Couture dresses are things of wonder. My cousin got married in Dior in 1959, and my late mother bought one couture outfit every two years throughout her life - never the "high fashion" items because they date very quickly, but the timeless classics - and then got a dressmaker to make a copy in a contrasting colour. She was always the best-dressed mother when I was at school!
I saw it yesterday and what a sweet movie. I loved Ms Harris and her determination for a beautiful dress. How nice to see an older lady aspire to something special even if at a high cost for her. Her only obstacle is getting the money, not her age, not her station in life, not her lack of social standing, she works hard and overcomes everything. Great lesson in perseverance!
I grew up in the 50s and 60s when women and men dressed so well. It definitely wasn't expensive clothing but everyone dressed with care, looked their best, and never looked like they just got out of bed. I really miss those days.
Consider yourself lucky! I’m 15. I would absolutely love to wear clothes like you mentioned most people wore. But those blazers and shirts and suit trousers are wayyyyyyy too impractical price-wise now. An H&M suit would be the same price as more simple but higher quality clothes (which weren’t made in sweatshops either). So for now, I’ve got my dad’s old shirt but that’s about it.
In 1967 my mom bought me a pair of Christian Dior STOCKINGS- yes stockings, not pantyhose for my Confirmation. They were $6.00- a lot of money back then for kid's stockings. They were white with a lacy pattern. I have no idea what they would cost today. I was as thrilled back then as Mrs. Harris is "today!" 💚🕊️💚
Those dresses are magnifique! Having Asian and Black models in the movie is a nice reminder of some Dior muses like Alla Ilchun (Asia) and Dorothea Church (African American).
Absolutely loved the movie. Saw it at my local AMC theatre 2 days ago and was delighted and entranced the entire length of the movie. Thank you for this video!
Looking forward to seeing this film! A special piece of clothing can really be transformative. I remember coming across a Georgio Armani pant suit. I was 20 and working in retail to pay my way through college and she was a beautiful pearl grey fine wool gabardine relaxed men's cut. She was also $750! On sale!l and I was obsessed. I would come into the department store where she was hanging and hide her in areas where no one was likely to find her. All was good for about a month and she dropped in price when I was busted by one of the ladies who worked there. Luckily, she understood and hid 'my' suit in the back room until I was ready to purchase. It took another 4 months before lady grey came home with me. I wore her with a white cotton t and black Ferragamo loafers stuffed at the toe because they were too big on me. I had found those at a garage sale. And each time, I felt like a boss
Christian Dior came to prominence in the UK when Princess Margaret wore one of his beautiful gowns on her 21st birthday. His “New Look” gowns were a watershed moment in history as they signalled a complete departure from the austerity of World War 2 & were very futuristic at the time.
I read this book when I was a young girl and barely understood what Dior was, but I loved it. I can't wait to see the film and Lesley Manville in the leading role.
The ‘old’ version Mrs ‘Arris goes to Paris is available as a free to view movie on TH-cam. It’s a lovely film, terrific cast . (Angela Lansbury, Omar Shariff, Diana Rigg)
Interesting how that baby blue dress is so different in different lighting; love it in the white studio as much as in the film's fashion show scene. I wish they featured Mrs. Harris' coat that she wore most of the film -- even though the Dior had the spotlight, her blue plaid coat was probably my fav piece of the entire film! Having seen the Dior exhibit that was touring for a while, this film meant so much more. And the message about meant-to-be, not meant-to-be also resonated (and made me cry!). Great film, and great behind-the-scenes!
I just watched this last night and I fell in love with it, and the dresses. I've never been able to afford couture, plus I've never had a place to wear it, but those are gorgeous.
Ive been working on a Dior dress, the Junon gown to be precise but with an off shoulder bodice instead of strapless, and it has been a dream to work on from the innermost layers to slowly making all the petals of the gown. Its like moonlight when it spins since its made of frosted tulle and organza with a chiffon base
Love the movie and the dresses displayed in the movie. The girl model looked Audrey Hepburnisk. My mom and I were even oohing and ahhing over the everyday clothing and coats. This is my type of movie! I’m trying to find information about the accuracy of the time when Christian Dior decided to make his dresses ready-to-wear.
I read the book years ago and have never forgotten it. I past it around to my mother who loved fashion thenI leant it to someone and didn't get it back!!!
Thankyou for telling me what Temptation would cost today, cause I want a Dior dress after seeing the movie, and now I know I'm gonna have to budget tightly!
@Laura, maybe you could be the trend setter! I love color and even if I'm just grocery shopping I wear a nice outfit, if nothing else, to make myself feel good.
@@Clutching.My.Pearlsi do the same. when we went threw the pandemic. the only place i could do my full glam make up was to go grocery shop all dressed up. there was an employee there who said i was always in full glam mode when i came there lol!!

