Oh man, such a relief. Here I was thinking I set you up for failure. So glad this one worked out. Looking forward to a screen mod to one of the other two in the future.
Once again, thanks for donating the Game Gears! Was a fun series and enjoyed getting to know the internals of the system. Kind of relieved this one is working so I can do the giveaway as promised. In future I'd love to repair both a stock unit for myself and own a modded one too. Anyway plan to tackle a few other systems in the backlog that I'm pretty excited to start working on, but hopefully you'll see the Episode 1 Game Gear live on as an LCD modded unit in the not-too-distant future. Cheers.

when it comes to these old surface mounted caps, I usually snip them off just at the bottom and then remove the black plastic peace, then desolder the legs from the bord its a lot easier and i haven't lost any pads since I started doing it this way.
I also had one of these and the backlight went out after a few years. Just died like that and went all dark. Those high voltage tubes were not really reliable but was the best low cost solution back then.
i am also repairing game gears for some years now. dont know how many went through my hands, around 40 pieces i guess. what i can say is, only half were fixable with my skills. game gears which shut off after 1 sec for example are 99% not fixable for me. funny thing is, i never had an broken power board, but replaced the caps anyway on them : )
One thing to note: after you snip the legs of the through hole components, always re-solder the joint. The act of snipping the legs can create micro-fractures in the solder which may lead to failure down the line. Note sure if you did this, but it wasn't shown in the video. This inspired me to pull my Game Gear apart just to check for any corrosion . Seems all good but might order some replacement caps anyway! Keep up the great work!
The UK has a "wadding" kind of Brasso that works wonders buffing out minor light scratching on plastics. It would help making the screen protector on this unit pop.
Your videos are very informative and I enjoy them greatly. You instill confidence in your viewers where otherwise we might just give up on some of these relics. I look forward to much more content from you. Thank you! #gamegear
@@BorderlineOCD I do it myself as well as watching vids. Maybe less often nowadays. But it is always a calming moment, having to work with your hands and focusing on very fine details.
Outstanding content, as ever. And I cannot WAIT for the TG-16 series; one of my personal favorite consoles, and one that gets played to this day. STILL haven't beaten Neutopia. Sunday is usually a pretty good day, but any day you upload is instantly elevated to just that much better. Dude I feel your pain. My hands cramped from replacing so many capacitors. I fixed maybe around 20 systems and still have another 9 to go and 7 battery packs to fix. I put it all away for the moment to take a break. I'll sell them all to ya.
Superbly done, sometimes I get a little stressed watching some other retro repair channels because they don't do what you do, and that's do it right. I Love your work. #gamegear
I've stumbled upon this channel a few days ago, and after watching a single video, i've instantly subscribed. Really great content, which is rare to find these days! Keep up the good work! #gamegear
Excellent work, great sense of closure after the struggles of the first two. Keep at it man. With the production quality of your videos, this channel has very good odds of cracking the 1M sub mark. I've been hooked since the Neo Geo trace repair series.
Third time's the charm! I was beginning to lose hope and thought you got 3 duds. 12:56 That right there is the greatest feeling in the world when I finally manage to fix something.
They're not as great as they should be though. Every current IPS screen for the GG is a non-integer resolution so no matter what the image is really ugly.
I remember as a kid wanted a Game gear so bad, but my parents couldn't afford even a Sega haha and when I finally manage to get one year later, the screen didn't last long, unfortunately I sold it to a friend as I didn't know I could change the capacitors, I stump up with your videos remembering that haha, and now you are doing a full series on it, glad you manage to fix it, and thanks for the memories :D
Nice one! I'm happy that you've finally found one that has a working screen. The recap was top-notch, couldn't do it better. Can't wait to see those turbografx 16's :)
It’s crazy that all of these gamegears usually just need a simple recap and they’re good to go for another 20 years. Can’t wait to see more videos of these repairs, they encouraged me to revisit my old consoles to bring them back to life. #gamegear

Your videos have been a massive boon to those of us who are in the console restoration hobby. Here's to a lot more in the future; keep it up! #gamegear
FYI, there's a community project to build a game gear from "all new" parts. it's a new main board (with zero electrolytic caps), compatible with modern IPS upgrade screens and the enhanced sound / Li-On battery board. Basically, you're just moving the original ASIC and cartridge slot and stuff over from the corroded dead board, to the good new one. As far as cleaning rubber membranes go, you can boil them for a short amount of time to restore the feel to them. There are tutorials online with temps and times. Also, IMO that screen was pretty scratched up. I personally would consider polishing the acrylic if you're not going to replace the bezel.

I'd love to have a #gamegear and relive part of my childhood. I used soo many batteries back in the day.
Had one of these a few years ago, but it got broken. Very cool to see this video. #gamegear
I love how you work in such a clean and orderly fashion. Borderline OCD for the win! #gamegear
Used to have a Game Gear in an ASCII travel case, i miss it. Sold it for bills at the time. Mk1 and sonic triple Trouble were the best! #gamegear
I tried to fix my childhood #gamegear after your videos. I recaped it but only turns on for 1 second and closes. At least i see that the screen is working. Maybe I will win this #gamegear and have a reference to fix mine! Keep up the nice work 👍
Awesome video, i watched all 3 so happy you finally fixed one! :D #gamegear
After watching your videos, I want to learn to repair consoles. I have started bidding on them and hope to repair my first one soon.
Thank you for the videos. #gamegear
Wow, those are some teeny tiny caps to replace!
In 2016 I bought 5 Game Gears, all of them having very bad battery leakage damage. Managed to only get 2 of them fully working (the others having damaged traces leading to all sorts of problems), but none of them had a bad screen, so it's interesting to see so many of them fail in your case. Probably different batches of display panels for the european market? Oh, and for the giveaway: #gamegear
