Not the wordy beginning, but I agree with the lyrical tune does sound like them. It's that 1930s evenness of rhythm and then the dissonances and changes in harmonies. It is beautiful though. Sounds like Good thing going too
While this is a nice enough song (though I personally find it a bit of a dirge), it's in no way representative of the show, which is bizarrely uneven in tone and style. And pretty much all of the characters are loathsome. I saw the previous incarnation, Bounce, in Chicago and, to be honest, all the revisions and additions amounted to not much more than rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. It's the only Sondheim show I seriously dislike.
I don't care about the show i'm just happy it gave us this tune. I stumbled upon it a long time ago and it always stuck with me as just an oddball little known gem from Sondheim. I'm glad we have it
On TH-cam there's a close-up version sung solo by Claybourne Elder that brought tears to my eyes. Look for it. You'll never forget it.
Mr. Steven Sondheim....the best thing that ever happened for our current musical theater! RIP
Very sorry....Stephen!
I hope the complete video of this production becomes available! What a beautiful song.
Bravo Sondheim!...just brilliant.
I don’t think he could have written this before he was in a relationship. It feels very personal.
You wouldn't happen to have the full pro shot of this?
is there a video of the whole production?
This show had such a great score. Too bad, it never quite made it.
Sounds a bit Kander and Ebb-ish.
