Believe it or not that hummingbird will recognize you the rest of its life.
I’ve been feeding the birds for years now the adults bring their babies to my feeders .
They demonstrate no fear of me close up.
I rescued a hummingbird from a spider web it returned to my face to thank me .
Thanks for feeding the bird back to health .

Apparently birds' brain structure is quite dense and efficient. Hence you have some, like crows, that can be very intelligent. Certainly I'd expect birds to have some memory of "good" and "bad" things like foods or animals or people they encounter as part of their survival mechanisms. But what I've read about crows and related (corvids) is quite amazing, in terms of memory and problem solving skills.

I read once that humming birds have an incredibly fine balance to maintain their energy. They have to drink almost all day to survive. You definitely saved its life.

They do have a weird natural defense for when they don't have access to food! Their body goes into an almost stasis mode from what I heard. Still probably saved it since it was stuck in the garage though.

Ennhhh, Yes'n'No? Hummingbird (and there are a beautiful varieties of them!) have an INSANE metabolic rate. They need make a frequent but not constant intake value.
What's amazing is some the things they do!
When active, their hearts beat, if I recall correctly... Something, like... 200-600 times a minute? But, during sleep, their metabolism and heartrate drop shockingly.
Additionally, there is a species of humming bird, that travels between North and South Americas. Flying over the OCEAN to achieve this!

  • @docmason9677
    @docmason9677 ปีที่แล้ว +23

The humming bird was starving to death. They Eat A lot. Hummingbirds have a very high metabolism and must eat all day long just to survive. They consume about half their body weight in bugs and nectar, feeding every 10-15 minutes and visiting 1,000-2,000 flowers throughout the day.
I love and have pet birds. I have African Finches about the same size and God Bless you for your efforts and patience and for saving it's life.

I did something as a child.. maybe 8 or 9.. we had an above ground swimming pool, and there were usually a few drowned bugs floating that you had to scoop out before you went swimming.. One day, there was about a dozen black and yellow bees.. not sure what kind.. I thought they would be great for school.. I got a piece of cardboard and covered it with tin foil.. then took each bee and lined them up by size.. Then I got some straight pins from my mom's sewing stuff.. and I stuck pin through the smallest bee and then into the cardboard.. so the bee was suspended about half an inch above the foil.. I had a couple rows of bees and was proud of my project.. I left it outside on the picnic table.. when my mom got home, I went out to get it, to show her, and to my horror, half the bees were alive and buzzing, wings vibrating, legs moving.. I was stunned, sickened, almost.. and I couldn't believe I was responsible .. I honestly don't remember what I did next, but to this day I cant even touch a dead or dying creature

For anyone who finds a hummingbird like this. The recipe is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. First boil the water, remember to account for evaporation. After boiling the water, shut off the flame and mix the sugar. Stir well so all the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar dissolves let the water cool and reach room temp. Once cooled you can let the hummingbird have it. If you have a syringe like this person did that works. Just brace it against something so it's more stable. You don't need to put the birds entire beck in the tip. Just bring it close, it's tongue can do the rest.

I saved a hummingbird that couldn't fly and was trapped in the limestone dust of a parking lot. I captured him with my bare hands and took him home and nursed him for four hours then when he could fly, I released him. As he flew away I told him to visit soon. The next year and for the following 12 years, we have had swarms of hummers to the point that one feeder wasn't enough. We put up the "race track", seven feeders that wrapped around our tiny house and love every one that visits.
I was born able to relate to wild animals. My first saved wild creature was a white duck from a pond where my father was buried. I was four. I am almost sixty now and am unable to continue due to health issues but every day I think about the animals I saved, the ones I lost and the inspiration to others to do the selfless act of caring for what can't take care of itself. Blessings.

Brought back a fond memory. Saved his life 💫 I almost stepped on a little baby hummingbird that had fallen from the nest when I was about 18 in in 1980ish. He was going to die. I scooped him up and took him home to figure things out. I loved animals and had many pets growing up but to nurse up a baby hummingbird…once in a life time opportunity. No internet back then so I had to make a soft little nest in a shoebox and used a light bulb for heat. I mixed up some honey and I think wheat germ thinned down with water. Using an eye dropper I fed him every few hours ( middle of night he would make noise when hungry ) I had him for about a month. .. until it was time to let him test his wings. I let him try in our living room and had crash pillows everywhere. Finally he looked strong enough to go outside and fly with his buddies. He sat on my finger just like this lhummingbird in video. He didn’t want to leave. Then ‘poof’ he took off…only to circle back and hover in front of my father and I then take off. I have 110mm photos my mom took somewhere in the house but wish I had better pics. But I have the great memories of my little ‘pet’ hummingbird I saved. This video 45 years later made my night 06/19/24 💫 blessings and much love

That's wonderful! I had a hummingbird fly into our house through the window and when he tried to leave, he hit the window hard and knocked himself out. Poor thing. I picked him up and held him until he came to. When he woke up, he was so scared. Took him out and let him fly. Most amazing thing ever to hold that beautiful little guy and then see him fly off, ok and able to live his life. I'll never forget it. Happened in 1985 right after I was married.

