Don't Shoulder The Shotgun: Shotgun Wing Shooting & Duck Hunting

There are many tips on how to shoot better and they all start with the basics. Whether you're wing shooting hunting, shooting sporting clays, or trap shooting, the fundamentals should be the same.
In this new series with Beretta professional sporting clay shooters Zach Kienbaum and Desirae Edmunds, they'll take a look at fundamentals and tips for better wing shooting both at the range and in the marsh. There might even be a few tips that go against how you were taught to shoot. We're starting with the basics of when it comes time to pull the trigger. Many of us were told to shoulder the shotgun by bringing the stock to our shoulder then taking aim. The correct term is to mount the shotgun by bringing it to your face. Doing so, will automatically place it on your shoulder and make for a quicker transition when the shot is called.

The short grip is good, mounting the gun higher on the shoulder keeps you from leaning your head over to shoot. Practicing riding the shotgun will train you to have a better mount. Also take time to shoot in weird positions before season in trap you have left to right right to left. If you lean forward so you have to shoot upwards you have passing overhead shots with the same set up. The best lesson I took was learning to ride the shotgun while standing on one foot, the reason why is because you never seem to find solid footing in mud muck and brambles so being able to shoot from a disadvantage of the feet it a good skill. Also practice not taking off the safety till you are going to shoot and placing it on after shooting. There is a lot of times you point and realize something is in your sight picture like the muzzle of another person's gun, another person, your 100 dollar flapper, etc... there is always more ducks geese, and pheasants learning when not to shoot is more important than knowing when to.

That bit about the corner of your wall soumds pretty silly till you do it. One week before opener, 5-10 minutes a night I practice mounting the gun and swinging from corner to corner of wall. Works pretty darn well. Opener tomorrow here we go boys! Good luck to all!

both eyes focus on the target don't look at the end of the gun but maintain awareness of it [after determining eye dominance ] Gun comes to head not head to gun top of stock should be level with top off shoulder do not crouch over the gun keep swing going after the shot is taken. One thing you didn’t mention about practicing your shouldering for hunting is the safety. When you’re hunting, the safety should never come off until you are mounting the gun and that’s a good thing to practice. If you can’t get your safety off during the shouldering process, you better learn. I was a bird hunting guide for 40 years, and our rule was: the safety doesn’t come off until the bird is in the air and high enough to safely shoot. Taking it off when the dog is on point or ducks are circling the blind is unacceptable. Too many things can happen before you shoot. Great video.

Also, make sure to slightly shorten your stock to take into account the thickness of your hunting clothes. If you don't, your shotgun mounting will feel very odd.
