A couple ideas to try to see if patterns improve:
    1. Try lubing the over powder wad with 100% pure neatsfoot oil. One advantage it has is that it won't dry out during a hunt and it shouldn't foul the powder charge.
    2. Instead of using an over powder wad, use a volume of cornmeal equal to the volume of powder you're shooting. It will act as a gas seal but since it's a powder it'll disperse immediately after it exits the muzzle.
Also if you're unable to get good patterns with the choke try honing it out a little. Sometimes too much choke distorts the shot causing blown patterns.
Good luck with it, that's an awesome gun you built.

      Thanks.
Yea I can do that I typically don't lube with spit when hunting account of that.
      I will try it.
I have used muffin mix already in my trade gun as a buffering compound but still used a wad.
I can try that with this.
I agree if I don't get good results I could do that. Rather than hone it, I'd just as soon cut it shorter which would restrict it less.
Idk if you noticed but the .62 tip had rings turned on the exterior from Bobby when I got it. I didn't like that as it looked out of place and drew attention. I had Mark Weader cut it down on his lathe. It wasn't going to change anything since it was just the .62... I could do the same thing with the .580 choke, which would make it shorter but also open it up to about .590 or .595.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it

Suprised no ones mentioned paper shot cups/shotcups in general. From all my research they are the key to tight patterns if you can get em to stay together since they dont allow the shot to start spreading till about 10yds past the muzzle and you can adjust that by slitting em. Ill have alot of testing to do once i get my trade gun together, gonna be ordering it from pecatonica end of the month hopefully

Nice I have an old video on my channel with paper shot cups.

Just my opinion but I think your blowing the patern apart with that much power, I'd back it down to about 45 and work up 5 each time until you hold a good patern.

Nice video Brian Would love to sit down and have a conversation someday with ya about muzzleloading.

That seems pretty dissapointing the difference between cylinder and the choke, especially at 40 yards. I understand the appeal of being able to change chokes, but a good jug choke or dedicated full choke barrel throws an immensely better pattern at those ranges.

      I thought the same thing.
      Will do other tests.
Should probably bench, and try different loads.
At this rate I'll just shoot the cylinder. However it shoots way better than my 36" rice barrel in my trade gun.
Would you think it is better due to the barrel length?
It would be 10" more barrel on this gun.

Yeah the length alone will help. I have a 16ga Colerain straight cylinder and could never get turkey killing patterns past 22-23 yards no matter what I tried. Built one with a 20ga Colerain full turkey choke and it smokes em dead with tight patterns to 40yards, just impressive. That's a dedicated turkey gun, but worth it! @@bkauffman0390

So would you care to hear my solution for both my cylinder bore smoothies? One 12ga, the other .54 cal I like to call >>>---death in 1761---->

      Absolutely

@bkauffman0390 a over powder card, a modern flite control shot wad. Designed for modern cylinder bore riot guns. And an overshot card. 12ga speaks for itself. 54 cal=28ga.
Your barrel may actually achieve even better results, and appears so.
Point I may be old but I pray never to old to learn.
