The main problem with the "Squad" Joker is that he kept trying to rescue Harley.
One of the main points of Joker/Harley's disfunctional relationship is that Harley will do *anything* for Joker...and Joker will do *nothing* for her, unless it happens to be something he's doing (usually, Bat related) and she's "on the way."

Joker is a passionate person. Joker being passionate for Harley does not ruin his character. Its a change from the comics, but those don't have to be bad and the comics themselves change over time in each retelling. This isn't the Heath Ledger version of the Joker, its a Joker more like the Jack Nicholson Joker who is capable of having a gang, not killing all of them without reason because Chaos... The Joker/Harley relationship from the comics and TV series always left a bad taste in my mouth as too much. In a lot of ways Heath Ledgers Joker is great in a one shot movie, but who in their right mind would choose to work with/for that Joker? Leto is building a Joker that is unpredictable, but capable of building long term alliances.

Jared Letos joker has tattoos that basically say “I’m insane” and he wears metal teeth, and drives a super car. Goes to clubs, and wears jewelry. None of those traits relate to the actual joker. #longliveheath

Just wanted to point out the club scene. The tattooed guy makes a comment about Harley, we see Joker make a face (along with a weird editing visual cue), and then Joker offers Harley to the man. It was clear to me, that the joker, for whatever reason, was irked by the comment, and put the man in a no win situation. He takes Harley, it shows he is willing to take another man's woman, he refuses her (as he does) he is insulting the Jones's generosity. A no win situation like that was very Joker esque. At least to me.

Heath Ledger's Joker was very dark, cunning, and anarchic.

Jared Ledo's Joker was gangster, unstable, and cynical.

    • @williamspears1627
      @williamspears1627 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Exactly. Jared Leto's interptretation of the Joker is an unstable, megomaniac who will do whatever to takes to get his way. He IS a force a nature: The nature of impulse, and impatience. ALL of his scenes from the movie exemplify this: He tries to free Harley Quinn 3 times, and succeeds on the third try. Each time he barely thinks things through. He impulsively kills a gangbanger after impulsively offering Harley Quinn to him. When the Joker crashes, he impulsively swims away and leaves Harley behind, only to regret this later. This version of Joker is very well defined and if we get an extended edition, hopefully this will become more clear to the general public.

I loved Jared Leto's Joker and I didn't think Suicide Squad was a bad movie at all. I'm not sure why it got so many terrible reviews. It was way better than Thor 2 or Batman vs. Superman, or even Avengers 2. I saw Suicide Squad as an introduction to those characters for people who don't read comic books. Nicholson was horrible as the Joker, Ledger was awesome but lacked the sense of whimsy the Joker often has, while I thought Leto got the mix right. With the Joker, you can never really ask, 'to what end?' because the 'end' makes sense only in his insane mind.
I saw this movie as a jumping off point for the Joker in future films with Batman or one featuring a more in-depth story about the Joker and Harley Quinn's relationship- even a second Suicide Squad. I think a lot of the problem was in the advertising. The Joker is not one of the main characters in Suicide Squad, so I did not expect to see much of him in it, while all of the advertising focused very heavily on the Joker, so by the time you see the film almost all of his scenes had already been shown in the trailers. Had they made it clear that the Joker was to have a smaller role viewers would have known it going in and might not have been as disappointed.

Heath Ledger I think is the worst Joker ever because he works like a villain but not as a Joker. The Joker has to be 50% mad and 50% funny and charismatic and Nolan made him 100% crazy and Leto made him about 80% crazy but he still felt like the Joker and Ledger didn't.

He's unrealistic and flat, as a character. Heath Ledger made him a believable character.