I remember many many years ago watching Kathleen Harrison in Mrs Harris goes to Paris. I would love to see the newer version of the film with Lesley Manville.
Any textile conservator will tell you no gloves! They actually stress the fabric of the garment more than your clean hands would (because it’s fabric rubbing on fabric), and with them you can’t properly feel for unstable spots that need especially careful handling
I wasn't born in the era but I consider myself a 1950s housewife at heart. I wish people still cared about how they look, present themselves to others.
Ok internet..i need your help. I absolutely love this movie and have wanted to find an off-shoulder bolero like the temptation dress for my wedding. Sadly I cannot find anything that comes close. Would anyone happen to have a lead on something similar? If so please send info my way!
never even heard of the movie, but Love the fashion lesson. Who did the petal skirt that attached at the waist over a form fitting sheath to mid calf or so with a big, wide brim hat?
A serious question can I actually call the fashion houses if I happened to be rich and let them make a replica of the dresses from decades ago? Please someone answer
In the You Tube video, does Joe Zee present only the “replica gowns” of the original CD creations? He wears white gloves for this! Juxtapose this with the Marilyn Monroe dress destroyed by KK and Ripley’s! Christian Dior original gowns are exquisite but white glove treatment for replicas?
Most likely the producers of the video want to amplify the idea of the gowns being museum quality (which of course they are not) so hence the white glove treatment. But they are expensive, hand crafted pieces of fashion so careful handling is called for when presenting the gowns.
Gloves are inappropriate anyway really. Its a farce... with gloves one can't really feel how they are pulling and tugging on the fabric, buttons, etc because of the limited dexterity while wearing gloves. Try texting or putting on a corset while wearing gloves and you will see why those bulky cotton gloves are not at all practical or doing any conservational favors. Nitrile gloves are more de riguer today, hell just washed hands free of perfumes and lotions is good enough. The clothes are pretty but honestly quite boring anyway. The quality of that sequin work is rather...meh

the dior house should kick out that Italian designer already, her collections for dior had been so lacking of scandal , shock, or new techniques , which makes dior dior
I would have loved much more time to hear from the designer, rather than the host. I also read that Dior’s New Look very long and full skirts were in reaction to the fabric shortages and rationing during the war, when this generous use of fabric wasn’t possible.
Did he say "dutch satin"? It's supposed to be duchesse satin... Sorry, but these detail always spoile it for me... I'm not native English nor French speaker but there are things you should have right.
I think he tried to say double, duchess (Dutch-ess) satin in US English. But I’ve always heard the French pronunciation Doo-shess. It is a double weave satin, thicker and heavier than a single weave, and with more body.
She pronounces it wrong, you would think that they would get it right. It's Christi-on not Christi-AN, un less Monsieur Dior was a woman, then it is Christi ANN.
I would have loved to see a more nuanced costume story from the likes of the imagination of John Galliano or something. Something...creative. Replicas of a real show and less than thrilling for me personally. If it were about the 1947 show, sure but meh I don't know. The story of this movie is cute but the costuming is too boring IMHO.
Different strokes for different folks. The title of this video didn’t reference Galliano. There’s got to be a video out there you CAN enjoy. How miserable does a person have to be to jump on a thread just to be so negative and pissy?

Still can’t believe she was allowed to destroy that historically significant Marilyn couture dress. Kim has no class whatsoever!

I was hoping they would mention that this was a remake.
I did not realize this was a remake.
Angela Lansbury was a great choice too!
so jealous of the costume team that got to make the gowns for the fashion show, wish I could work on a project like this, J'adore Dior

Another reason for the full skirts and more fabric being used in general was the end of WWII fabric rationing.

I thought the current standard for handling historic textiles was nitrile gloves because cotton can snag.
It's clean, bare hands because you need to be able to feel what your hands are doing
I thought it was odd that Jenny included the Bar suit from 1947 and the Cachotier ensemble from 1951, considering the story was set in 1957.
