  • Do you remember the Original Star Wars Trilogy?
And by Original, I mean without any of the altered or added features.
In today's video, we take a look at what I believe is the ONLY way to watch the original Star Wars Trilogy, in its original Theatrical Release Format.
This is the reason why I bought Star Wars on DVD in 2023.
    Did you know about this?
How do you feel about all the alterations the franchise has been through?
where do you draw the line on what is acceptable and what is ruining things?
Please let me know in the comments below!

Physical copies that we should definitely backup ourselves digitally, because you can never predict if something bad will happen to them.
It's also probably inevitable that one day, they'll be "worth" too much more than they should be, just like old sealed games.
And when we'll need a replacement, we might not enjoy the prices we'll find.

I managed to get my hands on some Blu-Ray copies of Harmy's Despecialized through "totally legal" means. And I'm so glad. Even though they're only 720p, they still look so much better than the 2011 Blu-Rays, and they have these incredible bonus features that Harmy put together. It's amazing and I never have to worry about losing them.

Grabbed all of these instinctively back when they were released because I had a feeling that they were going to be last official release of the theatrical cuts (and I was right). And I had no patience to track down the laserdisc set from which they were pulled -- although I do wish I did have that beautiful ultra-luxe set to display on a shelf next to The Skywalker Saga 4K set from a few years ago. Luckily the 4K77, 80 and 83 projects are freely available now so I never have to suffer through those laserdisc transfers again, but I still plan on hanging onto the DVD sets regardless.

I have a feeling that Lucas intentionally gave the DVD's a "rough" transfer to test if fans were willing to accept the Theatrical Cut in any quality. Regardless, I still am happy these DVD's are still around and easy to find on the home media market, meaning that we can still physically own the original versions for years to come.

One thing about the audio on those second discs, is that the 1993 2 Channel Dolby Surround tracks are not the theatrical originals, but rather remixed from the Stems of the original 70mm 6-Track versions, with some extra sound effects thrown in and some rebalancing as intended for home video.
The original theatrical audio came in three flavors: 70mm Six-Track, as heard in big premiere cinemas with huge screens and a good pair of subwoofers. Dolby Stereo, as heard in a majority of theaters equipped to handle it, and mono, as heard in matinees and drive-ins. The mono tracks had a couple extra dialogue tweaks ("Close the blast doors!" for example.)
Modern fan restorations such as Project 4K include all three original audio tracks, as well as the 1993 Laserdisc tracks, and you can even download different language dubs and add them to the file using an app like mkvtoolnix.

I stood in line for 2 hours and saw the movie at least twice before it left. I’m never getting rid of these discs and I’m okay with the reduced quality. I have these too. What annoys me is that when zooming in, it takes away a bit of picture detail on either side and the subtitles for the Han shot first scene and Jabba’s Palace in ROTJ mostly disappear. Other than that they do have their charm in that you know you’re watching unaltered versions on essentially a 1993 laserdisc

Look up the "Despecialized Editions." They are remastered, fan-made edits of the original cuts, and they are done INSANELY well.
All I want from Star Wars at this point is to get a remastered, HD version of the ORIGINAL Trilogy, with none of the bastardizations and unnecessary changes. If nobody will give me an official release (which I would happily pay for), then I will exercise other options.

Nowadays I'm not very enthusiastic about Star Wars at all-- I love the first three movies and that's pretty much it for me. I know that there are a LOT of people who feel the same way. It would be a travesty if the originals became lost media ... That would be insane, actually.