Danielle Merriweather just because "it's something new" doesn't make it a good interpretation. Joker has changed a lot over the years with Mark hamill, Jack Nicholson, Troy baker, and Heath ledger they were all different interpretations but they all kept the same spirit of the joker. Letos interpretation is too modernized and he doesn't feel as natural in his acting. Heath ledger spent days and hours writing in his notebook learning how to be crazy he internalized that behavior. Leto just felt like someone working at a haunted house just kinda acting random because that's his job

Not fair to compare Ledger's Joker to Leto's for 3 reasons.
    1. Heath's Joker was the big bad of TDK. He was the driving force behind the plot.
    2. Ledger's Joker had almost 3x more screen time.
    3. Ledger's Joker, like Bale's Batman, is a more comic book inspired character, than adapted. Look at the DCEU, characters are very much adapted from the comics. Some have the odd change but mostly they're the same.
I liked what I saw from Leto, except a few things. Like his snorting when he'd look at that dude. Or his blank stare at times. Joker is supposed to be very emotive. Ultimately, it's really not fair to say you hated a character that had fuck all to do with the plot and fuck all screen time. If he's in the Batfleck solo movie, and he's the main villain, then we can decide if he's good or bad.

If they wanted to make him a gangster while still keeping him like the Joker, they should have given him a dark purple suit, and make him act like Tommy from Goodfellas. David Ayer made him what people THINK gangsters are like, but real gangsters are intimidating, well dressed men who can get in your head, and Jared Leto would’ve been GREAT at that role, whereas this Joker just seems like somebody who’s trying to be in an Eminem music video

As someone who loves both dc and marvel. The dc movies do not feel as if they are trying to compete at all, the term is cannibalization. someone comes up with an innovative formula, like Moba games for example.
Then a bunch of other developers make their own take, some worse, some better.
DC isn't trying to perfectly mimic marvel, they are doing their own thing.

My thoughts on Leto's portrayal of The Joker is that the directors have no idea what the fuck they are doing. I don't mind the actor for the part, but they fucked it up. First of all he looks like a gangster, which is different and I have no problem with it, but if your trying to please the masses, you've already dug yourself a hole. Second of all he isn't even that crazy, The Joker I know would've beaten the man with a crowbar or stiletto knife in that club scene, aka been a lot more brutal. Third of all, the relationship between Harley and The Joker was absolute horse shit in this movie, its not a romance, its more of a super dysfunctional, ALMOST one sided relationship. Fourth, if he's crazy enough to tattoo every inch of his body and put a damaged tattoo on his forehead, why the hell does he have a clean hairstyle and dress normally. Surely he should look a lot scruffier (same clothes, but maybe a size too big, not properly put on and old and worn, plus his hair should be more

the joker with all these accessories didnt make sense in the film because all the back story of the joker and how he became to be like that was deleted. the grills are because batman almost beat the joker to death knocking out all his front teeth, the tattoos have been seen in past comics on the joker, "the dragon" and the smile on his hand was so batman would never forget what he did to him as he couldnt smile the same ever again. if they had of added all of this back story it would of moulded the film and this version of the character in a much more favourable light

+Harper Productions I understand what they were going for, I just don't feel it was pulled off well. Felt too much like they were trying to reinvent the wheel and totally missed the mark. I was glad to hear initially that they had no intention of trying to mimic what Nolan did with Ledger, and I have alot of faith in Leto's acting. I just think the attempt to make The Joker feel more modern made him very un-Jokerish.

Sure Jared’s joker was more of a lunatic but keep in mind that there was ALL kinds of jokers for example. Heath ledgers has a drunk dad that carved a smile into his face. Jared’s Joker is the version where he falls into the acid. The joker isn’t necessarily ONE version of joker they are all different so they will all act different.

This movie put Joker/Harley with other villains (2 of which die) vs Enchantress and has lead to sub-Joker thoughts of Jarrod Leto!

I actually found Heath's scenes much scarier. It has something to do with slightly irritatingly long (in a good/bad mesh sort of way) score Hans Zimmer composed for his "Wanna know how I got these scars?" moments. And even then, is "scary and unpredictable" ALL it takes to be the Joker? The Joker, to me, is more nuanced than Suicide Squad would have you believe. Heath Ledger actually showed an understanding of the Joker's philosophy and psyche. He's a clown who wants to prove to Batman that the world can easily be as corrupted as he is. Leto's Joker just shows that the filmmakers understood "The Joker is a clown who kills people and is crazy. See? We understand the character!"

