After renting a Beretta 92 at my range, I honestly started to prefer DA/SA over striker fired from how safe the first trigger pull feels. If you're carrying it around, you can almost guarantee your Beretta won't go off when you don't want it to, which is a good thing when guns should be a last resort for self defense scenarios.

    • @CompetitionChris

I get that and I do love the way the double action feels but I've been carrying a striker fired pistol for years and it's never just went off. Even dropping it from 4 ft up in the air outside of it's holster.

    • @danielhenderson8316

For me, it's hammer vs striker. Unless it's a beater, the feel of a hammer fired trigger always felt better than a staple gun feeling striker.

This is one of the reasons why I like the Beretta PX4 Subcompact. I get a safety (which can be changed to a decocker only) and a DA/SA, and with its stainless steel bull barrel, it looks tough when you look at the muzzle.

If you ever buy a 92, put the Beretta “D” hammer spring in it. It will lighten up the double action pull by 2-3lbs but still reliably set off any primers. It’s a cheap upgrade, easy to do yourself. Knock out one pin, easy access.

An excellent review as always. In the 90s the 92 was issued as my LE duty weapon. I went to a 3 day course on the weapon. One of the range drills was to field strip the weapon and drop the parts into a sand pile then run 100 yards. After the run the requirement was to retrieve the parts from the sand pile, reassemble the weapon without cleaning and insert a full mag and run a shooting drill. The weapon never failed.

To add on to jacobs point, they had the same slide failures on the P226s they adopted for the same reason. Chris Bartocci from Small Arms Solutions has a comprehensive video on the M9 program and the teething issues it had.

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 ปีที่แล้ว +25

There had been two different issues.
That on the Army M9, that happened exclusively in endurance tests performed right after the adoption of the gun, was caused by a batch of Winchester made ammos that developed pressures in excess of proofloads. In those conditions it was a miracle the slides actually endured several thousands rounds (over 7.000 on average) before cracking. After Beretta technicians discovered the real issue (the Army technicians first blamed the tellurium used in the alloy) Beretta sued the Government for the delays, bad press and unnecessary modifications requested to the guns. The lawsuit had been settled off-court with the Government paying Beretta further 10 millions $.
It's not clear if those ammos had ben used in the XM9 trials but, as a matter of fact, in those trials, only two models, the Beretta M9 and the H&K P7, reached the treshold of 7000 rounds fired for the endurance tests with all the 3 guns sitll intact. All the others cracked the slide or the frame of at least one gun.
The other incidents happened to two Beretta 92SB used by the SEALs. In one case, the SEALs couldn't say how many rounds the gun fired, but they were surely over 30.000 (an unreasonable high number in the '80s. The XM9 program, IE, called for a service life "not inferior to 5.000 rounds"). In the other, the SEAL was testing handloads he made for his SMG, so none could say what pressure was developed.

Beretta 92 accuracy. In the mid-80s I was qualifying German paratroopers on the M-16. While waiting for a new firing order to come up I took out my personal 92FS I fired at one of the pop-up targets and knocked it down, at 150m. I did it several more times and passed the pistol off to the German NCOs to try. After several rounds they were doing this too. We were still knocking down targets all the way back to 250m. Of course, we weren't moving and no one was shooting back.

I remember getting issued my first m9 as a medic. Loved it then and still love it today. Yes, it’s a big gun, yes, people with small hands struggle with it. However, in the right hands that is one smooth accurate firearm. As for reliability it gets tiresome hearing people say that about the Beretta, it’s anything but unreliable. Most people that experienced issues were either due to the crappy cheap mags issued to them instead of the factory issued beretta mags, or lazy armorers who never performed the necessary spring maintenance on the gun. I would trust that gun with my life and the life of my family without hesitation. Oh and the safety, it’s all about training and muscle memory. I’ve never had any issues with accidentally engaging the safety. Train with the gun enough, understand your manual of arms and be situationally aware.

Such a secondary cool factor, but it's also been very reliable and I have no doubt that God forbid I ever have to use it, it shall not fail. In the looks department, I bet you would put Beretta 92 is in the top 10 for sure. Probably even top 5. I do agree that the open top design allows for more debris to get in the gun, but these guns were meant to be carried in a holster, which minimizes that concern. I have a 92x RDO and it appears that they solved the safety issue just like the the M9A4. You can also convert a older 92 to a G model if your concerned about the safety.

