    Very unexpected review from a German reviewer in English. It's so unusual, detailed and high quality. Even though I am not a fan of hybrid engines, I like the car a lot too.
    Keep on good reviews!

    Super review - thanks for doing it in English too! I hadn't even considered VW, but this seems like the best option. A pure electric doesn't really suit me. I just know that on a cold, wet evening I'll be thinking "I'll plug it in when it stops raining" - then I'll forget. The Golf GTE is like several different cars in one.

    • @autogefuehl

    My appreciation of the GTE is that it has a competition from within: the diesel version. What would make the car really different are the options it has and the range capabilities. I definitely prefer to ride gasoline vs diesel on long trips. Excellent review guys!

    I think the battery charge is not a stupid mode, because you're driving to the city and there are central areas that only accept electric cars. Until there you charge your battery and at that point you go full electric.

    The concept does look interesting (Electric for the daily commute and plenty of power on tap for the longer strecthes). But: One thing that puzzles me is the anticipated lifetime expectancy for the battery: I know that VW warrants it for 8 years/160KKM, but what does it cost to replace the unit? Anyone with insight on this? Thanks in advance,

    excellent review and thanks for doing it in English. I realy like that there has being going in to more depper details of the car aswell as taking the time to explain how it Works. I find the Golf GTE very interesting because of the drive line. This is some as rare as a funny hybrid. Is it fun to drive a Toyota prius? nar thats boring and i cant hardly think of other hydrid cars i want to drive. Oh yes BMW I8 i would like but Price aw. The only improvement i can think of for Golf GTE is a larger battery whit a range of up to 100 km or at least make a larger battery an option for the car. Besides that the golf GTE i something so rare as a hybrid i want to drive and that says alot when it comes from me. full Electric cars hell no to short range and a boring sound.

    I don't understand why VW has made it so you push the lever away from you when you want to manually shift up, and towards you when you shift down. This is counterintuitive. When you accelerate, you are pushed back into the seat and you pull the lever towards you to shift up. When you brake, you are pushed forwards and you also push the lever forwards to shift down. This is how it is in all racing cars with sequential shifters, but VW has chosen to do the exact opposite. Not that it matters since it has paddles, but still...

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniele G Thank you very much! Hybrid cars hp are not added equally because electric engine and petrol engine revolve at different speeds!

    • @daniele_go
      @daniele_go 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi, thanks for your answer but it is not that precise unfortunately....
      Just to be more factual, I have often (nearly always) seen that CUMULATIVE power is taken by adding electric + thermic engines.
      Let's look at one exemple:
      www.cnet.com/products/2015-bmw-i8/
      For BMW i8 they claim TOTAL power => 357= 228+129
      Who is right ....? :-))

    Nice review Thomas! Well I ended up buying one - a lovely car.
    One point of your review, have found nearly +20% range benefit for B mode compared to D - winding country lanes commute. Seems to be down to anticipating the corners rather than touching the brake pedal (B=3.7mile/kWh compared to D=3.1mile/kWh). It may be different open road unless you feather the throttle carefully in B not to cause unwanted braking.

  • @Red_Snappa
    @Red_Snappa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, one thing, (and don't take this the wrong way)...you are doing this review (awesomely) in English, so maybe it would also be a good idea to quote fuel consumption figures (along with changing the on-screen displays) to MPG rather than KPL for your English language videos, as I find myself having to pause the video whenever it appears on-screen in KPL, and then try to work out what that equates to for us in the UK/USA. Just a thought......

    As a auris hsd owner i don't understand the dsg clutch. A e-cvt will always be more reliable than the dsg due to just the number of moving parts. The biggest gain with the a hybrid is the low maintenance and in this car is undone a little by the dsg and the turbo.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pegase0013 DSG is so smooth when shifting as there are two transmissions at the same time working and the next gear is already set

    • @pegase0013
      @pegase0013 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Yes I know. the point I want to make is about reliability. The number of moving parts is in a dsg are way more than the e-cvt or any cvt. How many years warranty does vag give on the electrical installation? I have 8 years warranty on the electrial installation.

    +Autogefühl: Danke für diesen Beitrag, den ich kürzlich gesehen habe.
    Now I would like to ask you this question:
    On your model you seem to have, on top of the "GTE mode" and of the purely electric mode ("E-mode"), another three hybrid modes. I have only two of these: "battery hold" and "battery charge"; I don't have "Hybrid Auto"; I don't even have this "Hybrid" sub-menu which you have at the bottom of your screen.
    Given that your review is from September 2014, your car must be older than mine (September 2015).
    So I don't understand - was there a change in the software which my car missed?
    What is the software version number in the case of your car?
    For my car it is "0317".
    By the way this question is not only directed to you but to all other VW Golf GTE owners...

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Car ! Price is sticking point .I hope this will come to US soon. Just wish it had larger battery so as to get full Gov. Incentive here. I had a question on HVAC system does it use engine or use electric heat pump similar to other electric cars?
    Would save energy consumption to not have the engine running to heat or cool .

