Jeff died in 2007, but he spoke to other disabled people in his lifetime doing speeches of how life is happy. Jeff must be happy to be reunited with Fred.
The way he asked, "What made you need this wheelchair?" says everything you need to know about him. Not, "What's wrong with you?" or "What condition or disease do you have?"
I don’t know why I’m crying: because of this moment, because Mister Rogers is gone, or that I’m thankful that we had a human being like him exist at one point in time. Probably all three
Seeing Rogers sing to Jeff and Jeff start singing with him made me really tear up. The best part was their little chuckle when they mentioned the fancy chair
He didn’t try to heal the boy in the wheelchair. He didn’t tell the parents it was their fault their son was disabled. He didn’t shake them down for money to support a lavish lifestyle. He simply loved that boy for who he was. An image bearer of God.
@@dbarless While I not a big religious person myself, I think there needs to be respect for folks like Rogers that believe in God and share their belief with all of us in such a kind and thoughtful way.
As a disabled person, it’s hard to find representation that is in the positive light as a child. Mr Rogers was the first show i watched where I thought he saw us like people. It’s sad to think I had to say that in my mind as a 6/7 year old when I first started talking. Mr Rogers showed the world that we matter too and that moment meant everything to me. I know he can’t read it but to anyone who was a part of this moment, thank you for making an impact that will do more than you can even imagine 💕
Thank you for sharing! Even if he’s not here to read your praise, it made me smile. Rogers touched and did a lot for the disenfranchised and marginalized and the misunderstood. He did a lot for all of us. I miss him.
@@allamaraine8066 he sure did. I still think that disability representation in media got a long way to go but it’s exciting to see people giving us chances especially when the unemployment rate for us is extremely high
One of the sweetest Fred Rogers moments in history was when Jeffrey came back 18 years later as an adult to present him with the lifetime achievement Emmy award. Rogers literally was ecstatic to see him again and HIGH-STEPPED from his seat to the stage just so he could hug him.
I went to the US as an exchange student when I was 13 and my American mother had a picture of Jeff on the wall. She told me the story. She admired him when she saw him on television in 1981. A lot of people did, especially kids.
I love and miss you Mr. Rogers. The only Dad and babysitter I've ever known growing up. Thank you for sharing your time and talents to help us children growing up in a painful distressed world. RIP Neighbor
When I was in high school my friend and I smoked, got really high, then stumbled upon this episode on TV. By the end of it we were both just crying in his basement. It was heavy but very insightful on how different life is for everyone. Everyone has their challenges and most of the time your life is better than you think it is. R.I.P. Jeff Erlanger and Mr. Rogers.
I was home with my son, who was down with a virus, earlier this week. We just so happened to be watching PBS and this episode came on. It still resonates with me to this day and is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Bless Mr. Rogers and Jeff for still showing us in 2019 how we should treat each other and be the shining example of wonderful human beings.
This is the greatest moment in Mr. Rogers legacy, and this beautiful child with the wonderful Mr. Rogers is extremely special and will be remembered for all time Period!!!!!
I’ve had disabilities since birth, it was this episode I seen as a young child cry. It made me see that although I may be in a wheelchair I was still a child like everyone else, and every child deserves love no matter what. I may do things differently but that what makes each and every one of us unique and special. ❤
I had never experienced the overwhelming collective emotionality evoked in a group as this scene did... I'm talking an entire theatre full of people bawling, openly...
Watching this always brings tears to my eyes- watching how well he interacts with children and especially with children with disabilities. His patience and kindness is contagious. You can tell that when he says, “it’s you I like just for being you” - I think that’s a message a lot of children and adults need to hear and feel.
This scene caught me off guard as I watched it for the first time. Thankfully, it was a relatively empty theater cause I couldn’t hide the tears. It was too much. God bless them for that special moment.
I LOVE Mr. Rogers. Jeff Erlinger, Mr. Rogers, and his beautiful parents: Thank you for everything. Mr. Rogers was awesome. Your son was so very sweet. US LOVES him.
Jeff Erlanger was such a thoughtful and sweet child. He later expressed his philosophy: “It doesn’t really matter as much what I can’t do; it’s what I can do. That’s how I try and live my life.”
This was one of the themes of Mr Roger's Neighborhood. He often took very heavy topics that kids face every day and presented them so that a child could understand it. Here he was talking to someone who, except for his disability, would be a bright, intelligent, friendly, adorable 5 year old boy - and treated him on national television like a bright, intelligent, friendly, adorable 5 year old boy. He also spoke with him about his disability and his wheelchair, so that kids everywhere would understand it. I never heard the movie version where the parents explained how they had contacted Mr Rogers. He apparently had the whole meeting planned in his head already, right down to the song. Jeffrey came away with an enhanced sense of self and a new friend, and children all over the world learned a valuable lesson of kindness. All in under 3 minutes.
This moment made me cry, Mr Rogers was the kindest person on this earth. His impact on this little boy’s life and all of us makes us accept who we are. If Mr Rogers we’re alive today, I’d give him a big hug
Fred Rogers was one of the kindest people known to man. I don’t think I could ever be half as kind or as under control as he was but when I see his smiling face it always makes me want to try.
I don't know what year this was, but I remember watching this episode. Fred Rogers is the truest incarnation of what a MAN is supposed to be. It is his manliness that we should all emulate; love, care, concern, help and above all, service to others! The world needs more people like Fred, especially in these times of partisan divide! Fred, it's you I like!!!
Mr. Rogers tackled so many extremely sensitive issues with such dignity....racism (the infamous feet in pool scene), divorce, war, death....... This scene with Jeff were one of the first in television dealing with accepting handicapped people as just people.
I donated to Pbs so I could turn on mr Rogers anytime for my little ones. I sat down from a break from this wfh life to hold my two year old and watch mr Rogers. Jeff and his kind heart literally just broke me. I couldn’t stop crying at how he had so much stacked against him but he didn’t let that stop him. Jeff’s kindness, resilience and beautiful spirit is all I pray my children can be. ❤️
Mr Rogers is such a kindred spirit. Not two seconds after the piano kicked in, tears came to my eyes. I could feel the kindness before Rogers even came through the door.
When I lose sight of my humanity I often turn to Mr. Rogers for guidance. In today's world its easy to lose compassion for others but Mr. Rogers always sets me straight.
Had the great priviledge of seeing this at an early screening in Squirrel Hill, near Mr. Rogers's hometown of Latrobe. There were kids, old people and every age in-between there. Not a dry eye in the house by the time it was over.
That's the beauty in humanity... Maybe our lives are veins or sad sometimes... But sometimes we're capable of pure emotions... Just a light coming from a human soul ..
I’m watching this in 2019, not in America, when my only knowledge of Fred Rogers is Daniel Tiger cartoons. And I’m bawling my eyes out. What a beautiful moment ♥️
Idk why this specifically has such a strong impact on me but i cannot watch mr Rogers clips without tearing up a bit but especially this one makes me ball my eyes out and cry like a fountain. Im a guy, i barely ever cry, not because i try not to im actually happy most of the time, but mr Rogers fills my heart with so much happiness and joy and i tear up but it feels so good to let those tears run.

When Mr. Rogers said, "it's you I like" he meant it. How we could use his kindness and wisdom today.

He gave us that kindness and wisdom so that we could give that same kindness and wisdom to others. Such is history, death and life.
