- Well, it's finally here: our official home tour! A couple weeks ago, we moved into a 100-year-old cottage in the Appalachian Mountains in Western North Carolina, and we're finally ready to show you around. Our property is just a little over two acres and moving forward, we plan to begin a simple, homesteading life for our family. Some words to describe our future life: farmsteading, backyard chickens, permaculture gardening, home renovation, cottage core, and simple, country living.

I dont know how i stumbled upon your story but to be honest I am glad i did. I cannot stand over the top videos about people who are self serving and fake. You are completely refreshing and genuine. You dont try to win public attention because being yourselves is proving enough. There is a powerful energy that seems to permeate through the screen. I was married to my ex-partner at Mountain Light Sanctuary, a beautiful commune in Western North Carolina, way back in 2006. I spent 13 years in WNC with my ex. We then moved to the northern Appalachians, in Vermont (of course, where they are called the Green Mountains and the White Mountains--in New Hampshire). I've lived in this run of Mountains since moving to southern West Virginia, then Northern West Virginia (Charleston, Montgomery, WV, then Morgantown, WV), where West Virginia University is. I spent 10 years in WV. I fell in love with the Appalachians and the people of Appalachia. This is perfect for you all. Beautiful.
So wonderful - wishing your family all the very best for the time to come in your new home. Just a thought - as I am somewhat familiar with the "southern mountains".. I noted that your open patio is right next to that small stream. Given the instability of our weather systems these days, in a torrential downpour, or worse, that stream could quickly become a destructive torrent... I'm sure you have a zillion things you want to work on around the place, but it might be prudent to build some type of low, rock/cement (?) wall near the area where the patio corner intersects the stream bank. During a period of extremely high water flow, the wall might help deflect the water away from the patio and the foundation of the house. And a natural stone wall would certainly blend in well with your absolutely adorable home - just love it!! Blessings to one and all - this day, and always...

You three are living the dream with that piece of property. What a beautiful and majestic scene to wake up to and come home to every day. The home has a really nice and practical floorpan. I am in love with the window seat in the dining room. So much opportunity there for sure. I think you can do a lot with that bed in Uma's room. Every princess needs a carriage. What a fun tour and great space to call your own. Looking forward to see what you all do with it.

I cringed at “100yo house” but I don’t really see anything that looks 100. Seems like it is a gem and recently updated.
This video came at the exact time when I needed it with the uncertainly of being an Educational Assistant in Ontario right now, It brought a sense of peace into my life for even a short bit and reminded me to breath and take in the beauty of life which in return reminds me why I love my job and students.
Love the house and how when you are inside you feel like you are still part of the outside and the yard surrounding the house is gorgeous and peaceful

There is truly something magical about the Appalachian Mountains I live on the other side in East TN in a small rural town on the lake the area behind my house is totally wooded.

Beautiful home and environment. I'm sure you'll make it your own. Noticed a red fox in one of the pictures. So watch out for the kitten being outside. But enjoy having the 4 walls again so you guys can set a true foundation for Uma and those close to you. Stay safe and spread your wings and plant lots of fruit trees so you can make lots of jams and jellies
Maybe they can dig a root cellar since they don’t have a basement … to store the bounty of canned fruits and veggies etc as they homestead over the seasons!
Thanks for the advice. I gotta ask: where did you see the fox? We didn't even notice. 😳 Regardless, we plan to have the kittens stay indoors; that way we can continue building a safe habitat for the birds outside.
I was looking into how to build a root cellar a couple weeks ago!
@THE DURT FAMILY it was right at the base of the surbs in your first outside tour. Looks like a cub maybe 5 months old. That type of fox is pretty tame and can be domesticated easily. But they are wild animals and will attack birds, squirrels, chickens and household pets. You can plant things like mint, lavender and wolf bane which will keep they away from the house because the foxes, deers, skunks don't like the smell. Or you can attempt to domesticate them by place water dishes and food dishes at the base of trees. However you'll need to remind Uma that their wild animals and may bite.

They are so much filled with character and history as well. Uma bed would look nice and more like a princess with that white flowing material coming from the top. Just an idea. The area behind the cottage where you can have a Fire and be with nature in all aspects. Homesteading is all about HOME. Always let it be home first. Here in Switzerland up in the mountains people are basic and live that way. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the place. Wow you guys hit the jackpot with this property! I know cause I have been land hunting in WNC for several months now...this is a special spot! My partner and I have the same goals and moved to the area earlier this year, which reminds me so much of my homeland of the mountains of Vermont. I wanted to suggest that y'all follow Acre Homestead on youtube if you don't already. She does an epic garden every spring and summer and spends the fall and winter preserving and cooking up a storm. Becky recommends learning how to preserve food first before getting into gardening because that way you aren't too overwhelmed with learning both at the same time, come your first big harvest. We are still saving for our homestead so I've begun the process of learning to preserve food by freezing and canning and hope to add in a freeze drier and dehydrator in the future. Can't wait to see your next video in a couple of months and super excited for the home renovations part! Hope you guys have the best time settling into your sanctuary!

Western nc is so beautiful! My husband and I live on the eastern side of the state on a 43 acre farm a little less than an hour from the coast and love it but it is admittedly not nearly as pretty as your part of the state!the new place is lovely and although I don’t even know you I am incredibly happy for you and your family! Thanks for the tour and the vision you have. For Ms. Uma's bed (which is super cute) it could be fun to have some sheer fabric draped over the top of the carriage with perhaps some fairly lights. Something along those lines would be sweet for a young child such as her. Just an idea.
