For the Blacky' designed Build Your Weapon pedals go here: bywaudio.com/
Great info from Blacky' on his setup: "Me for NF, Marshall Superbass 1972 (bought used after I got my 76 stolen in the early days after we had just moved form Jonquiere to Montreal in 1986-87) with preamp mod so I didn't need the power soak anymore. The cab was custom design with 4 - 15inch EV 300 watts each 16 ohms. Mic was a 421 direct into a 1081 and an active DI line going into a tubeworks 902 from realtube to a ISA 110 for the clean low end tone. I used my first Liberatore a 1986 with two Dimarzio P bass pickup, one neck the other bridge, depending on the track I could switch each pickup with mini toggle switches with of course a Kahler tremolo bridge with rearward saddles which I didn't used much just to end track sometime. This was my first straight through neck bass, it was almost build right away the first time I met Mauro, I asked him if he could build for me a bass with my own design, I had brought him my current bass at the time which had a cheap neck screwed, one of those that Piggy's dad got cut for us. At first, his dad made piece of wood with great ash which Piggy ask of his own specifics, so we could draw our shape designs directly on them, after he would cut the shape for us back at the shop. Piggy got his flying-V shape one and me that same one for my 86 Liberatore. My first bass was a white El Degas precision copy still in great shape today, a friend of mine has it.
The five strings 1989 came after NF was recorded. On the five string (Angel Rat) I have two active EMG J model on 18v, no pre-amp, just two toggle switch on-off.
My first Marshall Super Bass 1976 that I bought even before Voivod really start in 83, got stolen in 86 with Piggy's old Marshall as well. That's the one that I used with the power soak that melted (because I was putting it side ways, the soldering were falling off one day, that was funny, I was of course able to soldered it back in place) I also had to have a fan on all the time, so I made a hole on the side and put in a 120v 5in fan, because the thermal protection would just got off all the time. Some basic maintenance was often required. Like putting new resistors on the tube sockets, they would just fried."

Bro I’m just finding this video 3 years late but I loved it. Loved your dirty tone in the opener, too; just about perfectly executed - the idiotbox Blower Box is (of course) just plain made for that sound. And I have to say I am *also* a huuuuge fan of Angel Rat. Cheers! -Dave from The Bass Channel

Love Blackie's bass rig and tone. I can confirm the wear of strings you can do in a day - after I recorded a full album's worth of bass tracks in 9 hours those strings went from brand new and bright to absolutely dead. They felt like a year old strings within a matter of hours.

I used to play my Gibson Blackbird in a 300W Ampeg SVT-Classic and 8x10 cab using the IdiotBox effects Blower Bass pedal. My tone was very similar to Blacky's but there were also hints of Tom Angelripper's bass on Persecution Mania.

So glad to see the VoiVod love!
The first time I heard Tribal Convictions back in the summer of '88, it changed my life. I couldn't listen to other metal in the same way anymore, and a lot of it I just couldn't take seriously anymore either, musically or artistically. Not every album is great, but the ones that are, lawd lawd. Even knowing now where so many of Piggy's influences came from (Stravinsky, ELP, King Crimson, etc), it still doesn't take anything away from how original his music was.
I admit, I hated Angel Rat when it first came out, but after Piggy died I went back and learned all the albums and gave it another listen, and now I love it as much as the rest.

“Runs like a blower! Eats like a grinderrrrrr!”
Blacky! They definitely arrived on earth from a Morgoth space cannon. An unstoppable force. When I started playing bass in a band Blacky was prob my biggest inspiration. Didn’t ever try a Marshall guitar head though. How does that setup sound playing “Overreaction”?
A Piggy episode? Love him. Looking forward to that. He’s in a league all his own. Don’t forget the toy space gun. He’d hold it up to the pickups and blast it. It was a regular live thing but in not sure that it made it into any records though.

