- Poor old Max Rebo is probably the vintage Star Wars figure that suffers the most as he ages. You will be hard pushed to find one that is still the blue colour he is supposed to be, and often his keyboard / piano has keys snapped off.
Today I take a look back at a video I filmed many years ago and show a new way to get the blue back and also repair a missing key on his keyboard.

I wonder what the results of the dye might’ve been had you done the peroxide trick first to remove the yellow. But otherwise, it looks great! Nicely done as always!

Thank you for recommending this dye technique. I did this to my Max Rebo, following your instructions. I was able to find Rit Dye More Kentucky Sky, dipped my Max for 5 minutes, and he looks as good as blue!

Hi Dave, just FYI once RiT Dyemore's been diluted & used you can actually keep it and reuse it later by reheating again, if you have a means to store it. I have mine stowed in airtight off brand tupperware-style tubs.

Really nice key there by the master of styrene and plastic weld.😉 The Rebo dying sure came out nice, good he's such a bold vibrant color originally. Not sure why types of dye come and go from the market but thanks for that update on a new option.
I love your repairs! Most TH-cam repairers would jump straight to silicone moulding and casting a replacement. Or 3D scanning, CAD modifying the digital scan then resin printing….but not Toy Polloi! Styrene sheets and a sharp blade and wham! New replacement part! 😂

Should be easy to strip the paint off of yours and try again. This turned out a very nice shade of blue.

I'd been wanting to buy the purple and green "Dr Zaius" outfits from either Worlds Greatest Superheroes or Classic TV Toys for some custom Planet of the Apes Mego figures, but the USPS shipping costs are absolutely insane - They've just got to be kidding with what they want!
Anyway, picking up a couple of Zaius figures from B&M, and a couple of bottles of Rit Dye More totalled around £43 - £2.50 over the minimum order value for Classic TV Toys but without the hefty $40-$80 postage (plus i got the bonus of two extra bodies for future customs) - Anyone wanting to do this should avoid Dylon though, as I tried it, but it doesn't work with the synthetic fabric.

Nice! Slick job on fabricating that key. I just finished fabricating a broken and lost corner of an n scale locomotive. There's a certain joy in recreating what's missing and having it come out convincingly.

I'm going have have to try that dye on a few of my faded Max figures.
I've seen so many of these sunbleached rebos around Im surprised nobody's jumped at the chance to make some kind of "albino rebo" custom . He certainly has prescence with those bloodshot eyes and stark white skin.
That Sapphire and Steel opening made my day. glad to see im not the only one remembring that series

I've watched almost all of your stuff and work a lot with models and styrene myself and I have to compliment you on how much your skills have improved over the years. Your new 'key' was a very impressive piece of work. Maybe next time, paint the whole keyboard? With faded plastics, they all end up a different colour to the way they started out so it would probably end up being less noticable.
Thanks. The more I fix the better I get. I prefer not to paint areas that were not painted in the first place which is why I tried to colour match the key. It would be easier to paint everything, I just don't like to.

He looks a little like a Clanger. Does this mean that we can assume that the Clangers' moon is part of the Star Wars Universe? I do hope so :) It does answer the question of why blue string pudding is blue... Froglets for the Republic!
Great job. I always liked Max Rebo. It's interesting that the Kenner toy incorrectly gave him legs like that. On the puppet in the movie, he is actually playing with his feet. His "ears" are actually his flipper arms.
I heard that was a concept only but it was changed to playing with his hands for the actual puppet.

@@mparkes1821No, he's all blue. Google image him. As for the original poster, Kenner made the figure correctly. As the other poster wrote, Max Rebo playing with his legs was a concept model. In the movie he uses his arms and hands.
I love the playing with his feet version….in the movie if you look carefully you can see that the concept is he’s sitting on top of the organ….the centre isn’t hollow, it’s just that the Kenner toy version has distorted the truth about Ortolans!

Looks Awesome! I used the same several months ago, I have used the peroxide method to de-yellow tarnished blue colors ( on a Vintage Lando ) and it worked wonderfully, may want to try with Max to even it out
I had a bit of deja vu. I could've sworn you made this video before, and after searching through your catalog, I realized it was Mr. Bobot that did the keyboard repair before. Still watched the whole thing because at that point I wanted to see what was different, and how you colored Max Rebo blue again. I never saw your older video on dying Max, so this was pretty interesting!
EDIT: About the yellowing, did you think of maybe trying the retro brite method to remove the yellowing?

