    Episode Notes:
    1. All games captured on the Mega SG.
    2. Traveller's Tales also did Toy Story from the first video. Those people really could program well for the Genesis.
    3. Shadow Dancer is one of the few games I actually prefer the console version of. The arcade was good, the Genesis version is great.
    4. I was always a big fan of the Genesis hardware, even after the SNES showed up. The Genesis still had its own look and feel that stood the test of time well. Even when it was aged well past its prime, it still managed to impress.
    5. A few of these games have Sega CD variants with even more content. Puggsy, Mickey Mania, and Out of this World spring to mind. There is also a Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast, but it's much less impressive there.

      yea those lost world graphics are unreal. along with stuff like gunstar heroes, alien soilder, contra hard corps, sonic 3 and knuckles, etc. are we sure the genesis is 16 bit? it seems more 24 bit to me graphically anyway. the complex bosses and tricks it can do are crazy. the cpu is OP as ffffk. the sound leaves a lot to be desired (this coming from a guy the prefers the snes cause of it;s library, but graphically the genny has the edge. though rendering ranger r2 might be the best looking 16 bit game cause the insane action onscreen with no slowdown and level 7, but it's debatable) but normally genesis is just stronger graphically. like how in the fffk can it pull off those lost world graphics, or Panorama cotton, batman and robin, and tons of other example. the CPU is a bully

      It's certainly impressive but I remember playing the original on a PC with a 286 which ran at 10mhz. So, it's not as crazy to port as say Doom. It's really the ram requirements that get me. The original requires 500kb something on of ram. The Genesis had like 70 something. Also the PC install was 3mb for the shareware version alone. Shaving everything down was a great accomplishment. It's something that feels like it should have existed at the time.

    • @davidaitken8503
      @davidaitken8503 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are beyond delusional. The arcade uses textured 3D polygons. Lost World on the Genesis makes clever use of some 2D image trickery in a restrictive way that couldn't possibly replicate any aspect of the arcade.

    • @mr.vidjagamez9896
      @mr.vidjagamez9896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@davidaitken8503 thats why I said port. I do not expect anywhere close to arcade likeness, but you could still do a decent home equivalent using the style the special stages presented. The part with the rex chasing you in Lost World could very well be worked into a console quality equivalent of the rex chases in the arcade original. Thats like saying TMNT 2 on the NES shouldn't exist just because it is nowhere close to the arcade original its based off of. Throw in Menacer support and I think Sega themselves could have put together a satisfying little home version, even more so if you factor in the 32X.

      If I remember correctly the effect of having seemingly partial transparency on the water (something not supported by the Mega Drive hardware which didn't have color blending) was achieved by changing the color palette at the correct time when outputting the scan lines. Which is why sprites like Sonic could be partially in the water and have the correct color shift for only that part of the sprite. Very clever work. Check the channel "Coding Secrets" for some interesting info on Mega Drive and Saturn tricks used in such games, including Mickey Mania and Sonic 3D Blast.

Traveller's Tales were mastering the hardware while always trying to push the Mega Drive further with more impressive visual effects. Mickey Mania, Toy Story, Sonic 3D... I wished Sega would’ve focused more on the genesis hardware and squeeze the hell out of it, instead of investing money on the Sega cd or 32x. That’s what Nintendo did with the snes and they succeeded. I’m sure we could’ve had Doom on the genesis. Great video as always. Hands down, this is currently my favorite channel!

      Carlos i strongly recommend investing some time in the sega cd, a very underrated, and powerful system. You need to check out batman returns, sonic cd, and shining force cd in paricular. Or konami's killer game snatcher, trust me, theres plenty of games showing just how good the sega cd was.

      I think there's ultimately only so much you can do with a system, but they definitely could have supported it for a little bit longer. The major reason the SNES had such long legs was the fact that they designed the system/cart interface to support add-in chips from day one - many of the most well known games made use of add-in chips that enabled the console to do things that never would have been possible on base hardware (this of course made certain games more expensive). Given how compromised the 32x port of Doom was (whether this was due to the hardware itself or dev constraints is up for debate), it's very dubious the Genesis would be able to handle Doom - the few FPS available on Genesis use engines that sit right around Wolfenstein 3D (fixed height, minimal lighting, no ceiling/floor texture, minimal objects) tech level, with just a passable framerate.

    • @yellowblanka6058
      @yellowblanka6058 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Daishin no Dōro Oh, you'll get no argument from me there, I'm just saying that there's no way the base Genesis could handle Doom - even WITH the fastest variant of the FX chip, Doom on SNES was a nearly unplayable mess. Zero Tolerance works because it works within the limitations of Genesis hardware - no floor or ceiling textures, no varying heights/stairs etc, it's FAR less sophisticated than something like Doom, and in terms of number of sprites/objects onscreen, probably inferior to Wolfenstein 3D.

    • @yellowblanka6058
      @yellowblanka6058 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Daishin no Dōro Yeah, it was a game designed around expensive PC hardware, it was a miracle it released on SNES at all, even with the aid of an add-on chip. There wouldn't be a decent version of Doom on consoles until the PS1/N64 releases.

    Hey love your videos and glad to see someone appreciated Shinobi series. I was always a fan of the parallax stuff. I do have a suggestion. Xmen 2 Clone Wars has some great parallax along with nice sprite presentation. The stage with the aliens base is a cool stage. THere's tons of parallax on that one. I mean the whole game itself needs more love Hopefully you will cover that in the near future. Not sure if you did Troubleshooter, or trouble shooting, cant recall the name right now, but that one is a great shooter with cool effects.

    In Shadow of the beast (1) there is a teleportation device in the first level which has an effect of which i first thought that my Megadrive was breaking down.
    And Soleil (crusader of Centy) is chockfull of great visual effects, especially at the boss fights (the background when facing of against the dragon in Heaven is incredible).

Usually the super nes is praised for the FX chip but its incredible to see what the genesis was capable of without any additional processing power... and with older hardware!! Better than the famous FX chip SNES titles in my opinion. Cheers from Brazil!

    Growing up kids/classmates etc. when we did the console wars stuff tended to underrate the Genesis' visual prowess. Sure SNES had Mode7, but the Genesis could hold its own and had some amazing feats of hardware pushing visuals

      I hate to break the news to you, but the SNES could do those "hardware pushing visuals" too. Some of those effects can actually be done on the NES. Most of them have less to do with processing power and more to do with clever programming.

    • @happyspaceinvader508
      @happyspaceinvader508 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      David Aitken The SNES’s CPU ran at less than half the speed of the Genesis’s, so was less capable of pulling off software-based effects. That’s why they had to rely more on additional chips in the cartridges.

    Genesis is just so versatile. We know the snes is a great machine and what we expect of it is high and it delivers, but the genesis, in the right hands never stops surprising me. People just always seem to be able to get more and more out of it.

  • @TheStolken
    @TheStolken 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    An excellent showcase! It's good to see people using that CPU to its fullest, one of the genesis' biggest strengths. I think Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 should probably be looked at next time, because the way they were able to import the graphics on the genesis are stunning, as well as keep all the animation frames in EWJ1's case. But the pseudo 3d of Andy Asteroids and the very complex scrolling in EWJ2's Puppy Love would make for a fun section.

    Splatterhouse 2 level 7 The Void. After freeing Jennifer, you escape with all the skulls in the background and a big blue guy chasing you is still the best visuals I have seen on the Sega Genesis.
