I bet it was the Metallica cover you heard 😁Bob Seger has such a great voice! Give a listen to “Night Moves” it was always one of my faves! Love your musical journey and I appreciate being able to tag along!❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
NO! The line "is that a woman or a man" isn't what you were thinking. Back in the 70's most if not all rock groups had long hair and would be touring through the Midwest and the bible belt where most men had some version of a military or close cropped hair cut. So they were trying to make fun of the group members with long hair.
Right, and a lot of times in the 60s and 70s when young men had long hair it was just as beautiful and long as womens hair. So if you only saw the back of them you truly couldn't tell if they were male or female until they turned around.
That's a fact. Lived through it in many bars and clubs. I had a lead guitarist that had the most beautiful, long, shiny, black hair. He used to get hit on by guys a lot until he turned around. Then the fight started when the ladies in the guy's group started fawning over him. Yeah, I was jealous. Who wouldn't be 🤣.
Metallica covered this -- Seger's been a star since the 60's -- HUGE catalogue. Old Time Rock and Roll, Main Street, Night Moves, Feel Like a Number, Her Strut... and the woman or man comment was because for nearly all of his early career, Seger wore his hair long and much of conservative America at that time still held the opinion "no son of mine's gonna have long hair"
Remember - this song is from the early '70s. A long hair band was going to get some shit in a typical truck stop. That's the way it was. This IS the original version of the song. One of the greatest songs of my generation.
As an Over The Road truck driver with over 45 years behind the wheel, this song tipifies my life more than any other. Change a few words and you have my life.
The beautiful thing about this man was he was huge in the 70’s & 80’s then vanished like a fart in the wind just to stop touring like you did to raise his children and keep his identity from his kids till they were teenagers !! Could you imagine his children finding out how huge their father was ?? 🙏
Glen Frey of the Eagles said Bob Seger took him under his wing and he learned how to do things in the studio. And then Frey lived with Jackson Browne and learned his proceds of writing songs. Other good stuff from Bob Seger: Roll Me Away, Still the Same, Against the Wind, Rock and Roll Never Forgets, and Feel Like a Number.
Alot of people have covered his song. But no one can sing it as good as Bob. They just don't have his soul! This song is one of the greatest of all times. Turn the paaaaage!
The first time I heard Bob Segar, was mid 70's and he was on Saturday Night Live, performed Night Moves and I was in love. I am 75 years young and Bob Segar is still one of my favorites. Night Moves still gives me goosebumps.
Please do Roll me away! It’s one of those that hit me in the gut. It’s the first song I heard when my father in law died. We had been taking care of him the last 2 weeks of his life. He was an outlaw biker and this song spoke of his soul.
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, my foundation band. 💗💗 From his Live Bullet Album he intro's the band members and last of all, himself. And he says, and I'm Bob Seger and I'm from Detroit, Michigan (most all of them from MI). So Detroit in the 60s and 70s and on out. Kid Rock from MI as well as Madonna and Ted Nugent. Major groups from there.
I am really loving your Podcasts, every one that has come up on my feed I am singing every word. Love Seager, and I know one of his cousins. This is the original. The others covered it.
Bob Seger has a LOT of great songs. I envy you that you get to hear them all for the first time. Some great songs to start with include: Night Movies, Mainstreet, Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser, Roll Me Away, Old Time Rock & Roll, We've Got Tonight, Like A Rock, Hollywood Nights, Rock And Roll Never Forgets, Feel Like A Number, Still The Same, and Against The Wind. Great stuff!
There's a video of this that just keeps showing different pix of him on stage throughout his career with his long hair. He was young like on that album cover. I just watched him the other day do this song with Jason Aldean. He got the short hair but it's white now. He's pretty old, but man he was having a blast!!Bob Seger is gr8 and this is my favorite of all!! ❤
Another great song you will likely relate to is Load Out/Stay by Jackson Browne. It's a tribute to the roadies that make it all possible for our rock 'n roll world. And it perfectly describes the perception of a live performer. One of the absolute best by him that we always looked forward to at the concerts, even though it signaled the end. We all left with smiles, love and appreciation for everything they sacrificed to bring the magic to us! ☮️ ❤️ 🎶 🎸 🎶
Take a look at the official video of the 1973 radio version - montage of Bob's career interspersed with him performing this song as an older guy. Bob's a national treasure, and the pride of Detroit rock!