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, which battery gets the subvention in the US?
      As far as I understand it, it _has_ to have the electric heat pump, because you can clearly use the heating even if you are only in electric mode! They surely took that part over from the e-golf.

    Thank you for an excellent review. I am considering of buying this car. However my VW dealer doesn't have this car yet for test drive. But just by watching your review makes me want to buy it without even test driving it.
    Btw could you tell me the difference between an Audi A3 E-tron and a VW Golf GTE? Why should one buy a Golf GTE when you can have a A3 E-tron? The price difference is not that high.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amir Iranpour Hey Amir, that's a good question. We have a Audi A3 e-tron video from Holger here, but its in German. But maybe u still watch it to get some impressions. Let me sum up the most important point: The Audi is more expensive. It's rather a question of if you want a Volkswagen or a Audi. And if you want to spend the extra money on the Audi. My personal opinion: I like the exterior of the GTE more than the A3, and the interior also rocks. But the A3 also feels good when driving. Both great cars.

    I actually tried this car at at a deeler, really liked it, it was on 16" winter tires but was still ok, i think the normal 1,4 tsi tried was a bit sharper steering.
    Question, when the battery is flat, is the fun over and you only have 150hp from the tsi?

      In fact just keep 1 or 2 miles in reserve and flick into GTE mode and you'll have fun and top up electric (albeit slowly) at same time. GTE mode is rapid especially over 4000rpm when both engines are fully on the case !

  • @filippxx
    @filippxx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Being the first generation, the battery will be expensive to replace as it was with the First gen Prius. Still, you need a first at some point. Now on the third generation Prius you replace only modules of the battery which are failing, at a cost of a few hundred euros per module. The GTE Golf is an impressive car, considering it's the first plug in hybrid which for VW is mass produced in their existing plants. Keep in mind that the Prius for example is made only in Japan, Auris only in UK, etc.

    Heyy, i have a question! Is vw considered premium in Germany?? Or just for folks..? c:

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is indeed a very good question. In general, Volkswagen is known for offering very very good quality, not cheap but also not as expensive as the premium brands. That's why they are the most selling brand in Germany, and of course due to the heritage and the many many dealers they have throughout the country. In recent years, Volkswagen is more and more moving towards the premium segment, as we can also see in our reviews. Sometimes, you dont see any difference to Audi look-and-feel and we will show you soon that with the all-new Passat, they will even attack Mercedes. So I think, that Seat and Skoda will be the "Volks" vehicles and that VW is moving up. Where are you from and what do you think about it?

    only 395km combined? and i see a full petrol tank?? i guess thats not correct is it. what the range on the petrol tank when not using the plugin and what is it when your using it ( factory energy use )

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leon G Not sure if that was the range, at which minute/second did you see it? The combined range of both electric and petrol is 940 km.

    • @ELGee1
      @ELGee1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      13.57 and 15.57 first range on touchscreen 2e fuel gauge almost full

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leon G I see. Well observed! That's ideed very strange, didnt noticed that while driving. I will have to check on that, this small petrol range is very unrealistic. I will have to do research on that.

    • @ELGee1
      @ELGee1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      To sporty driving during the test ? Or tester before you?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leon G Hey, I now talked to Volkswagen about it and we concluded, that it should be this scenario: We didnt drive the petrol engine for a long time, mostly used the electric engine. So the range for the petrol engine must have been calculated by the tester before us, probably someone just fueled the car and drove up the hill to hand it over to us. Volkswagen is sure the range will rise while driving when you are driving longer as the computer obviously very fastly changes its presumption of the range.

    • @Indemere
      @Indemere 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hasan Murat Sarikaya An electric engine does not need a transmission, it has maximum torque at 1 rpm and will just increase the rpm. An electric engine can rotate at *000 rpm without a problem. There is no limitation like a petrol engine. But the electric part is limited to a certain speed this is for energy consumption reasons I think. Correct me if I'm wrong :)

    SO close to ordering one... whats holding me back?..I'll tell you: the VW groups trouble with the 1.4 TSi engine.. the timing chain snaps like plastic and the motor is ruined...
    I'm hoping they will go back to timing belt instead.. At the moment they kind of pay for most repairs, but not always.. even though it's a known construction f***up.
    Maybe I can buy an extra 2-3 years of warranty.. the standard 2 years are a joke!.. and then just sell it after 4-5 years again.. hopefully without engine trouble.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HR2635 Interesting point, where you got the info from?

