This episode has been posted by others. The first time I watched this one of the comments was by the daughter of the dectectorist who found the gold coin. One of the best episodes of many great ones.
I actually shouted "holy $#!@" when I saw the size of that coin. Lol. Absolutely incredible. You could have a group of 100 detectorists who have all been metal detecting for 60 years each, with none of them ever finding a gold coin of that size.
Isn’t hard to “find” a coin when it’s a clear and obvious plant for viewer ratings... nobody else seems to notice how suspiciously clean and preserved it is for having supposedly been picked out of a pile of dirt that was disturbed fir the first time in a couple thousand years... also you don’t see it get “discovered” all you see is some guy (odds are an actor since most of the people on this show who do any talking or commentating (like tony) are lifelong paid actors) holding it in his hand which is “shaking from excitement” which isn’t hard too fake because anyone can shake their hand
They do turn up occasionally but you are right in that only a small percentage of detectorists will ever find one. I have found 16 hammered silver and copper coins and jettons; discovering those has given me great pleasure. If I never find a noble I won't die a disappointed man but of course, we all want one!
Wow what a great dig Now that brought me back in time Fantastic. With the draw bridge and a great hall just incredible. And best of all is the gold coin.
Gold's ability to survive in the soil is remarkable. I've been lucky enough to find three gold objects detecting, and they've all been in amazing condition.
i love this show, and i've only just discovered it this week. in America, we don't have so many old ruins like this dotted everywhere- it's only in Europe and the Middle East that you can see this.
There's so much going on here, my ADHD is off the charts. Literally had to watch this episode in two sittings because I was getting so anxious at how much was going on with all the multiple permutations of this castle. When the gold coin showed up I was like "right. Time for an extra adderall dose!"
I infer from the discussion that the coal mining was at least decades ago and the landscape suggests more likely a century. Coal was the power driving the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution. It was functionally more valuable than gold. Thus, coal was king; very much alive versus old dead ones. Such attitudes are the norm in human society and history. Probably for the first time in human history we have the luxury of taking the time to both look back and preserve what remnants remain. Programs like this, rare as they are, are all the more engaging for it.

I learned something from watching this today, and that was what 'wainscotting' is. Its a word/term that has puzzled me since childhood, when I encountered it in a book about various mysterious things. As well as introducing me to such things as the Cottingley fairies and the Flying Dutchman, it also had a section on apparitions, including an anecdote about a strange cylindrical blue- white object that seized hold of a woman whilst she, her husband and an unspecified number of companions were sat at dinner. Naturally the husband leapt to his wife's defense, snatching up a chair and lashing out at the mysterious thing, only to have the chair pass right through and strike the 'wainscotting' behind. For forty odd years, I'd assumed this odd word was simply an old synonym for skirting boards: this taught me that it's a system of full-wall wood panelling, and makes a great deal more sense of that very strange tale!
Here in the South of the US, we use a lot of wainscotting. Even the term is normal here. I had a friend from up North that had no idea what I was talking about so it must not be as common as I would have thought.

I adore how Time Team is packed with archeological content from the first minute! Time Team's cinemagraphic secret is the journey it takes us on. Time Team's charm is the passion and personalities of the people involved. Time Team is archeological documentary done right!
4 sentences, all using ‘time team’. Fascinating.
I love Time Team! Every time I watch it, I remember friends of mine who were doing postgraduate work in the 1960s at Birmingham University, Edgbaston with a group of others, one of whom was Mick Aston! He hasn't changed (much)
I just discovered this page and I love it. Especially since my mothers desindence came from England. I'm told we came over on the Mayflower. Honestly if I was a queen or royalty, I'd hide my wealth in a moat or a tomb under my castle. No one would ever know except a few trusted people.
And who are you claiming as your mayflower ancestor...miss imagination.
Very unlikely your ancestors were on the Mayflower
My daughters are descendants of both the de Grey and la Zouche families. Seeing where they lived is fantastic.
Same..
Being an old Oregonian from the USA, I started watching TT during the first COVID shutdown. I have now seen all the shows available on TH-cam. I really do think I missed a really good time with my family waiting and watching every Sunday night like I had in the early 1960's with Mutual of Omahas wild kingdom, follow by Walt Disney's show.
Oh well
Marlin Perkins
It's called time team not tt
Helen smiles and the Sun suddenly breaks through the English clouds.
Loved this program watching it with my dad. Such a shame it got cancelled.
It is now back on TH-cam, crowd sourced episodes. Had some new people and new hosts, but Tony has come back recently.
My rabbit dug up an 1886, 3 pence a few years ago, i was buzzing for days, I can only imagine what this guy was feeling. Well done fella
This episode has been posted by others. The first time I watched this one of the comments was by the daughter of the dectectorist who found the gold coin. One of the best episodes of many great ones.
I'm sure someone was angry about losing that coin! It's beautiful, wow what a find.
That Coin is Stunningly Beautiful. Amazing Find
I wished they had longer than 3 days! Dig it all up! I want to see it all! Lol
What a find that gold coin is.
I actually shouted "holy $#!@" when I saw the size of that coin. Lol. Absolutely incredible. You could have a group of 100 detectorists who have all been metal detecting for 60 years each, with none of them ever finding a gold coin of that size.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been losing sleep wondering how you reacted.