No, terrible point. A movie is a culmination of a bunch of puzzle pieces being put together, now sometimes that can make a beautiful picture but sometimes one of the puzzle pieces is missing, or is the wrong piece for this puzzle. Jared Leto's Joker was (at least in my opinion) not well played, regardless of how many lines he had or what they were or how long he was in it. If one of the background "artistes" was running around in circles when he was supposed to be running away from an explosion, that would add to the negatives of a movie. Speaking as someone who has worked on movies I know that things need to run as a well oiled machine, every actor has to do their part and Jared Leto took this in the wrong direction I think.

  • @JoshTheAmazingAnimator

I'm planning on looking into the comics actually, my dad's an avid reader and enjoyed this new Joker. I'll openly admit I wasn't really huge on DC comics beyond the animated series and the movies prior to this. So I do have a little background in it.
And I'm not saying he's the best, he wasn't, we all know that. That spot goes to Ledger. I'm just saying he was good for the Joker he was portraying. And I personally found it pretty enjoyable, but lacking from there being so little of him. Hell, I haven't side-by-sided the screentime, but I've heard people saying he gets more screentime in Purple Lambrogini than in the movie...So there's really not enough to get a feel for him.

    Besides poor directing and editing.
Leto's joker failed because Leto has too much ego.
His ego works for his music career and other characters he's played.
A good Joker has no ego. And Joker definitely doesn't have Leto's ego.

+MizzReyRey he wasn't the Joker in this movie. Just seemed like someone dressed up as the Joker.
And it's exactly how this dude explains in the video, not a fully realized or driven character.
In some scenes he seems fucking ballistic, and then others a caring lover for Harley Quinn.
When in reality the character never cares THAT much for Harley Quinn. He uses and abuses her to get what he needs and when he doesn't he just lets her go.
I understand comic to movie adaptation and interpretation. But it just seemed so random and inconsistent throughout this movie his attraction and attention towards Harley.
Ledger, which I find to be the perfect Joker as he did a different take on Joker, a far more sinister and scary take while also keeping it true to character by referencing The Killing Joke a bit, he has a more consistent way of doing what he did.
He made plans, he went through with them, he wanted to play around with the bat and he wanted to show batman that "one bad day" can turn even the best of us into cold-hearted criminals, which is what the Joker in the killing joke attempted to do with Gordon.
Jared, I personally did like. I just didn't like that he had no consistent character. He offers Harley to a gangster, then gets overly jealous and shoots him in the head, for what reason? No reason necessary, and he just begins driving like a madman, then leaves her to die, then he was actually looking for her endlessly?
I am waiting until he has his real solo film against Batman to actually give out judgment. But what I got from this take on the Joker, is that he is all too human vs being just a force of nature, which is what Heath was.
Jared gets a 7/10 for his Joker and how he made that awful script work. But.. I hope he gets more time.

MizzReyRey While Jack Nicholson's joker feels a little antiquated in this day and age, I would still place him miles above this particular interpretation. It just feels like all style (-and terrible style at that) and no substance. But that goes for the entire Suicide Squad movie, to be honest. I think I may have had marginally less trouble with this Joker if it wasn't for the ridiculous tattoos, the lack of eyebrows and the god-awful rims. Although that wouldn't change the fact that he just didn't strike me as a force to be reckoned with.

+Rogelio Rocha I understand and respect that seeing as it was the original relationship of the two characters, but in suicide squad they change the relationship and personally I think it works and would love to see a film about their love. I know it's down to personal opinion and I also believe it's down to how well they wanted the film to do. A lot of the audience look up to the characters seeing as they are both 'beautiful people' as to say and it most likely gave the film a lot of its popularity, not everyone will ever be happy though so you just need to respect the choices the film made.
