Yay! Finally analysis of Judo that doesn't just focus of throws. The ground game is somewhat a forgotten art and it's awesome to see detailed analysis like this! Keep it up!
helplessly pinning and submitting european fighters definitely is a Japan's favorite pastime... I've done this sport for many years.. and still I think I would tapout to the average 19yo black belt female trained in that country. Its their national sport and they really , really defend it proudly.
Yoko Ono was such a newaza powerhouse. Great technique combined with the strength of a male competitor. She would probably destroy a lot of men on the ground.
It was a different technique entirely, but the first pin reminds me of Gawthorpe vs. Serban at the European championship in 1984, in the way that the pin obscured the strangle. Serban was out for a long time, and was given chest compressions and rushed out on a stretcher. Happily, he came back the next day (lost the bronze medal match)... and he won the event the next year!
Your notes on Ono’s first pin/choke were very helpful. I didn’t quite understand why Yeats-Brown went unconscious but the notes made it clearer. Some of the most original judo content is on your channel, keep up the sensational work.
Yeats-Brown really put herself in that strangle by trying to use her flexibility to avoid being pinned. It's clear that by extending her back she exposed her own neck. Not the first time her trying to use her flexibility has resulted in a problem for her.
Thanks. I had a look at her other matches after reading your comment. I can see what you mean about her getting into problems when relying on her flexibility.
Jemima has put other fighters to sleep. She’s tough and knows the score and can take it on the chin. She’ll come back stronger and wiser after this…. 💪🥋
@@non-stopnewaza9266 maybe you could do a commentary on her choking out the French fighter. It’s called savage judo choke on YT. The French girl tapped but no on saw it so she got put to sleep.. 😴
that was a BRUTAL technique. the neck cranking... yikes. the ref gets an 'F' and should've been up for review on that one. do your dang job. this should be taken quite seriously. yoko is a beast!
The only person who 100% knows if a strangle is on, is the person being strangled. Therefore the onus is on them to tap if they feel like they're being strangled and can't escape. Even though judo referees tend to have a very poor understanding of newaza in general, you can't expect a referee to be omniscient in a match and make correct observations all the time. The bottom line is, she was put in a nice clock choke and refused to tap, so she went out. End of.
Another noteworthy thing I’ve noticed on yet another viewing is the repositioning of Ono’s left leg in front of Yeats-Brown’s face. It could be just a coincidence, but perhaps the pressure on Brown’s head/neck was increased by Ono’s leg replacement, securing dominant pressure, forcing her into unconsciousness Either way, a very unique occurrence nonetheless.
Judo refs are an absolute joke when it comes to 'protecting' the judokas. I have seen so many of these types of endings where the judoka is laying unconscious because the ref failed to respond in time. Do we have to wait until someone suffers a serious brain condition to inact change?
This is all completely normal and safe. It just looks scary if you have never been in the situation before. It takes three to five minutes before one starts to suffer brain damage; the strangle was on for at most five seconds between the time she passed out and the end of the match. She was clearly still breathing and moving the entire time, and she woke up seconds after her coach got to her. They just kept her down for a while because she was confused. It's much nicer to be awakened slowly, right? For the refs... it is very common for a judoka to stop struggling for the last few seconds of a pin when it's hopeless. If this was a low-level or junior competition--and you see this more often at submission grappling events--they might have a rule that a competitor must always keep moving, and the ref might keep asking "are you ok?" the moment a technique is applied. But it doesn't make sense at a high level of judo.

In the early days of Judo. Pins were a submission hold. There was no time limit, you either escaped or surrender.

On the first pin are you saying she went out due to a pin with a choke incorporated in it or suffocated by the pin ??
