In the middle of #Lent, we today hear No. 6 from the 12 monologues by Josef Gabriel #Rheinberger: "O #Haupt voll #Blut und #Wunden" (Oh Sacred Heart Now Wounded). The melody of this chorale is found in the pedal in this arrangement.
Rheinberger (* March 17, 1839 in Vaduz, † November 25, 1901 in Munich) was a Liechtenstein-born composer, organist and music educator.
Rheinberger stands as a significant representative of a diverse musical culture at the end of the classical-romantic era. His extensive works, including 197 published opus numbers alone, include piano music, organ music, sacred and secular choral music, solo songs, chamber music, symphonies, concert overtures, drama music, and operas. Rheinberger's organ music, however, has contributed above all to his fame, although it accounts for only a quarter of his complete works.