@@Invictus13666 likely the same amount of sleep that I've lost while waiting for you to finally tell me how you feel about my reaction and comment.
@@richardgrace4500 the coin wasn't in the ground for a couple of thousand years, it was from the 13th century. And gold is bloody easy to clean up.
I love TT! Wouldn't it be great to sit down with that crew, have a pint and just listen to the stories!
The enthusiasm is palpable . That combined with the wonderful British history and accents makes this HIGHLY enjoyable to watch !! Magnificent!!
A very interesting episode.
One find after another.
With a gold coin on top.
Not only do i like this show, it is singlehandedly saving my algorithm.
Wow what a great dig Now that brought me back in time Fantastic. With the draw bridge and a great hall just incredible. And best of all is the gold coin.
that gold coin is in AMAZING condition, and its so thin, its hard to believe it didnt get bent when the excavator dug it out.
That’s not even remotely true... you haven’t travelled much in the United States at all have you
@@richardgrace4500 No she's correct. The population dispersal is much greater. The archaeology is much more limited.
Asia and Africa as well lots of places with ruins all over.
Lots of Native American archeology...but Americans are too racist to investigate.
Great dig and finds. You explained it very nicely.
Well done. It's a wondrous thing to discover what you were not really looking for.
Great episode! good to see the constructional history of something going back so far brought to light.
I am a descendant of the Skipwith and The Dales and to see history alive like this it's amazing because it states when my ancestors was alive
Hi there, relative! Diana and Edward, yes?
All of our ancestors were alive at this time
That gold coin is so beautiful, even if it wasn't gold it's still amazing
This was a great episode!!! Amazing finds! And amazing detective work!
There's so much going on here, my ADHD is off the charts. Literally had to watch this episode in two sittings because I was getting so anxious at how much was going on with all the multiple permutations of this castle. When the gold coin showed up I was like "right. Time for an extra adderall dose!"
Lol I'm not British but I love these shows! The whole team seems to be so dedicated and overjoyed with the work. Thanks
@@Kaptain13Gonzo twaddle.
love love this show! i was just as excited about that gold coin! I wanted to pop into the old moat and start digging.
Even without the gold coin find, this is one of the best episodes in my opinion
The Zouche family are in my family tree. When I heard the name it surprised me! Nice to know where I got my bad money management from. 😆
Many people have commented on what a wonderful person Raksha seems to be. She' a darling - personable, witty, and obviously smart..
I agree, she's a sweetie! I've had a crush on Faye ever since she came to Time Team. They both are beautiful, intelligent, and very hard workers. It doesn't get much better than that!
@@davidwdorr6636 way to hijack a comment to talk about the dumbass blonde girl the producers tried so hard to make one of the main characters-but she was so incompetent she couldn’t manage even that.
Raksha Davy will not be appearing in the new series, her new position does not allow her to go on these digs, she is now President of Archeology Society.
Great episode , just had a feeling that I've seen this before. Still worth watching. Thks
it was first broadcast in 2008.
@@cherub2918 Thks. Helps me believe that my memory is not totally ga..ga. lol
Never watched an episode I wouldn’t watch again!
Great episode, great story and Great gold coin find:) TFS, GB :)
My favourite guy is Phil
Harding and Tony Robinson and Brigid 👍😎
Very entertaing ! All the cast are impressive and so knowledgeable ! I will look for more.
It's such good news that this show is coming back. I know that it won't be the same and I hope they do It proper justice. From what I can tell it will have some of the original cast including Phil woo hoo.
No Phil. Settle down. Stop being ignorant.
absolute classic episode GOLD IN THE MOAT!
The best episode I've seen yet! Thanks to all and definitely more Time Team please, please!
Love the series. Ainsworth is the man. Almost always spot on. Can't help noticing that all the female grad students dress the same way.
Wow, what a find! Henry the V is a hero of mine. Amazing.
Tonys a Real Trooper .... Climbing through all of these torn up places Whilst Pregnant ..
🤣🤣😂
He's showing more than Helen!
Wow! Even I'm excited! Yet it's a year later and I'm several time zones away in California.
Baldrick measuring 9 metres with his little legs 😂
A schot is a wall-like structure in Dutch, a board perhaps. Divider.
Here in the South of the US, we use a lot of wainscotting. Even the term is normal here. I had a friend from up North that had no idea what I was talking about so it must not be as common as I would have thought.
@@Sweetyhide
Well, yankees, sheesh.
@@Sweetyhide im from Illinois and can say wainscoting is very normal and still quite popular here.
So you managed to live to the age of 65ish (based on picture) without bothering to...read a book? Disgustingly ignorant.
This show is so wholesome
I love how much actual fun Phil has when he's digging.
Everyone has fun digging. Archaeology isn’t like garbage collection
@@Invictus13666 - Never said it was. Chill. Dig.
@@davidwilliambarker you kinda did actually.
@@Invictus13666 = Nope. Prove it.
@@davidwilliambarker sure. Later, when I’m bored, I’ll explain to you how words have meanings.
Big up Time Team for bringing the past to life. I often think how our past is hidden from us.