So with Max I would have used the peroxide cream first to remove the plastic discoloration yellowing because it gives the blue torso a teal green tint. I think removing the discoloration first it would have an even shade of blue.
did you have to use any sealant after dying Max?
No. It stains the plastic. I just rinsed it off and it's been fine since.
Vallejo has a couple of tan/beige shades that are very versatile: Iraqi Sand and Desert Yellow. I use those two (straight and in mixes) quite a bit. Hope this helps.
Davw you have got the patience of Jobb. Most people would have never taken the time to put those two small pieces on the bottom of the key beside the post. True attention to detail. I find myself being slightly anal when it comes to things like that in my model builds. Even with little bits, and details you can really see. So I can relate to that. No one would ever know you repaired this if you didnt tell them aheah of time. As always Thanks again Dave.
Max's color looks great too. If someone were to take a little more time and do some deyellowing first. I think it would look just like the original. Fantastic.

Thanks. I think the yellowing comes back no matter what you do. There is no permanent fix for that.
Maybe find a Chemist's find a Solution and Market it on your Channel

The yellowing comes back depending on the exposure to sunlight.
In a window setting, very quick.
In a room, away from the window, not as fast.
However, as the effect is due to exposure to UV light, the use of sprays that block UV light (usually up to 99% they claim) slows the return of the yellowing even more.
Amazon sell this:
303 Products 30307 Aerospace Protectant Trigger Spray UV Ray Protector, 296 ml
They recommend it is reapplied regularly but that’s generally for items that are handled a lot and are in the Sun.
I bought this and it made such a difference after I used peroxide on old Mac cases. They’ve been on a shelf, away from direct sunlight and not handled. The cases are still good after four years.

I think I like Max better gray with blue clothes.

I have dyed some figures black with rit dye more synthetic. I was impressed with the results.
I have the green too but I have not tried it yet. Was thinking of dyeing a 200x beastman into moss man.
Maybe the blue will work on faded skeletors and fakers. You'd probably have to bleach the torsos a bit first to even up any patches where armour was if it's that yellowed like Max was but I think if you can even up the torso colour with a peroxide treatment, you might be able to even out the blue. Be cool to try it with a skelly even if it's just for a shorts video as it is a test.
Perhaps try some hydrogen peroxide on the green patch before the dye process.
Hi, Dave, I just found your channel and it'll be a blast to go through some of these tips. Out of the gate, I do have a Gentle Giant statuette I stupidly broke a finger off. I used super glue on a vintage Millennium Falcon when I was a kid and it melted the plastic, so I'm terrified to attempt any future type repairs. Do you have any tips on what glue could be ideal for reattaching a small finger to a statuette? Thanks for a great channel! I look forward to more.

I just ordered this dye. I once tried to do this with other blue dye, and it took hours with no good results.
Would it have helped to de-yellow him before dying, or would that have somehow impeded the process?
The yellow would have come back over time as it's caused by a different issue.
Why did the front stay yellowed? Otherwise very good job as usual. Thank you again. Are you going to dye the other one?
That is caused by the plastic degrading. I could have de-yellowed it first, but it would come back over time anyway.

Wrong type of plastic. The keys feel like a nylon based plastic. Plastic weld works with styrene types. Cheers

I have videos on pretty much every issue on the falcon, Including missing posts in the falcon cockpit console. Same fix should work on the seat.

I know its much more fun to mix colours by eye, and that the PMS-scale/book is expensive as heck, but have you considering using that in your mixing?
I think it is based on the use of the PMS-colors*, but it will give you a hint of how much of each color there is in the mix.
*I honestly dont remember if it is based on the CMYK-scheme (C27%, M22%, Y50%, K1%), or if its "You need 5% of Pantone 365, 32% of Pantone 447 [...]"

Seems like its based up on the use of CMYK. What I didnt remember was that the chart is for different kind of papers. 😕

It is a table used by press/priting factories. It is used to determine an _exact_ shade/color.
Many companies have their own "brand-color" associated with that particular company, (Coca-Cola red, Pepsi blue, McDonalds yellow
/red. etc).
To always get the same color, regardless of which printing house you are usein to print your advertisement, you can use this scale and say, "We use PMS 77 and PMS 495", and you will always get exactly this colors. 🙂
So its more for an 'market/company area of use', rather than an 'private home use'.

It's a shame that the keyboard keys weren't just black and white as that would have made it much easier. But I did always like that beige colour the keys had.

I did at the age of 8.
As my favourite part back then was the Jabba's palace and Sarlacc pit scene's.
They filled my Jabba's throne room scene up nicely, along with the other figures available at that time.
As for what to do with the band was up to imagination,
and I had many an hour with them just using that.
However that was just me, and what I did with them.
A child's mind with imagination is boundless.
