  • Today we repair the rarest Sega Game Gear which has ever been seen in real life. It needs to have its capacitors replaced before they leak everywhere and ruin the motherboard beyond repair.

    to anybody reading this: when installing new through hole capacitors, pre- bend and pre-cut the capacitor legs BEFORE soldering them to the board. DO NOT install the caps then bend the legs over. it stresses the pads and can detach them from the pcb, particularly if electrolyte leakage has been a problem. don't copy bad practices from this video.

      Yes, I also cringed at that and how he removes old caps. If you had a leakage due to a bad capacitor, your pad and/or trace have a good chance to go off if you do that. Please unsolder your old caps properly. To be fair, he is working on electronics older than he is, so I give him credit.

    Man the way you remove the surface mounted capacitors make me tense cause I tried that once on one of GG's and I tore a few solder pads off had to scratch up the trace leading to it to get a good solder point. I desolder each and every cap individually. Awesome you got the smoked clear GG. I wish the GG had a aftermarket shell so I could put my fully modded GG in.

    • @VonCreeperTv
      @VonCreeperTv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you desolder you can get more easy the caps and dont have chance of broke anything and dontneed do the next step desolder pins of thecap you broke

    • @geraldv203
      @geraldv203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because of corrosion, the more the caps were leaking, the easier this way to remove caps is, thus safer for the PCB. The way the new caps were soldered is much riskier for old hardware : even a slight force applied to the legs can rip off the pads. I think this way came from an old tutorial for beginners in soldering. Always bend legs of a component before solder them, never after.
      9:46 If this capacitor is a 85°C one as I suppose, instead of 105°C for the original ones, it's a clear loss of reliability in this DC-DC power section.
      10:11 using cotton swab on glass is also questionable as you can scratch the glass with this thing.

  • @utubechannel8670
    @utubechannel8670 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    to anybody reading this: don't wiggle the capacitors until they break off! you put extra stress on the pads when you do that and on old tech that's not good news, particularly if there has been electrolyte leakage. just use a soldering iron to desolder them. it's just as quick and much, much safer.

    Top tips. Ditch the gas iron, the never get hot enough for most prolonged tasks and can be dangerous if damaged. They also eat gas. A cheapo £30 temperature controlled one will do you proud for years and often they come with hot air station too (very helpful for SMD stuff). Don't use a wet sponge, this cools the tip use a copper solder cleaner (looks like a brillo pad) as this will clean the tip and not cool the iron.