    • @HR2635
      @HR2635 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Several VW resellers/mechanics.. also a few select used cars salesmen that I know and respect. The 1.2 and 1.4 is currently in Denmark covered by "Kulanz" I think the word is :-)
      The 1.8 and 2.0 is under observation.. currently VW mostly pay for it if the chain starts making noise, to prevent breakdown of the engine.. but not always. It's a big issue here (DK) where cars cost 2-3 times what they cost in DE :-(.. big sigh..
      BUT they do also tell me that for the last 1-1½ year the occurrences of timing chain failures have been decreasing a lot. So MAYBE they have fixed the problem.
      BTW: The DSG7 is also getting better.. no serious complaints for the last 1-1½ years. But the DSG6 needs new transmission oil for every 60.000 km if you want it to keep working (again: used cars salesmen know this.. cause in Denmark they must give 6 months warranty on any car.. and they see this all the time. Mostly on older (4years+) cars, but also on 1-2 years old cars with only 30-40k km on the clock.
      Again: I am very interested in the GTE... so I might take the chance.. but I still feel like I'm using a slot machine in Vegas.. will it last? Are there any long term tests on all the cars electronics from real life scnearios (cold winters, hot summers, mountain drives )?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HR2635 yeah Kulanz :) Very interesting. That's really a shame! Quite often that the too small turbo engines fail :/ About winter etc., the batteries drain power then so the range is kinda split in half

      TechExplorer Hey Joe, we couldnt really make a representable test to that yet. The official milage figures are kinda fake, because they first take the full electric range into account and then of whats leftover the petrol engine. So these figures are no real use for every day driving.

    excellent review, but I would just have one worry about a car with batteries, batteries will degrade with time for sure, like all stuff electronic today, even the most hi-end batteries wont last very long, and the range in e mode is only about 30km in natural human driving fashion. so looking into future, knowing the battery price, it might be a problem, although it does seem a perfect balance now.

    • @rolandrohde
      @rolandrohde 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bratic80
      True. However, VW gives you 8 Years or 160000km guarantee on the battery, so that's not so bad. And in 8 Years the batteries will surely be cheaper... ;)
      You might even be really lucky and get a better (larger capacity) battery for the Golf n the future, but that's probably not going to happen...it did happen with e-bikes though...

    • @thecat4272
      @thecat4272 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Roland Rohde Replacement batteries will be very expensive. Even buying an official replacement battery on my laptop costs £80 and the ones in this car are designed to pull 1300kg!! I think this car would be great used buy at 3 years old but probably not at 10 years+.

    • @hannesorisson1200
      @hannesorisson1200 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it has similar batteries as other battery cars like the Nissan Leaf they will not exchange the whole battery. There are hundreds if not thousands of cells that degrade and the will change out those cells. There is almost no exchange of the whole battery. Or so I have been told by Nissan and Kia.

    It seems to me that you don't understand the engeenerging bit of the car so you make some quite funny remarks, the cars main power source or the thing that tourns the wheels is the electic motor which is combined with a generator unit, the petrol engine only serves to turn the generator and does not actually turn the wheels as it is the case in a conventional petrol powered car,and that makes for a fantastic fuel economy, the electric mode is there only as a convieniance and this kind of car is not designed so that that is its primary mode of propulsion , so please take that in consideration and dont put confusing remarks out in the world... first learn your facts or have someone explain them to you...By the way you do a great job on the design,use and eastethics part of the review, that is your strong side...Greetings !

    • @autogefuehl

      Mladen Milić What exactly do you mean? There is also a quick charger available

    • @Mladjasmilic
      @Mladjasmilic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my garage I have 3 phase socket which can suply 16A , which is in total 11kW . Europeian charging connector has 5 big holes (power) and 2 small (data) , 5 big have one for ground , and other 4 can be configured to be single phase , 3 phase or DC using double holes ; but VW has only middle row used (whatch closer into plug under VW badge , only middle row has shining metal inside) . So only power this connector can handle on gte is 230V 16A AC or 350V 20A DC . That is like having best PC in the world and than put 1 usb on it .

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mladen Milić Very interesting. I am not sure but that might have something todo with what you can get as power input here.

    • @Mladjasmilic
      @Mladjasmilic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The connector was created to be used in many places and situations . That is why it has 5 power pins . For example in US you can only have 1 phase current , but up to 50A , so you double the pins (2 for live wire , 2 for neutral) , or double for DC (2 for positive , 2 for negative) , or use all 5 (1 neutral , 3 phases + ground) . In my house I have 3 phase sockets , for thing like thermo-acumulating heater , cooker , central heating and in garage for welding machine . I believe that in German countriside 3 phase is common . So , car should support all pins from connector , to to downgrade connector te be single phase only .

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mladen Milić It's a bit crazy with direct current and alternating current. Afaik power plants produce alternating current, and the grid was formerly on direct current, with huge cables and a lot of power loss. Then they changed to alternating current on the grid to make the cables thinner and reduce the power loss. All electric household stuff runs on direct current, that's why you have to use power supplies to transfer the alternating in the direct current. And as far as I understood, the electric vehicles do as well run on direct current, but get alternating current from the grid - that's why it takes ages to load at home. Among the charging stations in Germany, there are only some with direct current - most of them run on alternating. The new ones are called CCS they can put direct and alternating on. Complicated stuff, though ;)