    • @spookinoff
      @spookinoff ปีที่แล้ว +6

Plus the open top slide has advantages. It reduces weight without making the gun too light, and it greatly lessens the possibility of having an FTE. There's no place for the case to get hung up. Add to that the "direct feed" system whereby the top round in the mag is always directly lined up with the chamber. No need for a tilting barrel or feed ramp and it will still feed 100% reliably. And you're right, they're damn sexy!

It's also just an extremely famous pistol having been in so many movies and TV shows, not to mention its long run as the US military standard service pistol. It has its quirks just like all other guns do. Though it is not my favorite pistol, I do own a number of different 92/M9 models and don't feel at a disadvantage whenever I fill my hand with one. All of mine say "Made in Italy" on them except my M9-A4. I believe an Italian pistol should have these words on it.

We trained a fair amount but not enough to remain as familiar and proficient with it as I would have liked. The solution for me was to purchase the civilian version, the 92 FS. I was then able to train with it much more so than I ever could have by merely going to the Range a couple of times a year with my unit. Just got the 92fs a couple months ago. After shooting striker fired polymer framed pistols for so long, its such a refreshing feel. Most accurate pistols ive used before. After renting one, i just had to trade my g26 in for one. Sure, it had a bit of a chunky grip for my smaller hands but the smooth recoil and DA/SA make it my favorite pistol I’ve ever shot. Plus the beautiful looks are a plus lol. Plan on putting G10 grips on mine soon enough. Might even get the compact version eventually for carrying

It made me go back and examine how i use the gun to try and determine why, and it really comes down to big hands and long fingers...I operate the slide with the serrations in an overhand clamp and never once activated the safety. the grip is also comfortable and the trigger works. although that first shot transition is still sketchy even after all these years.

The primary thing I hate about the Beretta 92/M9 is the slide mounted safety. Yes the newer ones come with the safety slightly angled up to make accidentally engaging the safety much more difficult when racking the slide, but even with training it could happen under stress (especially if you rack the slide with your hands over the top instead of slingshotting it). I wished Beretta would make these all come with the G/decocker only model or come with a frame mounted safety. The original design from way back in the day with the frame mounted safety (aside from the heel mag release button) was perfect in my opinion. Even the higher end 92X Performance or 92X Performance Defensive with the frame mounted safety is so much better (and gives you the option of carrying cocked and locked if you don't want the first trigger pull to be double action).
I really hope Beretta releases the frame mounted version for the standard Beretta 92 instead of just the high end ones.

Love the Beretta. Definitely agree the safety location isn't ideal, but I've trained to the point where I can sweep it off with my thumb right out of the holster before even presenting the gun towards the target. I did flip the safety on accidentally once when I was qualifying with the M9 and I didn't realize the trigger would actually travel with the safety activated, so I didn't realize immediately what was going on and tried to clear a malfunction, then the range officer told me the safety was on lol. My ruger trigger is stiffer and doesn't travel as far when the safety is on so it threw me off. Just need more training.

As always really good info. Personally, I have always liked the 92, especially the compact which I don’t think most folks care for. As you alluded and I could not agree more what I see as the biggest issue with the pistoI is the common variants with the darn safety. I am strictly a G model user de-cockers yes, safeties no way. I encourage the conversion for others when possible for them. My firstest, bestest will always be the 1911 but there are rough and tumble times when the 92 is not a bad choice imho. After all Christmas is upon us and it is nearly time for John McClain to secure Nakatomi Plaza ; ).

I did get my optics plate but I don't plan on running a red dot because it's just too damn tall. It was definitely an afterthought. Other than that it's a beautiful firearm. Glassy smooth, great trigger with a nice short reset. I may do a trigger reach reduction mod on it eventually to make it lay a bit further back to accommodate my shorter finger a bit better. But seriously... Every time I shoot it all I can do is smile. It's just a joy to shoot and it, along with my cz p-01 feel like how I've always wanted a pistol to feel, solid and reliable.

The only 2 problems with the m9 was the cracked slide but was addressed a long time ago and the fact that the military was buying cheap aftermarket magazines instead of the factory or mecgar mags. I’m a beretta fan and absolutely respect your opinion. The G model conversions definitely help in negating the slide mounted safety issue (which is something I never was keen on) but yeah they should release more frame mounted safeties.
I like the vertec grip options although never held one myself, I actually shoot incredibly well with stock grips in my medium sized hands although I’m not sure wether thin grips or a vertec grip is better especially considering most people I know with vertecs switch to the wraparound grip.

