More of this please. Short videos dissecting trends and fashions. What a neat way for all of your followers to stay in touch with the times. I have a very monochromatic approach to makeup and clothes (Black and well-blended eyes paired with flowing wizard robes) and it is SO nice to stay somewhat in touch with “what’s new”.

Me four! I came here to say I personally have never seen such a genderfluid selection of models in any beauty video with this number of examples. I myself am genderfluid but also love male/nonbinary/andogyne makeup (David Bowie!) and like to emulate masculine looks on myself sometimes. This video for that alone felt SO VALIDATING to me. I feel seen, and I'm so glad others do, too,.

So glad you seem to be feeling better, Hannah (hope that you really are). I love the reminder that the “glazed doughnut” trend is pretty much unattainable. As someone well past her youth, I’ve had to acknowledge that that gorgeous glossy skin pretty much requires smooth, tight skin. I mean, I can do a highlight up on my cheekbones, but that’s about it. I appreciate your telling us when chasing a look is going to be futile.

What a in-depth opinion on what the trends are doing for fall, Hannah. I so appreciate that you help us to NOT spend unnecessarily, even to follow these trends. Perhaps these more flexible trends (any blue shadow or red lip) reflect what is happening economically, post Covid and the recent cost of living/ gas heating crisis.

  • @cinemaocd1752

I love thinking of trends as societal art projects. I remember when car modifictions were super trendy about 20 years ago and a lot of people did DIY car mods and there were whole websites and blogs devoted to mocking these people. While some of the mods were indeed hilariously badly done, there was something about it that very much was about bullying people into spending of thousands of dollars to pimp their rides while simultaneously mocking them for wanting to participate in a trend. I just got back from a week in London, which is certainly a city that loves and generates trends and yet the thing I noticed that there were a lot of people doing the cottage core, breezy Edwardian trend in clothes (mostly because it was hot and sweaty), it just seemed like EVERYTHING was on trend. There was no one cut of jeans, no one kind of shoe, no brand name I saw over and over, like I do in the U.S. in my life working on a college campus. Also thrifting/vintage stores are very trendy there, so you would see a lot of people touting their store/market stall as vintage, when it really was just new or used fast fashion repackaged as vintage. But even with this, there was a lot of variety. If something looked old and COULD have been from 20+ years ago, it was on trend.

@3:10 Most don't need to purchase a glossy lip product, just as Hannah said, but in case you do: I was recently recommended the clear/transparent lip gloss by Essence, and although its only a few dollars it's just as good as very high end lip glosses (comfortable, not sticky, long lasting)!

Possible hot take: as someone with oily skin, the glazed skin trend actually makes me feel more self conscious, not less. Seeing people strive for a look that I associate with the feeling of uncomfortable greasiness - it ends up evoking that sensation in me more often. Blargh 🤢

My mom and aunt are both the same way. So they stay far away from highlighter and shiny makeup. While I have reallly dry skin and need some shine. I know it probably is really uncomfortable to get “greasy” I can say that my aunt and mom both are so naturally beautiful when their shine comes through.

i love a glowy complexion as much as the next person, i have extremely dry skin and that is usually my goal
but what i don’t like is how most people can’t achieve the “dolphin skin” look due to texture, discoloration, acne etc, all very normal things
i feel like the dolphin skin trend is an extension of the “clean girl” aesthetic, which to me tells people that if you don’t have perfect skin you can’t look “clean”/put together
i think the trend as a whole can be harmful and cause people to buy too much makeup, buy too much skincare, and even ruin their skin due to over exfoliation, all to try to get perfect skin, when perfect skin simply just does not exist

  • @theprousteffect9717

I like that blue eyeshadow can go in different style directions. It's of course associated with 70's disco glam, can be bold, editorial, or messy, and the woman at 2:10 is rocking a campy, 50's Barbie doll look. Like you, blue eyeshadow isn't the most harmonious with my coloring at all, but I guess that makes it more of a statement look for some of us. A navy blue is also much more neutral.
Seriously loving all these undone makeup trends, especially ones that aren't "bullying you into buying more." 👌👌👌. I'm really sick and tired of this idea that you need to buy every single type of product, rather than using what you already have in a variety of ways to get whichever look you want (the way pro makeup artists do).

