Years ago, I was on my way home from being in the Army. I had my uniform on and missed my connecting flight to fly home. Mr. Rodgers over heard me talking to the ticket agent and he offered to give me his ticket and he would take the next flight out. Long story short, he spoke to the airlines and someone cancelled and I got home. He was exactly like the person he was on televison, a kindhearted man.

    True story:
"I read a story once about Mr. Rogers that just cemented his total coolness. One day his car was stolen in broad daylight while parked on the street in Pittsburgh. The evening news reported that Mr. Rogers car had been stolen. The next day, it was back in the same spot with a note that said, “Sorry, we didn’t know it was yours.”
    ❤️ Mister Rogers forever

That’s one of the more badass mr rogers stories. But my favorite is still how he spoke before Congress about needing a machine to record live television so that families could sit down and watch his program at the logical 6-7 o’clock after everyone’s home and parents are there to explain the important issues and answer the questions that their children would have.
Because he was discussing important issues. Like the assassination of a president.

The response was that he was no saint; he had a temper, etc. The end message was that it was his choice to react however he did. He was as human as any of us but he put in the work and effort to care about other people enough not to treat them as less than human. His message is missing with the younger generations who think only of themselves.

As a young parent, I was somewhat mystified that my kids were so crazy about MR. ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD. Yes, there were flashier shows on television. Cooler ones. But they adored his show. As the parent of adult children, I thank God for this man. My kids learned good lessons from him that supported what I was teaching them. And what their Dad was teaching them. They made good choices and excellent grades. They grew into hardworking, compassionate adults. They became good people. Their father and I are so proud. We need more folks like Fred Rogers to inspire and teach, today. Children need those role models. When the movie "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood " came out, we invited our adult kids and their dates out to dinner and to see it. No surprise. They loved it. Trolley, singing and all. Every child should have something warm, caring and wholesome to cling to. This is how we'll change the world.

Just awesome how Mr. Rogers just completely broke protocol and jumped on that stage before he was even called, so he could get as close to Jeff as he could.

With all due respect, you are missing the point. Mr. Rogers believed that everyone could love and be loving--it is our choice. We don't need to be perfect--we can make bad decisions, mistakes, be ignorant, be plain incorrect--but if we try to learn from those mistakes, if we meditate or train our minds toward healing and blessing others, than we are taking his life's work and making it mean something beyond the man himself. That is EXACTLY what Mr. Rogers wanted. If he believed that it was just about finding 'more people of excellence who are naturally selfless, kind, loving, etc.,' then why did he spend his life talking to the rest of us? Why did he agonize over the fact that people weren't listening to him? Everyone wants to somehow find the magical person or type of person whose going to change the world. As Mahatma Gandhi urged:
"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do."

I'm not a religious man but I always appreciated the sentiment of, "Mr. Rogers was not Jesus, but if Jesus came back, that's how he would have acted."

as I was growing up, a lot of older people used to make fun of Mr Rogers. he would be the butt of many jokes. But for children, he was the oasis in the middle of a chaotic home life, he was the neighbor you could run to after school. as an adult, I am honored that I had a chance to "know" Him, as much as one can from tv. I miss him. until we meet in heaven, Mr Rogers!!!!

Ginger Bread, interesting point. I guess we are the adults now, and we knew Mr. Rogers. Watching him now, I react emotionally. I wonder if I had not “known” him as a child if I would react more like those adults you mentioned. I bet I would. He really got through to us.

His wife speaks in interviews, and when people call him a saint or angel she corrects them, she mentions that saints just are good and are saints, but that her husband worked hard every day at what he did, he worked tirelessly to be that good.
So in my mind that makes him even more

Fred Rogers was one of the finest human beings who ever lived. Being a good person means accepting people for who they are.
