Now this really looks like a great way to learn how the circle works. Also it's melodic, and different rhythms can be added for more fun. Thanks Scott.
Chop shop is a GREAT idea. Its what advancing intermediate players want. How to keep playing log lines and keep going. The pros when soloing just go on and on with these long non stop ideas and its what I want to get to.
I'm happy to add this exercise to my long work in progress which is going through all the major scales by thirds. CEG, DFA, EGB...etc. It takes a lot of time, but I'm keeping the faith that it will pay off down the road. It seems to me that this pattern will be very helpful to that endeavor. Thank you. What a cool hobby, but for those of us who don't have the time to dedicate our lives to the instrument (I mean hours everyday), we have to keep our minds disciplined to not compare ourselves to the professionals. Like playing tennis. It's fun to hit the ball, and play games.
with no music class background at all, you have made my learning much easier, i learn totally by ear.. therefore dont need finger chats or pdfs i only need your videos. iwish you were staying in my neighborhood. guide me on how i can get skype lessons or full package video lessons from you. THANKS
Whew... you had me there for a moment. I thought you said psycho patterns. Your demonstrations of ways to practice proves a point many teachers make... that your practice should sound musical... even scales. I am a 70 year old late bloomer. I've been messing around with music all my life but now that I am retired I want to stop just messing and learn how to practice. Thanks for the video tutorials. Cheers bro
Hey David! Psycho Patterns sounds like an appropriate name for these exercises. haha!! Yeah, everything you play should sound musical. That might be my next video idea. Thanks!!!
I thought you'd get a kick out of that.. psycho patterns. I wrote them out so I could practice them. I've been messing with a tenor for about five years. I have to start doing some work if I want to progress. I won't say I have mastered the flute but I play well enough that I can join in at the jazz jam. I won't take my sax though. What I usually do is turn on my favorite jazz station and play along. Lately I've been forcing myself to play scales also. Your pattern exercise is a good alternative to what I've been doing. Usually I just play the scales up and down and then the cord tones. Cheers mate.
This is a great exercise for me as a tuba player because this pattern is my basic ascending pattern for a walking bass line, I’ll just have to insert my descending pattern (1235 | 1765) .
Dope lesson on cycle patterns...bout to take a blank paper and write it out...of course use a metronome...nice point about running out of notes...I cant play that high on the register...lol...but of course if you showed me how to do it then that'll be another tool in the toolbox...plus this gives me an opportunity to smash the lower notes on the sax when you described to drop down in the register when you play the 4 as the new 1...I am definitely interested in skype lessons so I can learn how to smash out to r&b tunes, hip hop instrumentals, jazz standards that I cringe to but willing to learn that art, and reading notes on a music sheet like getting better on sight reading...I know...count to 4...but with all those dotted notes, 8th rests, and all kinds of black ink on the grid, my mind goes blank...thats what I wanna work on and cant go wrong with that...please keep sending vids like this and of course your lick tutorials...theyre dope too...and when I get the coins right in the bank imma sign up...keep up the great work and for inspiring me to open up my saxophone case and playing...literally in tears of joy sir...
This is way more cooler and informational that the triad vid..they are patterns to learn..ur chop vids are cool..have you thought about namm 2019? Some youtubers get sponsor n free trips just to play on their booth. I like face to face lessons..cause live sound..here is market yourself with other youtubers..you have the circle..keep using that..maybe simple chords..to harmonize..i just started playing..but played in h.s. been playing for 5 months..
I take courses with a 65 yrs old gangsta..lol..he keeps pushing scales n i want to learn patterns so I look around TH-cam...to figure out he's scales n I'll figure out patterns here..thanks..
Hey! Yeah, they are 2 different ways of looking at chords. I was at NAMM in 2017 for P. Mauriat. Hope to be back in 2019 for one of my endorsing companies.
Yes, just go the opposite direction but start on the 5th and come down. So 5 3 1 (C) 5 3 1 (G) 531 (D) etc. You start on the 5 so you don't have a repeated note because the 5 is the 1 in the next chord.
Hey Scott, do you recommend writing the notes out and playing or trying to figure them out mentally and playing only from memory? Also, I would love it if you created a video for fingering tips, tricks, good habits and how to break bad ones. As usual, I love your videos! Thanks mate!
Thanks Alex! That's a great idea, I'll put that on the list. For the cycle pattern, don't write it out unless you have too. Just think 1 2 3 5...4 (1 2 3 5). Start it off in easy keys like C, G, D, F etc. then when you are comfortable work on the harder keys.
Scott do you have any exercises that cover the entire range of each scale. I love this 1235 pattern for getting around the cycle of Fourths but leaving out some of the notes isn’t helping me get down my scales cold.
Hey Dave - check out my video Question & Answer #1. It shows all of the my gear and tells it bit about it. It's also listed in the description of my videos.
Hey Gene. There is an F# & C# in the key of D. However, the C# is the 7th degree (note in) the D scale so it never gets played in this pattern, because the notes in the pattern are 1 2 3 5.
Gene, when you play the scale of D, the notes are: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C# and high D completes the cycle of 8 keys. If you play tbese notes, you will hear the familiar sound: do, reh mi, fah, so, la, ti (and) do. So, the key of D has 2 sharps (as I listed), F# and C#. D is the first note in the scale, F# is the 3rd, A is the 5th. Hope this helps.
Your video are incredible. But I would like to ask you if could you talk a little bit slower because my English is not very well .Thank you for your advice on the saxophone .
Scott is always the best. 👍