So I paused your video at 7:49 because it was at the end of your opinions on the red lipstick trend. At first my reaction was "No, there is a middle of the ground red that is the perfect red though!" I went straight to my collection, pulled all of my red liquid lipsticks, swatched my favorites first, then the rest. In the end I realized I have 2 brick reds that look the exact same, 3 cool toned red that look the exact same, and 5.... yes 5 warm toned reds that look the EXACT SAME. I was shocked and realized I seriously need to see if I can reduce that because I wear red liquid lipstick maybe 3 times a year....... and if this is on trend then maybe my friends will actually want them. Thank you for your opinion and helping me see that you are completely right! LOL!!!

My absolute favourite thing has been duping the vibes of the Byredo black quint with Tati Beauty vol 1. No eyeshadow primer, just smudging the black matte on, then topping the lids with the sequins, and popping the glitter on the inner corners. By the end of my shifts in this summer heat I look like a greedy racoon, I love it. #LivedInGlam #Racoon4Life

Unrelated to your video, but I have to share with someone that cares about makeup:
I've identified Sigma as a brand I'm likely to want to buy from and I give myself a pass on the 14 pan palettes and face duos. I've had enough time since I saw the release of the Alice in Wonderland palette announced to see what inspires me in the color story. The mint matte with the olive tone shimmer, pairing matte red with the olive toned shimmer. I've been playing around with my Dirty Martini palette and Chocolate Martini palettes though and I found that I can dupe the mint + olive look I imagine myself creating with the Alice in Wonderland palette. I also discovered that both palettes have very pretty orange shimmers, which I felt I was missing. I was passing over these palettes for a while because I didn't love the performance of the mattes, but I've found that using a primer makes them work so much better for me. I tend to not use a primer because it can cause me to struggle with blending. This formula works so much better for me with a primer. I'm so much more inspired to use these two palettes now and I think I might pass on this palette. I own pretty red mattes in my Warm Neutrals palette and Untamed palette by Sigma so I can dupe the red matte + olive shimmer look to by pulling one of them in.
I might still buy the cheek duo, but wait to see what they bring out for their Christmas collection. They released a cheek duo last Christmas and I'm anticipating that they may again this year.
I love the brush set but it is very expensive, especialky compared to the Cinderlla brush set. I might buy some Sigma brushes during black Friday but Idk if I can justify even a good sale pricr for the Alice in Wonderland brush set.
I love that this happened though, because I've been going back and forth with myself on buying the palette. I love Sigma and their quality but I felt like I could dupe the vibes of this palette and save my money. The quality of Sigma palettes are hard to turn down though and the palettes are always prettier in person.
I feel like it is such a success for me to actually tell myself no to a product that I think of as a no brainer yes.

I went from total glam to natural neutrals and a bit ”oh i just found this and smudged it on my face”. "I have kind of a love-hate relationship with aesthetic trends. I think that trends are really interesting because they reflect something about our cultural consciousness. At their best, aesthetic trends are kind of like a collective societal art project or art installation, but I feel like at their worst, trends can fuel insecurity and mindless consumerism." I love this take, especially the positive analysis of aesthetic trends as collective art. When we try to follow trends, we are too often lambasted as vapid fashion victims. Capitalism and consumerist culture are large components in all of the ticking parts for sure, but it's so much more than that.

The perfect red lip! I have always loved red lipstick. I have a large variety of every finish and every tone. I am set for this trend and then some!

With you on the blue eyeshadow. It doesn't look good on my coloring. But I love it on anyone else.

Glazed skin is real and achievable. I have a glazed skin look by midday, for zero dollars, whether I want it or not! Unfortunately I do not see this trend often enough in real life to stop wondering if people think I look sweaty. If I have to look shiny I want people to think it’s an intentional look!

