- Headstart: Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio finds the alleged 'gentleman's deal' between former president Rodrigo Duterte and China 'disadvantageous' and does not apply to formal country policy. Former Duterte spokesperson Harry Roque said the former president and China agreed to maintain the status quo in the West Philippine Sea, and that resupply missions to the Philippine outpost in Ayungin Shoal will be limited to food and water supply, and no reconstruction.

The rhetoric of the Duterte administration that repeats China's intimidation talking points betrays their complicity with Chinese naval intrusion and aggression within the Philippines' EEZ. Duterte's subservient posturing to China's provocative behavior towards the Philippines was remarkably controversial and probably requires an investigation. China's lawless behavior in the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea is an affront not only to the Philippines but also to every country that uses the international waters of the South China Sea where major sea lanes are located and many countries around the world rely on for shipping and commerce. China must be made to comply with international laws and conventions like UNCLOS for it to preserve its good standing with the international community. Otherwise, China must be made to bear increasing pressure, like intensifying economic sanctions, from the international community until it convinces itself that complying with UNCLOS is the better alternative to defying the code of international law and reaping the unprofitable consequences that accompany such defiance of world order.
