- Tony Robinson and the Team descend on the grounds of a superb medieval manor house in Somerset to investigate a supposed Roman Villa lying in a boggy area at the bottom of the garden.
First discovered in 1883, experts are now concerned that maybe it isn't a villa at all... perhaps it isn't even Roman.
Draining and clearing the swamp is hard work. Walls, floors and even mosaics are good clues - but are certainly not everything they seem to be. Only near the end of three days' intensive detective work can the team unravel the truth.
Phil gives his in-depth scientific archaeological appraisal of the dig.. "it is absolutely a cracking site, Tony"

I am happy that we have done a lot of good archeology as well... found viking burials in Saaremaa, and some more (ships and etc).
P.S. i actually learn from those tv clips a lot about history of Estonia (cause i was watching and thinking with dates). And i have learned, how should be your approuch to ruins! Those people have done a really good work!!! Thank you!

I think this was a nymphaeum, not a bath house. That could explain in its isolation.

@@Invictus13666 it was hardly identified as a bath house. I have yet to see a single mention of a nymphaeum in all of Time Team. That tells me that it was not in their lexicon. You can’t identify something of which you have no concept. It’s very likely a nymphaeum.

hang on, if a site has been dug before those trenches dont count as new archaeology, so they could add 10% plus redigging the old trenches
nope .... if they choose to dig the old trenches they are just aligning themselves with the old works ... but if they tag a bit of the old trench and dig new they get location and context at the same time
Actually they commonly comment on how if a modern dig has been done before then they can uncover that trench without taking any square footage from the specified cap. On this site, I believe, it was dug over 100 years prior and doesn’t count as previous work.

Why are only 3 days given to a search? Seems like you must go at warp speed to find what you do find. Dont you find this rather irritating? Just curious.
Because it focuses the team, and it’s how much time they could spend away from work. It started because professor hypocrite decided he could learn all the landscape archaeology of a town in an afternoon.

Would the hypocaust system be a good way to heat houses today?
I work in the plumbing dept at a major diy store and what we sell is called radiant heating. it costs a bit to start off with but, over time, it is sooo much more cheaper to use, warms better and is such a help to traditional furnaces...
While this is true, it does take a little while to heat up, but after that it heats wonderfully!
Yes, it can. The Koreans used a very similar system and while modern apartments usually have normal underfloor heating, some people in detached houses (Usually built in a traditional style) still opt for an Ondol (similar to the "experimental archaeology in this episode.) If you want to check out one of these houses, look up, "Houses that Breathe, Hanok [The Wonders of Korea 2 / 2016.10.21]" on TH-cam.
Hydronic underfloor heating. I have an extremely simple system that was built with the house in the 70's. It is wonderful!
No it is a very inefficient way unless you already have a heat source for some other purpose. The problem is heat loss to the environment and stone set into the earth. These days we can insulate better and manage humidity so much better than these old days.
Unfortunately, no kudos given to the beautiful young archeologist who rediscovered it.

Why are these experts referring to pottery bits as "sherds"? When I went to school, the term was "shards"......
When I first started watching TT several years ago I thought the same thing. It bothered me enough to look it up. The precise term for a fragment of pottery found on an archaeological site is a "potsherd", frequently shortened to "sherd".
Also depends where your from, in the US it's shards, UK is sherds.

It was partially unearthed to begin with, and the walls were visible already. In the beginning Phil discovers walls as they are just clearing the plants away.

Ian was average. Go find a local excavation company. You’ll find operators there capable of doing things that pansy would never contemplate.

It would be interesting, to me anyway, to know what happens to these sites when TimeTeam's three days are completed. I realize many are plotted and covered back up, but a rare find like this seems like it should be cleaned up and displayed. Possibly it was, but I have no clue. Anyone?
+KYIRISH1 All the information gleaned is carefully recorded on put on file for other archaeologists to look at and use in the future. One of the problems is there are so many sites that need more work and not enough funding to go round.
+KYIRISH1 The information gathered during the making of these shows is held by an organisation called Wessex Archaeology. They have offices around the UK and work closely with County, and Regional Archaeology Societies and academic bodies. Some of the "digs" featured in Time Team go on for many years.
I hope they diverted that stream to protect the area from erosion.

Phil doesn't find sh*t. The volunteers, students, and PhD candidates do all the work. When they find anything Phil comes over and takes all the credit. That's the way academia works.

My experience is that's how life works, not just academia.
It is TV; have you never watched TV before? It is a construct to enable narrative flow. Also, Phil is not a professional academic (he is a professional archaeologist; and a good one). Finally, I am guessing you have some chips on shoulders there mate; as an academic myself, I work harder to help my students than I do on my own career...

Once I have a solution to a problem I really am not that excited about writing it up...BUT my students need to publish to get their career off the ground, so that motivates me . . . If you don't believe that this is common, I guess you know few mathematicians...for many of us, once we have told our peers about our work (seminars etc) we are happy...publish or perish is an anathema to a lot of us...