Glazed face trend is not age inclusive. Those reflections higlight face bulges, and to have it beautiful, those bulges have to be on the right places. Face fat migrates/leaves certain areas after certain age, so you would inevitably highlight age-related changes with that.
E.g. after 25 i started to notice that my eye sokets are kinda noticable on a face (natural indentations), and with wet finish it obviously gets worse (eye soket is in the shadows, cheek shines as a polished teapot)

Inspired by your approach, I counted all my lipsticks. I don’t think it myself as somebody who has much makeup, but I realized I have TEN red lipsticks. I always like wearing them, but with a trend I guess I feel extra excited to pull them out. It’s also a good moment of recognition to stop buying more red lipsticks.

Blue is an interesting color to be trending for fall. I would think green, purple or red / berry would be more on trend for fall.
I have been feeling a mint and peacock look recently though. Its interesting to me to be feeling a pastel tone for fall. I think of pastel for spring.
I loved the pic you showed with the model wearing green on the bottom outer corner of her eye. It reminds me of Lauren's bright pink look from back in the day when she was feeling color more.

As someone w combination skin that feels good when hydrated, the glazed skin look is what I wore before it became a trend, but I don't wear highlighters at all and my ver is really simple: I wear BM Original powder foundation, then set/melt it w a face mist (not even a setting spray bc I just need hydration). I don't use a particular face mist either, just one w a nice mister and ingredients I like (I've liked ones from the Body Shop, elf, CP, Milani so far). The face mists melt the powder together and give a dewy shine (some more than others - I don't like CP's dewy mist bc it's a little too oily for my non-dry skin, and prefer their Fresh AF). I also like that face mists are ways to rehydrate ur face throughout the day, whether u have makeup or not, and tend to have skincare ingredients, unlike setting sprays.
A lot of highlighters blend into my skin tone (light-med w warm, yellow undertone) and disappear, and the mica in highlters or glowy blushes actually dulls my skin compared to the mist. Also, glowy blushes can sometimes emphasize texture if I have any, while my face mist never does. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I love darker blue shimmers. They create iridescent, blurple gradients over brown mattes. Blues also really make my dark brown eyes pop. It can be an intimidating color at first, but it's so pretty when u figure out how to make it work for u. 😁💙

I can definitely see the TFD influence in your content lately. Short and snappy videos with very clear topics and tag lines.
I, personally, like it for a change and a pick me up. However, I truly hope it doesn't come at a cost of your usual deeper, philosophical and longer videos. Maybe a 1 short, 2/3 long video ratio fits well?
Although you are of course the one to decide on this. I will always be at patreon for the meandering thoughts ❤

I would argue the vinyl red lip is now wearable with these innovations of liquid lips? See: Haus Labs, Urban Decay, and Maybelline. They might not be as shiny as we'd like but they do not budge while keeping a gloss!
I LOVE a blue eye. It's kinda of that reframing of the iconography of a "'promiscuous' woman from the 90's - 2000's." Blue eyes and red lip always seemed like the combo that appalled parents in film at the time.
Also, I love your inclusivity of examples! This sounds like it should be an obvious thing to do - just including photos of the trend no matter who it's on but it's strangely refreshing and new? Like I haven't seen anyone else do this. I really appreciate this.

I love the trends coming back. It was probably mid to late 90s when we were wearing bright blue toned red lips with white eyeliner, blue eyeshadow and obscene amounts of mascara.
I mean I’m still wearing obscene amounts of mascara (as opposed to false lashes).
Oily skin girl here hates these glassy skin trends. I’ve just been going without foundation and letting my natural glow work it’s magic.
I love sort of blowing out my lower lash line. It’s fun!

I love the blurred red lips too!
But I would argue with a red lip liner and a little bit of gloss the shiny red lip is pretty achievable and wearable.
Definitely have to check after meals, but sometimes I actually enjoy carrying a cute compact to baby my red lips...

I have personally found that glazed skin, is achievable in a realistic (not instagram filter style), with some good skincare that adds that glow through hydration, and a nice hydrating foundation/tinted moisturizer. However I am aware that is not easy for everyone with like oily skin struggling with it haha.
