Sony has been making top-quality smartphones for longer than you might have realized, and to help jog your memory, we're going to take a look back at the part of its history that goes as far back as 2013 anyway. That's when the Sony Xperia Z arrived, and it marked one of many minor resets that the series has had down the years, with a tweaked design and new features to appeal to the masses. It's very different from today's phones, but it's still recognisable as a Sony Xperia. But people generally think that sony as a smartphone brand is failing, and it might be true looking at the figures. But considering the revenue side of things, sony’s smartphone unit revenue has increased significantly in the past 1-2 years. This is not just because of higher margins but also because people are buying more sony phones. So, how all of this is working all together that now sony has just flipped the coin from failure to profits.

Sony is always known for quality, that was their premise from the starting, even in the xperia era, their phones were high prices, but indeed the user interface was awersome, it felt premium to use those c4, c5 series, the customer care was superb too.

But Sony was best in the premium segment, even today their product has that quality, that user experience that no other brand can offer. Like their TVs, headphones, cameras.
Sony will grow further if they somehow manage to decrease the cost like samsung did it beautifully, they launched mobiles in the online market despite being offline first in those Xiaomi years, and they manage to do pretty well. Even today Sony is offline first, distribution cost a lot and thus the pricing

When samsung phones used to hang like anything, Sony used to make phones that never had any problems. I'm talking about 2012-2015 era.

I bought Sony Xperia XZ Premium in 2017, still runs perfectly with all the gaming I used to do daily, first 4k screen, slo-mo 960fps, 3d scanning, screen refresh rate was 60hz but the panel is rumoured to be 120hz, Sony never told us or activated it probably as it would drain the battery so fast with 4k 120fps "LCD" screen.
Same I'm also using xz premium 4 years ago
I can say sony products are much durable then other products. I have used so many products in my life. But the cost of any product now is too high.
They don't copy and follow the trend they got thier own style and character and very few people understand that and very less appreciate it.
Sony also sells sensors to xiaomi, samsung, and so many other mobile brands...it has kind of monopoly in sensor dept. Dont ignore that.

Sony xperia phones were built to last as they had very rigid quality with great camera setups, display, sound and operating system was great too! But I disagree with that fact that Sony wouldn't be able to survive in Indian market regardless of the active presence of budget smartphone brands like Xiaomi,Oppo,etc.
People still buy iPhone, Samsung S series or nowadays OnePlus series smartphones regardless of the price.
Proud owner of a Xperia Z2 (2014 to 2016) even i am using OnePlus today but still that Xperia Z2 is till date the best smart phone i ever used...
I still have Sony Xperia M4 aqua dual and years ago i used some great phones of Sony as well.They are one of the best looking and great performance phones at that time..specially the audio visual experience and camera was great! 👍🏻

Man! My dad bought the xperia m back in 2013 and it was essentially the first 'smartphone' in our home...cuz my dad had a nokia C2(one of those slide and touch type nokia phone) and mom used a nokia xpressmusic ... just that experience of not having to press any physical buttons for typing and getting to play games on a relatively bigger phone screen(by the standards of those days) as a 9-10 year old was so overwhelming for me and on top of all that the sketch app! the ms paint of Android...I remember taking my dad's phone after he came back from work in the evening just so I could click pictures of my family members only to draw and add funny and weird shapes and objects on them,those sticker packs in the app were basically low effort manual filters for our pics😂...it's just amazing how the market has evolved so much in almost a decade...from 4 gb of internal storage being just enough for some to now 4 gb of RAM being insufficient,from TFT displays being amazing to amoled becoming the standard,from 1750-2000 mAh battery being enough to 4500 being less ..man this is crazy!

BTW...that phone is still there in our home sitting inside a cupboard untouched since atleast the last 2-2.5 years(God knows if it'd even work now) but there's another xperia series device the c3 which still works okayish and i just turned it on yesterday but yeah the overall physical condition of that phone is not quite good to say the least

Just wanted to say this Sony has a loyal fan base since a long time. My first smartphone was Xperia C3 and, I still have it. And, second one which i am using right now to comment is Xperia Xz3 and, planning a new one from xperia 1or 5 series.

That was a really good analysis. I agree with most of of your points.. I just have a difference of opinion with regards to their enhancements and machinery cost... Nowadays almost every manufacturer are making just incremental updates year after year... I'm not saying Sony's enhancements are the best but it's better than most other brands.. If you check their enhancements on their xperia line for past 2-3 years.. they have made some pretty good and unique enhancements in terms of camera audio and gaming... Also added very innovative compatibility with their DSLR cameras... Ofcourse those are not for everyone.. so there has to be a decent machinery cost involved for those enhancements... But again as they are borrowing features from their other product line which does keeps the cost low but it still has to be a pretty decent cost... Also when Sony's flagship phone costs similar to Samsung's flagship.. those additional features are just added advantages... What I love about Sony is they don't go with features that are not practical to please the crowd like others... Sony never had a punch hole or notch display which is pretty much a gimmick... Instead they keep features like headphone jack and notification light which are more practical... Which other manufacturers ditch for cost cutting.... The fact that... Inspite of having a best selling Bluetooth headset they are still keeping the headphone jack is commendable!

Another idea of sony doing this is probabaly because sony is trying to create phones as reference designs for other manufacture so that they can buy sony internal part for themselves like most of the mobile camera sensors are of sony. So that traget audience of Sony is a very small niche of customer and big manufactures (B2B & B2C is covered).
This strategy of parts manufacturer creating a reference series end product is quite common in PC industry.

LG did pack-up their mobile phones business and leave, but I don't think they stopped support for their phones. In 2021 I bought a LG G8s ThinQ. It's manufacturing date is mid 2019 and I bought it in mid 2021. It was almost two years on the shelf. Even then the battery performs good.
It came with Android 9 out of the box. Updates started right when I started the phone and it got Android 10, very stable. Used to get security updates from time to time as well. 7-8 months into using the phone I got an Android update and the phone now runs on a stable Android 12 version.
Service centres are still functional and solve problems of customers. The only support or download server that they have switched off is their theme, UI customisation support.
The phone still works like a charm other than overheating during wireless android auto mode if the ac is off. That's the only problem with it literally.😄

Though Sony has never changed its design but its design is really very practical. The side besels just do not exist but there is little bit of a chin and the head. However these two contain extemely well tuned and precise front firing dual speakers which makes media consumption a treat as they are extremely loud.
Hello. I have been using LG phones for the past 4 years. Only last week I got my G8x updated to Android 12 and security Jun 2022. This is unusual for a 3 year old phone and more so after the LG has quit the mobile business. LG service was also very good compared to other companies. Hence, your comparison and comment on LG phone as it's closure may not be justified.

Sony is costly but has features which no other flagship phones have and trust the cost is worth it. I use 2019's Sony flagship and they are the best without a doubt.

Sony Phones were official partners with Call of duty mobile tournament last year. Sony will make a return. My last phone was Xperia U and my friend is still using Xperia Z5. Will definitely buy if Sony makes a return in India.
