Just a thought - if you went with a 16, it would still be a custom fowler, and not the same as everyone else's, so if you want 16, go with it. That's a beautiful gun.
Go for it Brian. If Hoyt says the barrel wall thickness is thick enough to be bored out to 14 guage, that's a good bore size. If you don't like it, you can build another gun. TC
I can tell you years back even with modern guns, I found a 16 gauge to be better than the 12's and 20's I was hunting and pf course, people looked at me funny because you had to look around for 16 gauge shells. I have a Pedersoli Indian Trade gun in .62/20 gauge that's got to be about as much to shoot as I can get, but I picked up a British doglock carbine that's actually about a 14 gauge and it's a real joy to shoot, even though it's a bit longer than my Brown Bess carbine, it actually points and carries better and should make a great small game gun.
I would love to get a 16 ga. Fowler. I have had four modern 16’s loved them all still have a 5 diamond Remington 870 . You can get all the wads at Dixon’s gun shop in Kempton PA if you don’t mind going on a road trip.
If you want a smooth bore that shoots good maybe a 30" half round to octagon that is good and stiff and a perfect tuned medium syler lock. That used to be the standard for competition.
Bore it to 16 ga. N call it a 14 ga lol . But I also totally understand how yer feeling about the weight and everyone having one. I like to be different also!

I like the idea of a 14 ga as long as barrel material is sufficient. Would be great turkey and small game fowler

Yea dixons is about an hour and a half.
I can pay a good amount for shipping rather than make the trip

I had a 36" trade gun I sold to Ethan Yazel. I wanted the longer barrel.
You know you have to do a video on Bobby shop now that you got us interested. Dont worry about being normal
The odd size of 14g would be really neat. Go for it.

16 ga. should make a fine fowling piece. The perfect one ounce square load.