When her feeder needs more nectar, she flutters in place at the window for me to see her tell me this. She amazes me! I doubt I am the only human she has trained in this fashion! She is very territorial too! She will not let any other hummingbirds near 'her' feeder. I buy her a nice, new one every year with the features she seems to like the most, like perches. She actually likes to sit on a perch instead of flying in place to eat. I love her! I look forward to seeing her every spring.

Hummingbirds are such feisty little critters. It's really, really sad to see one at the very end of its tether - a hummingbird this still is on the edge of death. He was completely, totally exhausted (and badly dehydrated to boot). Very young one too - he was a juvie male, probably not long post-fledging.
You did a truly good thing here. One never knows what ripples may pass outward from what seems, on the surface, like a small act of decency. And the little birb recognized it! He wanted to be on your arm because he felt safe there, until his batteries were fully recharged and he was ready to move on.
Good. For. You. There's a special kind of grace in helping a powerless animal like you did. I wouldn't at all be surprised if you see this little guy again. Put up a hummingbird feeder, and you may end up with a new family of them!

This honestly made me light up seeing the recovery. You did a pretty big thing for that little guy (or gal). The things that really hits me though, is how the hummingbird actually flew to you, how it let you pick it up, and how it even sat on your arm and knuckles like a perch. Birds don't do that kind of thing unless they REALLY trust you. Birds won't perch in areas they feel unsafe in or don't trust. But you really had this little dude's heart and trust. That's simply amazing. Good job Will. This seriously made me proud.

I won a bird's trust once. It had been taken off the feeder by a magpie that started trying to eat its little head. I chased off the magpie and stuck around the little guy for a while until I could see that it was still alive, but I didn't try to touch it. I didn't want to scare it worse. After a while, it sort of collected itself, took a few deep breaths, and flew off, but after that, in the whole flock of birds that looked just like it, there was one that would stay on the feeder when I came outside. Didn't even care how hard the door closed. It just sat there on the feeder, watching me, and it had a little shock of feathers sticking up on the back of its head, right where the magpie had attacked. I named it Twitter, both for its chirps and for how social it seemed to be, and it always came back every summer.
Statistically I know that my last summer there, when it didn't come, it had probably died. They don't live that long. But a corner of my heart insists that if I go back to that house, I'll see Twitter sitting on the feeder watching me.

Then I turned back as it was certain to be stepped on being so tiny. Took the tiny little bird to my office and placed it in a coffee cup. Fed it sugar water through a straw. Closed the lid but left the lid open. Fed it more sugar water for a few hours. By lunchtime the bird was flapping away inside the coffee cup. At lunch time I took the bird I. Cup to Bryant park. Removed the lid. It looked around. Flapped it’s wings for a time. Then I tilted the cup and it flew into the trees. I felt great! 👍🏾👍

Humming birds go into torpor at night or during times without a food source in order to conserve energy. The temperature of the hummingbird falls to match the temperature of the outdoors. Also the humming bird's heart rate drops to ~100 bpm (from a resting heart rate of over 1000 bpm during the daytime). Good thing you gave this guy some food... he was doing everything he could to save energy.

I went out early one morning to check my feeders when I noticed a female ruby throat hanging upside down on the perch. I looked at it and it appeared to be dead . It had spider silk around its claws and one foot was locked shut . I carefully removed the silk and held the bird in my palm , it’s eyes were closed but soon opened and all at once it began to move its wings in slow motion, then a bit faster then all at once its afterburners kicked in and it flew away.true story but of course it had no afterburners but other birds don’t know that

On a more serious note, it is very clear you found him just a short time before he would have been lost altogether based on his being unable to fly, flailing about,, barely able eat and ignoring his instinct to fly away because of fear. You were a hero that day and because of that, your child learned how precious all life really is. Blessings! 🤗

I found a mantis in a spiderweb in my house once, there was no longer a spider in the web but the mantis was totally stuck so I grab it out the web and took it outside and set it on the fence post but it jumped back on my arm, I then learned mantids can show gratitude with a facial expression which was cute to see from one of nature's more perfect killing machines.

Similar story here, but the mantis was tiny and obviously a baby stuck in some trash, so I took it out, and eventually it just started walking on me and not freaking out. When I tried to let it go, it touched the bush and backed up onto my arm again, but it eventually left. A few days later or so, there was a full grown Mantis in our garage and actually crawled onto my arm without panic, so I like to think it was the same praying mantis.

i had one fly into my window.
think he had a hurt wing - would try to fly, but couldn't.
bought him nectar and bugs and such, he ate a bit and drank a lot.
built him a safe little nest of cloth in a cozy box.
he loved to perch on fingers and be rubbed on the back neck with a pinky.
wasn't afraid of people at all. my whole family fell in love with him.
we kept him for 3 days and saw massive improvement.
by day 3 he flew off healthy and happy.
miss you, little buddy. hope you're staying warm and safe.

And when it was time to release hummingbird, he flew onto me and hung out on my hand for a few minutes then flew off and came back and returned to my hands.