I don't know why you would consider either of those a range toy. I would choose a Langdonized 92X Performance for its Vertec frame. My 92X feels better in my hand than my 92A1, and I wear men's size large gloves. With a 92X, you can add a grip that has a palm swell, like the M9A4. Anyway, that's just my $0.02. @desmondhumebrotha3522 ปีที่แล้ว

@@bob_mosavo it absolutely helps thank you! So I only really shoot at the range and don’t carry, hence range toy and possibly HD.
As for the those two beretta models, they seem to be the very best 92s you can buy and it’s a platform I’m very comfortable with and they just work for me. Thing is all the ranges nearby only rent older 92fs and m9a1 models so I’ve got to rely on other opinions.
I’ll definitely see if they have any vertec grip options in stock at a local store, they sound pretty great.
As a side note, If I don’t go with beretta I’d be looking at BUL sas ii but as we all know they are very rarely available anywhere.

Got a 92 and I just love the looks, and yes, it fits my big hands. Trigger is something to get accustomed to.

I completely agree with your first complaint. The first thing I had done was to install a G conversion kit onto a 92FS. My only other gripe is admittedly petty: I never liked the external trigger bar. It looks sloppy, and would have preferred that it was internalized within the frame. Besides those two minor things, I personally have no other issues with the design.

Life long Beretta lover, and after Jan. 4th 2023 I learned to love it more. At 2:45 pm, I'm at my pc, just a few feet from the front door. Within a heart beat of that door crashing in, I had my 92a1, in my hand and leveled at the Dudes face. First thing I did was check his hands, empty. Had he carried a gun, knife, rock or feather he'd be shot. Looking at his eyes, wild like, sweat pouring off his face, out of breath. When I knew he saw my gun, he started backing up, out the door. Had he kept coming, he'd be shot. Thank God he ran, no shots fired..
I called 911 and reported everything to the dispatcher. Within just a few minutes Las Vegas Metro was at my door. I told the Officer what had happened. By the time I was done explaining what happened, the Officer told me the suspect was cuffed and in the patrol car. The reason for all the sweat, ect.was the Cops chasing him. I was told it would have most likely have been a justifable shooting. After all, I'm in a wheelchair and in poor health. No way I could have fought him. I still haven't found out why he was being chased, more to come I guess.
Well, I had my weapon, ready to go and at my side. My attitude was to NEVER be a victim. Stay armed, stay safe.

Prior military I used the M9 regularly. It never failed me, and I easily qualified every single time. Didn't shoot it for over 10 years, shot a coworker's 92f at the range and looked like an operator. I hate the looks of the gun but it genuinely works and has never malfunctioned on me.

My old Beretta 92FS is still one of my all time favorite guns to shoot. I can understand some of the gripes about them, but I’ve never had any issues I adapted to the Gun.

I was an MP as a Marine, and I remember when I was inexperienced accidentally activating the safety as you described while racking the slide and being pissed at it.
I’m also a 6’5” man, so I always loved the M9’s fat grip and the full-size 20” M16-A2’s and A4’s (but I recognize most people aren’t as big as me).
HOWEVER, if you train to deal with that I have for years preferred a DA/SA semi auto (and especially Beretta’s infamous slide-mounted safety) above all else in a handgun because it’s so much more difficult to cause a negligent discharge than any other type of handgun.

I love mine, however your points are very valid. What i did was replace the right side (muzzle pointing away from you) spring and detent of the safe with a solid bar, as well as use a wilson combat low profile safe. The safe can no longer be used, however it is smaller and less of an issue. A DA/ASA gun does not need a safety, just like 226s

I can't carry a 92FS because of its size and weight but would be glad to have one in the house or a vehicle in a bad situation. I appreciate the smooth action, low recoil and accuracy. I do not prefer the slide mounted safety, but it has never been an issue for me. It is a very nice looking handgun. I will never sell mine.

The slide mounted safety / decocker is my favourite part of the gun. I hate the feel of a frame mounted one

Wow, things were way easier back in the day. I was the second officer in my department to go through the academy with the 92f and had none of these problems nor was I aware of them. I was just happy as heck to have the gun.

Got a standard 92a1 as my first gun. Definitely takes more practice off the bat than the Sig, but the extra safety features are great for beginners. Only thing is that I've never run into an issue with accidentally engaging the safety when racking the gun because I wrap my index finger and thumb below the safety where my thumb is on the grooves and the tip of my index finger is curled back at me. IDK if that's the "right" way to do it, but it works for me.

Love the 92 and use it regularly. Really prefer the G model. I have not worked with any optics yet so we will see. Good presentation.