So, the studio version of this (which no one seems to know) was released in 1973 on an album called "Back in '72" by The Bob Seger System. All the albums that The Bob Seger System released are very hard to find, they were never re-released so no tapes or CD's exist only the original run vinyl albums. In 1976 Bob formed a new band called The Silver Bullet Band and their first release was a live album called "Live Bullet" which was all Bob Seger System songs including this one (yes, the version you listened to is Live). Most likely the version you've heard is Metallica who covered this in 1999 on their "Garage Inc." album. Bob is literally the voice of Classic Rock...
Bob Seger wrote this song! His is the original. Just like Neil Diamond wrote Red, Red Wine but most people only know UB2s version. Seger had a tour bus, so it was go, go, go.
If you haven't yet done a reaction to Jackson Browne's "The Load Out/Stay" (any live version from the late 70's), I suggest that you check it out sometime. It's all about being a musician on tour... and I think you'd really like it. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and engaging reactions... I just keep coming back!
Thanks for the great reaction! At 40, you might be able to begin to relate to Seger's song 'Like a Rock'. I'm turning 60 this year, and this song is truer all the time. You might remember the phrase 'like a rock' from old Chevy commercials. I always thought Bob had kinda sold out on that onr for some cash, but I learned that Bob, being from Detroit, knew a lot of people hurting from a slumping auto industry and he worked out a deal with Chevy to support his friends.
Back in the day when it became very common for guys to grow their hair out the older or should I say old fashioned folks would say stuff like "is that a woman or a man?" He's singing his frustration at hearing that when he has to slide in somewhere to eat or whatever.
You would'nt had the reaction you did when he said "is that a woman or a man" if you would of watched the compilation video for this song. It shows the many looks he had. In the 60's, 70's and 80's most men especially musicians had very long hair.
Sure wish you would have done the video to this. It shows some live concert shots of him and the band on the road. It gives more meaning to the song. Shows him with his very long hair which makes the line "is that a man or a woman" more effective.
i like how you got it, right from jump ,"you can think about the woman or ........" and the expression on ur face is like ' ok yup' cause you knew exactly what he's talking about. ive seen other reactions to this song where they try to analyze the lyrics, thinking he's singing about a trucker. he not taking about lot lizards at a dusty truck stop ,its the hundreds of females literally throwing themselves at him at every show. you get the loneliness, the depression in his voice. you get it!
It's amazing what the difference in the musical world is between a 40 yo and a 60 yo. I grew up listening to the 60s/70s/80s rock and country but don't really know that much about the last 20 years as I gradually isolated myself from music I increasingly didn't like. My daughter grew up listening to "my" music and absolutely loves classic rock. She and I went the the Arizona State Fair around 8 or 10 years ago and watched an old but still giving it everything Meat Loaf. We were about 10 or 15 yards from the stage. It was funny to see all of the/us old people acting like teens before a legend. I don't think I'll every have another chance for something like that. They're all dead. Even Jimmy Buffet.
Bob Seger “Roll Me Away”, that’s all I can say. All the songs he writes are personal stories, thoughts and experiences, especially from when he was touring
I could see how you reacted but the sound of the amplifiers ringing in your head as you lay there in bed and you can't get rid of that ringing in your ear Oh my God how I can relate with those big Marshall amplifiers blasting in your ears!
Bob Seger is the original. "Is that a woman or a man" comes from when guys wore really long hair and the "oldsters" had trouble adjusting. It doesn't mean the same thing it does today.
Aaaah...you need to react to Jackson Browne: Load Out/Stay. They must be listened to in that order and during the same reaction. I mean, if you aren't familiar with the song(s). 😊😊
I love bob seger is an amazing singer but Bon Jovi did a awesome cover of it , my 2 favorite bands journey with Steve Perry and Bon Jovi me and my sister weren’t born till 85 our parents got us into all these bands . Check out Bon Jovi’s cover of turn the page .
There are a couple covers out there. The Metallica cover is probably the best known one. But it doesn't hold a candle to the original. The beauty of this song is its simplicity and control. One of my personal all-time favorites.
"Is that a woman or a man?" Bob was talking about his beautiful long hair that he had. It was not a thing that was accepted for men back in the 60s and early 70s. It wasn't until the late 70s to early 80s that people started being okay with men having long hair. It's such a weird thing for people to be bothered about, but that's human beings for you.

