Captured with the sleeper anamorphic adapter from GreatJoy, coupled with the very affordable Canon FD 35 to 105 zoom. Our favorite takeaway from this combo; the GreatJoy 1.35x Anamorphic Adapter improves the minimum focus distance of the Canon FD by 3ft!
Now don’t get us wrong, the Canon FD has a very useful Macro switch that allows you close focus capabilities that are very novel, but for conventional filming, I wouldn’t use this lens without it.
We upped the ante on the vintage character by adding Fog Filters in two different strengths, 1/4 and 2x. The Fog Filter, rather evidently, applies a uniform diffusion across the image, blooming light sources. This can be really helpful if you’re unable to use a hazer and for stretching the light gathering of your lens, albeit with some heavy commitments to the look.
Shot in 6K DCI for a 2.55:1 final de-squeeze on the Z-Cam E2-S6, ProRes 422 as the codec, and very light grade in Premiere.
For another look and to see Open Gate performance for a 2:1 de-squeeze, check out our BTS + Chill video.

What fog filters do you use? The ambiance is stunning.

We used Tiffen Double Fog and 1/4 Fog to test out just how hazy they might get. They were a cinch to use and helpful for when you can't run a hazer every 10 minutes. You get this great ambient swell on your fixtures but it is a full commitment filter; like a bloom filter only more intense and liberally applied to the entire image. In our BTS & Chill episode 4, you can see the 1/4 power filter in use on some of the wides. We also added a star filter and interchangeably a color streak filter. Basically, we were trying to break the image for a full-on vintage look lol.
