  • We all a definition of what off grid looks like, some hidden away cabin not dependent on any pubic infrastructure, but I argue that it’s all but impossible to live like that any more. And really, why should we? The available equipment and gear allows us to live better ‘off grid’, regardless of our definition…

There are many more options to help prepare for events now. I like when the gird goes down. It makes things quiet for a bit and gives us a chance to appreciate all of the luxuries that we take for granted. Definitely a nice little setup you have there.

Great video Jeff. Great words of advice for anyone who would like ideas on stored energy for power outages. 😎👍

I got into solar as a hobby from living out here in the middle of farm land. Our power goes out ALL THE TIME. I got tired of generators, the noise, messing with gas etc. Solar is a huge part of prepping. On top of that you don't have to let solar sit around doing nothing until a power outage. We use our off grid system to run the fridge 24/7...While electricity is relatively cheap I can still bank a savings by using it.

I’ve installed dozens, maybe hundreds of solar systems on vans when I was in the automotive industry, the technology is way better now and so is the price point. I don’t understand why every new home isn’t made to install a back up system by code?

Great job Jeff. Enjoy your channel. Being ready is so smart. Solar energy is so interesting. I purchased a large converter and installed in my van. It works great. I think it’s 3000 watts have a great week sir.

    Good video. Thank you.
Just a few comments if you’re interested.
I’ve been living off grid for over 7 years. For the past 14 years I have been designing and installing off grid systems for dozens and dozens of happy customers all across Canada. And trust me these folks are off grid. No utility power. Wood heat. Gas cook stove. Some have wind backup that we installed and many have a generator backup. Living “off-grid” in most circles/conversations means you don’t have utility power. If you mean living off grid as not interacting with the internet, not having a cell phone, and not having a “finger print” or presence online, then thats different and many can’t say they’re off grid in that respect for sure.
There are big problems coming in the near future. People aren’t prepared. Most I know aren’t. They have a small pantry with a week or so worth of food. They don’t have anything for comms when the grid and cell service goes down. They don’t have anything to collect or purify water, they don’t have a clue on what’s coming. And we aren’t even talking about Biblical end times stuff that’s right around the corner.
    Jus sayin…

    Hi Jeff!!😀😀
You definitely have a great system for keeping the lights on.
Even though we live in the middle of nowhere. Our power is pretty reliable. Unless we have a bad storm or a car accident. Our power is always on.
2 years ago we had a bad storm that took out the power for 3 days. So I had to break out my Miller welder generator. It was luckily big enough to run the whole house and keep us on the grid.
    Take care my friend!!😀😀💚

I’d love to find a big portable welder…

I’ve got the same 2 Yamaha generators. I plug the big one in my panel and fridge, lights, tv, internet, and water pump work. We were out of power 5 days last winter. All ok because I get space and water heat from wood. Those little battery units look much more quiet. Probably nice during the night for sleeping.

The one thing you cannot easily convert from 240v to 120v with grid down, is a well pump.
Anything else is one way or another capable of being done with 120v or no electricity at all.
    .
People don't realise the value of a flushing toilet tell they don't have one. My typical 20/30 hour grid down events its very much a blessing to have full gravity water to the house.
    .
I've saved a tremendous amount of fuel by going to inverter generators. Literally paid for it in fuel savings, over 10 years.
    .
A wood fired oven/stovetop is probably my next step.