bruh night moves is one of my fav songs all time.
gotta hit it BP!!
For sure
The Metallica cover is amazing!
Talking bout them Night Moves!!!
Personally, I don't think much of Metallica's cover. I don't hate it but it completely lacks the soul of the original
NO! The line "is that a woman or a man" isn't what you were thinking. "Long-haired hippie" was not a term of affection in most of the country.
Right, and a lot of times in the 60s and 70s when young men had long hair it was just as beautiful and long as womens hair. So if you only saw the back of them you truly couldn't tell if they were male or female until they turned around.
100%! He has to get some stupid political crap in so many videos 🤦♀️
That's a fact. Lived through it in many bars and clubs. I had a lead guitarist that had the most beautiful, long, shiny, black hair. He used to get hit on by guys a lot until he turned around. Right

Against The Wind
Like A Rock
Old Time Rock and Roll
YES! YES! AND YES!!! All three are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hands down. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. He had a symphony behind him playing all the instruments. It was amazing
As an Over The Road truck driver with over 45 years behind the wheel, this song tipifies my life more than any other. Change a few words and you have my life.
Bob Seger is my favorite singer. His voice is so gritty and just rakes right across my very soul. LOVE HIM!!!
Yes❤❤❤❤
I grew up on him.. Later when I was mostly grown. He did a song with Martina McBride, Chances Are.. I still play that song 2 or 3 times a week. 😊😊😊
The beautiful thing about this man was he was huge in the 70’s & 80’s then vanished like a fart in the wind just to stop touring like you did to raise his children and keep his identity from his kids till they were teenagers !! Could you imagine his children finding out how huge their father was ?? 🙏
He WAS the epitomy of 70's rock and Roll Huge rabbit Hole!!
Welcome to the world of Bob Seger! He has an entire catalog that is a must listen.
Bob Seger is one of my favorets
Love Bob Seger!!
Glen Frey of the Eagles said Bob Seger took him under his wing and he learned how to do things in the studio. And then Frey lived with Jackson Browne and learned his proceds of writing songs.

That sax is played so perfectly at the most perfect times, it's sick.
Please do Roll me away! It’s one of those that hit me in the gut. It’s the first song I heard when my father in law died. We had been taking care of him the last 2 weeks of his life. He was an outlaw biker and this song spoke of his soul.

You can't go wrong with Bob Seger. He is low-key one of the best artists ever. Every song is fire and so good. You need to dive more into this hole.
Oh yeah Bob Seger!!! Keep going down the Seger rabbit hole please. LoL Everything this man did was awesomeness!!!
Dude ! Bob Seger Come to Poppa! is a must. you'll love it
He is awesome. He also had the crazy hit "Old Time Rock and Roll" Tom Cruise did the infamous dance to in the movie! LOVE IT❤
Bob Seger has a LOT of great songs. I envy you that you get to hear them all for the first time. Great stuff!
Roll Me Away is my favourite of his. I feel my heart soar when he sees the hawk. Incredible song.
Why do people only react to this song?? His catalog is massive!
This is one of his own hits.
There's a video of this that just keeps showing different pix of him on stage throughout his career with his long hair. He was young like on that album cover. This is a classic Bob Seger is a icon
That entire album is top 10 hits on the charts, even Chevy trucks old slogan was him , like a rock
The live version is so amazing
“Like a Rock” gives me goosebumps every time I hear it
Saw them in the 70's. I was about 14. One of my favorites ever since.
Man, music just hit different back then.
Another great song you will likely relate to is Load Out/Stay by Jackson Browne. It's a tribute to the roadies that make it all possible for our rock 'n roll world. Bob Seger is a legend
💯🧡 a song that i never fail to sing along with. Live this timeless hit 🔥
This song is a National Treasure.
If you haven't heard it, listen to "Main Street". It is fantastic....and those guitar riffs are unforgettable!
Alto Reed kills on the sax in this sing ❤
This song is so well done that it’s easy to forget that it’s recorded live. The whole band is excellent.

