    I like the name "Over the Top"! The trench warfare mentioned in the story for this set makes the name both a pun on it's effect, and a clever story card.

    Calamity's wake actually looks pretty good as a counter spell. Either you stop someone else from comboing off with their graveyard, or you stop them from countering your combo with non creature spells.

    • @johnhildreth8895
      @johnhildreth8895 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is what I was going to post, but I saw you already had. I think this card is by far better than they are making it out to be. It is a white counter spell, most of the time. The exiling graveyards seems more flavor text than the 2nd line.

    • @TheUltimateRey
      @TheUltimateRey ปีที่แล้ว

      I already preordered a single for this exact reason lol

    • @arthurvandenbergh1881
      @arthurvandenbergh1881 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well you can’t do your combo either if it involves noncreature spells

    • @SilentDeath9414
      @SilentDeath9414 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the card is bonkers in white. Not only counter the spell but hose they’re whole strategy and stop the combo player dead in the tracks at least for the turn. Plus it still works like silence for defending your own combos if they are creature based like ballista or protean hulk lines

  • @infernotitan1158
    @infernotitan1158 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So I see Fleshgorger as at least a D. It's fantastic in specifically The Mimeoplasm, you exile it and any massive creature, and now your commander has ward of a huge life amount, and is a big beatstick. I'm super excited for it

  • @Gweezy12
    @Gweezy12 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I'm surprised you guys didnt talk about the psuedo silence ability on calamity's wake. I think thats the more power effect on the card.

    • @morsdraconis
      @morsdraconis ปีที่แล้ว +6

      100%. It's a second Silence for white for cEDH. Insanely powerful. Me thinks they've been playing in the powered down meta they've made too much.

    • @AbyssArray
      @AbyssArray ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm.. for me, I wouldn't have a home for it, since I don't like that sort of effect, it is strong, but strong in the wrong way for me. It does replace itself which makes it quite potent

    • @arthurvandenbergh1881
      @arthurvandenbergh1881 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well silence is one sided, so you can cast it on your own turn and then combo off. Calamity’s wake doesn’t have that option

    I like this set a lot for showing the differences between commander and 2 player formats like standard and modern and such, because Phyrexian Fleshgorger is probably going to be very good in something like Pioneer and Standard, but you two are completely right in saying that it's quite average (outside of very unique synergies) in commander.

  • @rascalqueen5426
    @rascalqueen5426 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Scholar of New Horizons lets you remove a counter from any permanent you control. That means ramping off Planeswalkers that can easily generate loyalty, it lets you abuse things like Undying/Persist, and it lets you constantly reset Sagas before they sac themselves, letting you repeat whatever Saga effect your deck wants most. I think it's way over a D, there's a ton of ways to make removing a counter from ANY permanent good.

    I'm with Beezy on Loran of the Third Path. It's pretty much a strictly better Rec Sage. The card draw is actually really good, particularly if your deck is lacking there. The fact you can choose which opponent gets the card each time is really useful, and the political advantage is not to be underestimated! Also, vigilance isn't nothing - plenty of white decks want to be attacking and vigilance helps facilitate that, even allowing you to use the card draw in addition to it. Very good card for mid EDH imo!

    • @Indy94445
      @Indy94445 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also it's a white card, a color that really wanted this effect on a creature because white is great at blinking. White got the 40k astartes creature that did the same with squad but was mana costed at 3W. this being 2W is better.

    A 3/3 lifelink/menace with ward: pay 3 life, for 1BB, that seems pretty good to me. The option to play it bigger for 7 is just an extra bonus. If you Animate Dead this card, it comes back at full size.
    That's one of my favorite cards in the set.
    I'm not saying it's the best card ever, but it's totally not an F.
    (Sometimes I forget your lens is always filtered through Commander, but still...)

      Yes their evaluation is based on EDH only, still I think this card has preety good potential. The ammount of graveyard shenanigans there is with black and artifact recursion if you mix it up with red, makes it really annoying to get rid off. As the game drags out, a "permanent" Ward pay 7 life is just too punishing. But its normal, they tend to underevaluate most of the cards.

  • @AnimalTTC
    @AnimalTTC ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just something that I think makes fleshgorger/other protype cards more interesting: if you blink or flicker them, they're going to come back as their big boy versions. Definitely niche, but seems like a fun thing to do, and I'm definitely gonna try to do something janky with them.