I saw Voivod on the Nothingface tour in a small rock club in Chapel Hill NC. Believe it or not, Soundgarden opened for Voivod! (Louder Than Love had just come out.) Best show I ever saw. I was there to see Voivod and didn't even know who Soundgarden were yet, but they blew the roof off the place. Unfortunately, more than half the audience left when they finished, so they missed an amazing performance from Voivod. I'd had Nothingface on heavy rotation for a couple weeks, so I knew it well -- and the live performance was like listening to the CD.
Wish I remembered more about the gear. I do recall Blacky having a very impressive rack setup with plenty of flashing lights 😁... Not sure if he was still using the Marshall amps. There was so much in that rack, there was definitely room for rack mount pre-amps, power amps, and plenty of effects... As a bass player, I was very impressed by his heavily overdriven but still controlled and distinct tone. The bottom wasn't lost either.

So much variety and quality in Voivod works. They touch so many style that wherever you’re interested in a music style (or a few styles like all big music lovers) you are going to need more listening depending on the album. And unlike most other bands, bicker can come from radical music style changes from lp to lp rather than quality, which is quite stable throughout their career. Really gifted musicians. I am just wondering how 4 top nutch musicians can come from a small city of under a 100,000 residents. And fit so well together. Voivod rules!

Allone the obsession of changing or washing strings often is a sign he used roundwound strings. Because on flatwounds this wouldn't be necessary.
There are three stages in the life of a roundwound bass string.
    1. Brand new they have a high end spike some players like. 2. After a short time, about 30 minutes, this spike flattens out, the strings have a consistent tone over some hours.
    3. This will be 15 - 20 playing hours.
After this time the strings loose a lot of high end, their tone gets dull and dead.
This happenes because skin, grease and sweat comes into the wire, dampening the harmonics and high end, they just do not vibrate as they did when new.
If you keep them on your bass any longer they may start to rust.
If you wipe your strings down every time after playing, you prolong the live span of your strings.
If they are "dead" without beeing rusty you can save some more hours of playing if you cook your strings in water with some drops of dishwashing detergent and wipe them dry after cooking.
To get the grease and skin particles off the strings some people take a cloth with alcohol on it and rubb the strings off. It may help, I can't tell for sure, never did this.
Flatwounds on the other hand have a closed surface where skin and grease can't come in. After they have lost their high end spike, the tone stays literally the same until they break. Flatwounds never will sound as brilliant as roundwound strings. Flatwound afficionados say, that flatwounds have to be worn in and sound even better when played a lot.
Back in the days flatwound strings had not a lot high end, but a lot of "thud". Today there are flatwounds with a distinguished high end, like Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats or Fender Cromes.
I recommend Elixir Nanoweb roundwound nickel strings, I use this strings for about 15 years now. This strings are sealed through a nanoweb you do not notice while playing, and they hold the roundwound tone for much longer than uncoated strings.
I had to change strings often, maybe because I seem to have quite aggressive sweat, although I wipe my strings down with a cloth after playing every time.
I had to change uncoated strings either every two weeks or before every gig, just what occured earlier, but now I am able to keep the strings on my basses until they break. In some occasions I had them longer than 2 years on basses, they have not changed their tone from the first day.

I boil my used strings after a week or so of use, rotating new sets with used sets. Boiling for 15 minutes, then drying by wiping down and air dry for 30 minutes, then I put them in the freezer for a day or so. When they come out I let them sit for 30 minutes then wipe them down to remove any condensation. Then reuse. Works for about 3 times.

Voivod are progressive in all the good senses of the term without all the negative connatations. Bands can be over sanitised when everything is mixed down. Thats why listening to the guys is so refreshing. There's an anarchic sort of freedom actually integral to the performances. Proper rockin the chaos factor, but keeping it cohesive. I would love it if you did Matt Freeman's tone from ...And Out Come The Wolves. I'm sure it's probably basic but the guy is the best bassist in the entire punk genre and being able to know how to get a sound like what you hear on Maxwell Murder or Journey to the End of East Bay would be phenomenal.

Speaker excursion is the issue when playing bass through guitar cabs.
They can handle the power, they can't drive the low frequencies properly.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

How do you explain 9 string djent guitars? Modern speakers have an adequate amount of low freqs for recording bass. You can argue on most djent albums you can hardly hear the bass but the bass is there via the guitars.

    • @vorpalblades
      @vorpalblades 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Bass frequencies are an octave lower.
Look at the voice coil of a bass 12" compared to a guitar 12".
      Much larger diameter, greater excursion.
You play a decent bass amp through them they don't last.
They also build up too much heat with an undersized voice coil.
