrade parts and swap them myself. DACs and the tech changes too often and too fast for me to lock in on something. As far as I know Schiit and McIntosh on their integrated and pre-amps offer this. I’m sure there are others

      @@basilisk420 He's already gone on record as saying he likes the previous J2 with AKM 4493 better than the Ares II, which he gave away to one of his Patreons after getting the J2. Safe to say he thinks this improved J2 AK4499EX "walks all over" the Denafrips. I've owned the Ares II and the ESS version of the J2, and personally, I thought the Ares II was much better. It's not the comparison you are looking for, but it's all subjective in the end. I actually sold the Ares II recently in favor of the Ares I (rare find). I think the Ares I is more to my taste as the Ares II would on some occasion get too bright.
      What I've learned to do is be patient when all these new products come out that are supposedly the best, and then buy them on the used market when someone inevitably sells it. That way I can purchase them at a reduced price in case it doesn't work out for me, and I can re-sell at minimal or no loss. This practice has served me really well for this often expensive hobby.

No idea how it sounds, but features wise it is really rich, has a headphone amplifier, i2s input, bluetooth capability, pre-amp function, remote control, MQA, and it has a screen. I woke up this morning at 3am to pee then realized it was release day at Geshelli and proceeded to give them my money! I have a modest system; Yamaha A-s301 with Polk R100 fed exclusively with Wiim and Tidal, of which I’m extremely happy with (the internal 301 dac is not bad at all to my ears). But I’m confident that this dac with the sound improvements along with the ability to now integrate my tv will be end game for me.

    I'd like to hear the IIWI channel do a "bromance free" review on a Geshelli AKM product. He is always fair and objective and does excellent comparisons with other comparable DAC's, dollar wise. I remember him saying that for some reason he just can't seem to get a Geshelli product into his country for a review. No problem for him to get other American made products like Orchard Audio or Schiit though. I wonder why that is?

    • @geshellilabs4411

      I'm not sure what you're insinuating here. This review is the fourth on this DAC with the AKM4499EX. Check out Passion for Sound, Tone Deaf Monk and Fresh Reviews. They all dropped theirs before this one. Your reviewer is in a country we do not ship to. The companies you are referring to are much larger than ours and may have the connections to do so. And since I'm a female, I'm not really into the whole "Bromance thing" so you're clear of that with this one -Sherri

      @NosEL34 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, he is by far the most concise and unbiased subjective reviewer of Dacs. Very thorough while his dac to dac comparisons are always appropriate like you mentioned. If you've been watching Randy long enough you know his love (bromance 😂) for American made products like Geshelli, Schitt, and Emo..so sometimes you have to take his enthusiasm with a grain of salt so to speak. He does use a lot of these products in his own systems and for review reference though. I saw Sherri replied that they don't ship that direction. Even if they did iiWi was explaining just the other day that shipping and taxes from the US is as high as 50% of the product cost..which is a lot to spend for a review and then sit on a product when he pays out of pocket (not a demo)

    Maybe it's just a design choice, but I don't understant the point of having those Opt/Spdif connections on the front. The main inputs and outputs are still on the back, right? So if I'm connecting it to an amp, I would connect to optical to my source and then use the RCA outs to go to the amp... Why would you want ports on the front like that? Is it possible to get the DAC without these superfluous connections on the front?

    • @Dreforian
      @Dreforian ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I recall the explanation correctly, it was designed with consideration for the arrangement of devices. One might expect to stack or sit this side by side with an amp (or stand alone), but the front inputs accommodate a depth-oriented arrangement as well. Imagine a train of devices with your source at the front, the J2 in the middle behind the source, and your amp at the back behind everything. Minimizes cable runs/bends. Saves space horizontally and vertically. Also recall it has a metal case option (the OG) which might make it less of a show piece and more just another link in the chain. Personally I'd gladly trade out the front inputs for friendlier controls or cost saving however. Dem options get expensive fast.

  • @NeilBlanchard

    I agree wholeheartedly that this J2S AKM 4499EX DAC is stunningly great! The music / harmonic detail and clarity and layering - is "3D" and so many recordings are delectable and delicious! It is *so* difficult to hit Stop/Pause when listening with this DAC in my system!
    Small addition to the front controls - the right button that selects the input - with a long press and release takes it from default/high gain down to medium gain, and then a second long press and release takes it into low gain. A third long press and release goes back to default/high gain mode.