Thank you Scott! Another great way to improve fluency on the saxophone and not sound boring doing it. Love it! Keep them coming....
Thanks Sabrina! Check out the "Coltrane Lick" video to see how to use this pattern in improv.

Great video Scott! And another great exercise as well. Your explanations make difficult things easy to understand and make exercise fun 😄
Hey Timo! Glad you're enjoying them. I try to break it down into really digestible parts :-)
Absolute eye opener
👍👍👍
ThANKS for the explenation great Cycle Pattern
thanks for the lesson, I`m just curious what is a chop? When I`ll be using this skill?
Chop is a slang term for ability to play well and clean. "He's got great chops" ... .he plays really well with good technique.
@@ScottPaddock Thanks a lot, keep up the great work.
You are the best Guroo out there🇳🇵
I'm taking notes, bruh ! as in, writing that down on paper ! You rock ! 1 2 3 5 etc, etc ....
That's a good one to get the scales under your fingers and build your chops!
So good
Thanx a lot Scott.. great exercise
Thanks!!
This is also a great way to work on your ii-V progressions!
👍👍👍

I enjoy your everyday video, the explanation and charisma. It would be great have finger charts.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks!!
This is a great practice pattern for the cycle of 4ths. Is there a pattern moving the other way for the 5ths? Thanks.
Yes, just go the opposite direction but start on the 5th and come down. So 5 3 1 (C) 5 3 1 (G) 531 (D) etc. You start on the 5 so you don't have a repeated note because the 5 is the 1 in the next chord.
Again amazing
👍👍👍

It sounds funny but that exercise sounds so musical on your PM. I can’t wait until I sound that good and obtain that speed on mine.
Thanks! Gradually bump that speed and you'll be crushing it in no time!
Scott do you have any exercises that cover the entire range of each scale. I love this 1235 pattern for getting around the cycle of Fourths but leaving out some of the notes isn’t helping me get down my scales cold.
Hey Linda, I've put some other "chop shop" videos up. Check those out, they are more technique based.
Great lessons, thank you very much for your time in helping sax players like myself!
👍👍👍
I'm struggling a bit understanding circle of fifths.
am sure you'll love it if u understand
Good exercise. I love it!
Thanks Robert! It's a great chop building exercise.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✌️Thank you¡¡
Nice tutoring video! Which mic did you use on it?

Good exercise for learning modes. What is your set up Scott? I have a Chinese tenor with the same finish :-0

Is there a C# in key D?
Hey Gene. There is an F# & C# in the key of D. However, the C# is the 7th degree (note in) the D scale so it never gets played in this pattern, because the notes in the pattern are 1 2 3 5.
Only playing a couple of years and my music theory is weak, not sure i understand but thanks for your reply.
Cheers Gene
Check out my video on modes. Should clear everything up!
Got it Thanks
Your video are incredible. But I would like to ask you if could you talk a little bit slower because my English is not very well .Thank you for your advice on the saxophone .
Thank you! I do talk very fast. Trying to slow it down a bit, but that is my natural speech pattern.
In d maj, I thought C was a sharp aswell
your C is sharp in D maj scale
On the Alto Sax there are 5 half steps between each note shown when moving in both directions
I'll really date myself here, but does anyone besides me recognize the first four notes of "Begin The Beguine?"
😁
Yeah, I can hear that. Try playing any pentatonic scale and you'll hear Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood".
Please add subtitle indonesian
Very wrong? 0:43
C
1. C#
2. D
3. D#
4. E
5. E#/F
C to G is not 5 steps. Its 6. Whats up with that?
Your explanation on how to bounce between 2 different scales with this pattern is confusing at best
