finally a band that covers a song and actually gives credit to the original singer/writer by letting John sing the last line, great cover and I'm sure John would have liked it. Green day gave the song a new meaning but I don't think that's bad, they used the song to make ppl aware of other problems in the world which is just as important
+letsHugElefanten You're absolutely right. This song was recorded a few years ago as a part of a John Lennon remembrance compilation called Instant Karma, which served as a benefit for amnesty international's attempts to help the crisis in Darfur (which is why the actually very real people with very real stories appear in this video). The songs weren't covered to benefit the bands, but to honor Lennon and what he stood for, and hopefully make the world a better place.
12 years late, in December 2018, People of Sudan revolted against the government. We MADE it and took them down. Those who were in charge of the genocide in Darfur are in jail now. Thank you Billie from the bottom of my heart, watching the music video left me in tears..
Idgaf what people think of Green Day, this is one of the greatest covers in the history of rock. I have unconditional respect for the members of the band. When they do something charitable, it comes from a real place, because they understand what it's like to grow up in poor households. It's never a PR thing with them. They help people not just because they care, but because they understand.
I don’t think that this song could’ve been covered better or treated with more respect than this one has been. I truly appreciate this song and this cover as well as this video. Lovely in the face of humanities ugliness.
This is one of the most touching music videos. I applaud Green Day for standing up for these people and donating money to their countries. No one deserves to live like that.
Same. It's 4am in the morning here. I just woke up and thought 'I need to hear that song'. The nostalgia, the reason for the cover, the amount my life has changed since first hearing this song (now married and have a son), Billie's haunting vocals, the music video and the way the world was back then (the world is still an ugly place but for different reasons now) it made me very emotional! I'm not going back to sleep now!
Definitely one of the best, if not THE best cover I've ever heard of a song. Billie's voice works amazingly with the instruments, and the Lennon in the end sends the best type of chills up my spine.
I prefer The man who sold the world - Nirvana (original by David Bowie) and Cat's in the cradle - Ugly kid Joe (original by Harry Chapin) but Working class hero is awesome too
This made me cry, I can almost feel their pain && I want to help so much! I am glad that there are bands like Green Day in the world to spread the reality of these individuals in these horrid situations.
This song is one of the best they have done. It should be played daily on the tv networks to open peoples eyes. its a very moving song. Wish i could end all the suffering and create peace in this world.
Billie Joe Armstrong: Vocals, Guitar. Mike Dirnt: Backing Vocals, Bass. Tré Cool: Drums. Jason White: Backing Vocals, Guitar. John Lennon (Fade Out): Vocals, Guitar.
I just heard this song for the first time since I was in 4th grade. I remember sneaking onto TH-cam at school by looking up hockey videos and getting onto it from those because the homepage was blocked, and then I'd listen to this song as I waited for a new album after American Idiot. Damn, time really does fly. Now I'm starting fucking college and typing a comment nobody gives a shit about XD No matter how you spend your time, just make sure your enjoying it.
For people complaining about the music video not matching the meaning of the song... It's a cover album that was recorded as a chairty to send funds out for the people in need in the middle east for war conflicts.
As soon as you're born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate if you're clever and despise a fool Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can't really function you're so full of fear A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV And you think you're so clever and classless and free But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be There's room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like all the folks on the hill A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be If you want to be a hero well just follow me If you want to be a hero well just follow me

John Lennon could guess the future music trends, true genius. I can hardly believe that this song is already more then 40 years written. I love this cover so much, thank you Greenday
The band I was fortunate to play with covered this song. I was a novice guitarist and this was one of the songs they taught me to play. Easy chords with a powerful jam and message. Thanks to John Lennon. 🎸🤘🏻
This song and lyrics will NEVER die! I've listened this cover since 2007 and as growing up goosebumps are getting more and more. JL Knew it well, we know it now ... love the ending "if u want to be a hero u just follow me" you didn't edited John's voice!

Thankyou youtube. I didn't know Green Day had done a cover of this song until now. And it rocks. Plus those people and quotes and this clip. Powerful stuff. Awe and vibrating bones with music that goes right me.
Of all the bands to cover this John Lennon message hitting song is green day and what an amazing job they've done, john would be proud, well done guys ✌️
This is the best cover of a classic rock song i've ever heard, it has the heaviness that the song needs, almost giving a new meaning to a song with the same lyrics, that's why Green Day is the best band since Blue Oyster Cult/Queen

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate if you're clever and despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like all the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