Bob is literally the voice of Classic Rock...
You gotta go down the Bob Seger rabbit hole. You've probably heard his voice before in the truck commercials, "Like a Rock".
Great choice another great choice is old time rock and roll
Bon Jovi sang Wanted dead or alive which is also about a band touring. They got their inspiration from Bob Seger
😊 a favorite! ❤
Bob Seger wrote this song! His is the original. Just like Neil Diamond wrote Red, Red Wine but most people only know UB2s version. Seger had a tour bus, so it was go, go, go.
Thumbs up for statement about not wanting donations for requests... a system that gives only those with money to spare what they want to enjoy
One of my favorite karaoke songs!👍🤪
You are thinking of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." Not the same words, but a similar vibe. That song too, is about being on stage and on the road.
Thanks for the great reaction! At 40, you might be able to begin to relate to Seger's song 'Like a Rock'. I'm turning 60 this year, and this song is truer all the time.

Seger wrote this. Everybody else covered it because it hit home.

Hey how y’all, family, doing??? Love me some Bob Seger and Silver Bullet Band!!!

All his stuff is good
"On the road again" is a lyric in a few different songs.
Willie Nelson (country singer), Canned Heat (blues/rock band). Two I can think of offhand.
Nice..thank you..
Bob Segar started in the 60s and recently retired. He toured for decades. He's from Michigan ❤
It's amazing what the difference in the musical world is between a 40 yo and a 60 yo. I think the Bon Jovi song you're thinking of is called "Dead or Alive." Parts of it sound similar to this song.
This is Rock.
Stay/The Load Out by Jackson Browne is another great song about touring
Now you need to check out "Old Time Rock & Roll"!
I'd like to see you react to Queensryche - Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984. Legendary voice!
It's more country-flavored....that late 70s, early 80s adult contemporary era but one of Segers best is
"Shame On The Moon"
If you like Bob, check out "Roll me Away" One of my favorites and a great story telling song.
Bob Seager put this out.
You must have heard the Chevy commercial before- Like a Rock!
That’s Seger’s song.
Like I said people have tried to cover but Bob is the best
70s -80s rock God .... Seger Rocks
Bob Seger “Roll Me Away”, that’s all I can say. All the songs he writes are personal stories, thoughts and experiences, especially from when he was touring
Like a Rock, Roll Me Away, Kathmandu
I could see how you reacted but the sound of the amplifiers ringing in your head as you lay there in bed and you can't get rid of that ringing in your ear Oh my God how I can relate with those big Marshall amplifiers blasting in your ears!
your reactions are hilarous
Bob Seger is the original. "Is that a woman or a man" comes from when guys wore really long hair and the "oldsters" had trouble adjusting. It doesn't mean the same thing it does today.
You're thinking Dead or Alive by bon Jovi I think. Bob is a legend for sure.
As a team driver with my husband. We would cover many miles listen to the drivers station on cm and that was like a truckers song. Lol
Aaaah...you need to react to Jackson Browne: Load Out/Stay. They must be listened to in that order and during the same reaction. I mean, if you aren't familiar with the song(s). 😊😊
That was a big Hit in Germany
Ya gotta hear RUSH!!! Witch Hunt from Moving Pictures is epic
this is the original!! metallica song a cover that was also a hit
Try the group White Snake singing "Here I go Again"
I was hoping you would do this one.
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band never truly got their dues!!! JMO…….
Heck out Jackson Brown’ The Load Out-Stay for a song about life o the road.
Check out the Live Bullet version of Get Out Of Denver.
Bon Jovi did Wanted about on the road, and Bob Segar is about him on the road. Two different songs same subject.
Maybe you're thinking of the lyrics of "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.
Bon Jovi did a song about travel called Wanted Dead or Alive. Different lyrics but about riding the tour bus. Metallica covered Pete's song.
It's such a weird thing for people to be bothered about, but that's human beings for you.
could it be Here I go again on my own, White Snake (David Coverdale)?
This is the original
its either the Metallica cover of 'turn the page' or you're thinking of the 80's group Whitesnake 'here I go again'
This is the only source that I have heard this song from Bob Seger is the creator of this song.