  • @CKarasu13
    @CKarasu13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Think Wreck Hunter should've gotten mentioned. It's no dockside(thank goodness) but it's cheap and can easily make tons of powerstones. In decks like Geth, Lord of the Vault or even the new Gix it can really pull its weight.
    Wondrous Crucible also looks decent in decks like Daretti.
    In fact, there are a number of decent niche cards introduced in this set.

Kess, Sedris, Muldrotha, Mimeoplasm, Sidisi and friends could all appreciate to mill half their deck. Not only that, but if you are already milling yourself, you are more likely to hit the 4 mana unearth cost.

    I think Urza’s sylex is kinda a bootleggers stash situation where it looks scary in theory, but it has too much holding it back. It’s 7 mana yo activate in your turn, and can only be done at sorcery speed which means you have to activate it on your turn.
    Against specifically ramp decks, I think it’s much closer to like a B and against everything else a C-. Many decks can function fine with 6 lands

    I have an interesting idea for Disciple of Caelus Nin; in decks that flicker until the next end step using cards like astral drift you can flicker it out during the end step before your turn, your permanents come back during your turn, Disciple of Caelus Nin will come back during your end step and everyone else will have to deal with it during their turns. I might give it a try in my Gavi, Nest Warden deck just to see how it plays out. feel free to lmk if I am wrong about any of this. it just popped into my head right now.

    Tocasia's Welcome is nearly Welcoming Vampire on an enchantment. Also i think I'm higher on Gix's command. I like that it bails you out of lethal threats of either/both extremes-opponent infinitely wide weenie tokens or a voltron/massive creature that can lethal you. The other two modes I'm sure can also keep it from being dead in the decks that want it.

    I’m still not convinced about Field of the Dead, it requires too many lands to be relevant by the time you win. I know it’s not the topic but you bring it up often.

    I’m actually really down on Visions in impulse draw decks. Because unlike Valakut Exploration it doesn’t give a side benefit/reward if you didn’t manage to play the card it hits. It does it if you played no cards from exile so if you get a powerstone from it that means you had a bad turn and a single bad mana rock isn’t a good consolation

    • @simonteesdale9752
      @simonteesdale9752 ปีที่แล้ว

      Visions either want to be in a deck with a good payoff for impulse drawing, as just another way to impulse draw, or it wants to be in a deck that wants a powerstone every turn, and sometimes gets a good card instead.
      It's a really interesting design that way.

    in the trenches is going in my vampire tribal in historical arena. And Awaken the Woods with a scute swarm late game.. *shivers* That's so much math. And I know if I ever pulled it off the next spell cast after the math would be a board wipe.

    Titania seems like the best meld card by far amongst them. The barrier of entry is so small, Tatiana is a fairly strong card pre-meld, substituting the land into your deck is whatever, and it seems like an obvious inclusion in any landfall deck (where lands are constantly going into the graveyard anyways).
    I also think you all are sleeping on Myrel, Shield of Argive. That card is nuts in a token deck, if even a decent chunk of your tokens are soldiers (and they probably are in a white deck). It's 2 crazy strong effects, on a creature with decent power/toughness, and the effect is on attacks (and not combat damage).

      Not many tokens are soldier though and she takes so long to get going by herself

    • @elsporko321
      @elsporko321 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NitpickingNerds Normally these would be two separate strong effects, and in that sense I would agree the soldier-specific ability is just too niche. But similarly to putting an average/niche ability on a land makes it strong, adding that ability on a card that's already a Grand Abolisher at a minimum is super strong, IMO. I'd be putting this in a Jetmir deck with a number of soldier-token generators. Even though Grand Abolisher is lower cmc, the versatility makes this a no brainer for me (and the fact that her base stats aren't like 1/2 or something awful for 4cmc).

    I already proxied Gixian Puppeteer for my Kamiz and Braids decks and played both of them the other day. I only drew it once in my Kamiz deck and twice in my Braids deck, so take this for what it's worth, but it performed pretty well. I might even reach and try it in my Greven deck to help mitigate some of the life loss. A lot of the high power/low toughness creatures I want to be sacrificing are 3 mana. I'm sure there are more decks it goes in than you would expect. It might even be the card I'm most excited for in this set. 😂