      So you bought the new one eh? I like to think I'm smart because I'm buying the DAC last in my current system build. Because the latest and greatest is always 6 months from now.
      I also don't feel bad for those that bought preamps and receivers with built-in, now outdated dacs. Sweet validation when I espouse, "Ya gotta' keep-em separated". Digital from analog that is. Upgrade paths are cleaner & targeted.

      @@gordonbeall6667(continued)) And if you only need to power the J2S, then there is a 12V 50W unit, that has 2 outputs (both 12V) that is a bit less than $100 from Ali Express, and there are a number of 12V 25W units that are less money, and are quite good. I had the Ares II for over a year and did both 1.6 and 1.8 updates. Ended up flashing it back to the original 1.0 firmware as it sounded the most natural in tonality to me even if I had to give up some soundstage width and resolution gained from the newer firmwares. Actually it was a lesson in not thinking every new shiny toy is an improvement because I ended up selling the Ares II when I found a used Ares I, which I think sounds even better than Ares II with original firmware. Tone is the most important aspect to me and the original Ares has the best tone. Now I don't think about getting a new DAC at all.

    I appreciate that it's likely the best implementation of the 4499 thus far. But there is a tough competition in this price range, with great functionality and build quality. With the new J2 you have to accept how basic it is. If I had that kinda money to spend on a DAC, I would probably try to pass beyond the 1k mark and look for something less DIY.

    Geshelli is difficult to buy here in the UK and by the time you've added VAT, delivery and import duties, quite a bit more expensive. Not knocking Geshelli, that's just how it is. For anyone in the UK/Europe, there's an alternative which has also been described as "the best DAC under 1000" (albeit Euros, not dollars).
    This is the Aune X8 XVIII Magic FPGA DAC, which also allows you to add a Sparkos op-amp, plus Aune's XP2 linear power supply -- all for a total of around the same cost as the Geshelli when bought in the USA. To add the rather large Sparkos, you have to remove the small op-amp cover on the bottom and leave it off, covering it with something like a section of a plastic pillbox (as I have done) secured unobtrusively to the underside with Duck tape. Raising the DAC on small speaker spikes or similar, it looks fine as you don't notice anything underneath.
    The modded X8 is a very fine DAC and I only wish I could compare it to the Geshelli. It'd be really interesting to do that, but unfortunately I can't justify the cost to experiment.

      @@londreslush I trust Randy enough to think you wouldn't be disappointed soundwise, but because of the extra costs, you might like to think about the Aune X8 + Sparkos (bought on Ebay from the USA for c.£100) + XP2 power supply -- cost me £450 all in, which I think would work out appreciably cheaper than the Geshelli.
      I wish I could say the modded Aune equals or betters the Geshelli, but as I haven't heard the latter, I can't be absolutely sure. It's certainly a very fine DAC combo, though. I use it with pretty good equipment including a fine preamp and Decware ZF15M open baffle clones I built myself -- both would cost you around £6.5K combined if you bought the commercially built speakers.

Wasn't expecting it to be an additional fee nor only available in the socketed version.

    • @Artemis_Prix
      @Artemis_Prix ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I believe so. You can always just get the Sparkos op-amps on the RCA outputs which would save you quit a bit. That's what I did and I was impressed. I kept my 4493 J2 for a few days to do back to back comparisons. The depth of the soundstage was immediately apparent as well as the added height. However, it's important to ensure you have cleaned your system of any added noise from your sources because the gain is higher and will result in the noise floor being higher as well. I need to buy power supply filters and a LPS for my sources to mitigate the same in my system. Note, I'm using a recapped Carver amp and not a modern unit so my noise is undoubtedly higher than average. Good luck.

    I made an earlier comment as a reply to a Neil Blanchard comment which is probably buried in any number of layers, so am making one here a bit more easily seen. To be brief… I have had this DAC for almost a month now (see other comment for explanation if you care to) and all I can say is that not only is Randy right in all he says, but so are all of the comments from those of us who actually have this DAC in our systems. I have a very resolving system from the turn of the century which I won't bore you with, then added a Node 2i maybe five years ago for obvious reasons. Never all that happy with it so decided to bypass its DAC. Extremely good timing I have to say, making that decision at the end of August, because I wound up with this baby, and it's absolutely night and day, especially if you think of night as moonless in the middle of the Sahara, and you wake up looking straight east. Randy is not making this up. It’s excellent. What amazes me about all of the negative comments is that they are coming from people who have not heard it. Those who have disagree for a very good reason. The soundstage is fantastic. Enough said.
