- I know when I first started out, I would spend a lot of time online trying to find anything I could to help me in this industry, and I came across a ton of very useful things.
One thing I couldn't find however is how to operate a Hooklift truck. I have a ton of experience running and owning heavy trucks so It came naturally to me...but for someone just starting out in this business, it may not be that easy.
In this video I show step by step how to run a Hooklift truck and how to run it safely and properly.

Great video, very thorough explanation, thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Thank you very much for the very well explained video watching from New York
Thanks for the support Jose. Very much appreciated.
Now hopefully after watching this video I’ll know how to operate one in the near future. Good stuff John! 🙌🏽
Thanks for checking out the channel. 👊🏾👊🏾
Thank you for showing me good ideas
Glad you like them. Thanks for watching
Great Information John! FUNKYMONKEY appreciates your channel! Thank you 👊🏼
Thanks Guys. I appreciate the continued support. Keep crushing it out there.
Thank you! Extremely helpful!
Thanks for taking the time to watch. I appreciate the support.
Great explainer video. Thanks bro.
Thanks for the support and taking time to check out the channel. Very much appreciated Chris. 👊🏾
Very informative!
Thanks fore watching and supporting Chris. Much appreciated.
Great vids! So much information really appreciate. stupid question, when you moved the truck from under the can that used/pushed the jib in or out?
Or is that the natural movement of the hook when you moved the truck forward.
It's both at the same time. Operating the jib at the same time moving the truck towards or away from the dumpster. Great question BTW.
Pushing the truck out from under the dumpsters can be tricky when you're pointed uphill or the ground beneath the dumpster is smoother than the ground the truck is sitting on. That's my experience anyway with hydraulic lever operated bed and a stick shift truck.
Yes sir. Anything other than flat ground starts to introduce other factors when dropping or picking cans for sure. Valid point my friend.
Great videos. They have been extremely helpful to us. How do you advertise? What has been most effective for you? Thanks Chuck
Thank You Chuck for the continued support of the channel. If you look back to earlier this past year, there's a specific video breaking down how I advertise. Watch that and it should answer your question here. Thanks again for all the support and trust.
Awesome video
Thank You Víctor. We appreciate you watching
Your videos are the best and most informative! I plan to get this exact truck hopefully thru ruble. Am I able to run concrete. 12’s ,17’s 22’s all from this exact truck and where can I get some cans? And do you know the prices for them four off hand?. I’m located in Maryland. Thanks again for all of your info .
Reach out to Bucks Fabrication 855.860.3252 They build some of the very best dumpsters and they are on your side on the map too.
Thanks a lot John. Really liking your videos. I am wondering which model of palfinger you run on these trucks? What is the best one for a Chevy 6500 like this, running 22 cubic yard bins? And why did you pick 22 yards, and not, say, 20 yards? Sorry if that is a dumb question
16,000lbs Palfinger in the model on this truck. As far as why I run 22's and not 20's.... it's very simple, I give my customers 10% more than anyone else. Thanks for taking the time to watch the channel. Much appreciated.
Great teacher hit all the points i would of said
Thank You Harley. I appreciate you stopping by the channel today. Drive safely out there.
Very good video! Thank you sir!
Very much appreciate your kind words my friend.
@@samedaydumpster I just started a new job last week and you literally covered every scenario that I encountered. The part about pulling the truck out from under the dumpster vs letting the hook itself do the work (which makes the dumpster roll) was huge! Thank you again for a great video and good heads up on what to look for in my new job. I wish you the best!
@@jayp4545 That’s what this is all about. Sharing whatever I can you others to get thru the job. Thanks for watching brother
Great video John. Definitely answered some of my questions. What does your truck weigh empty with out a dumpster? And What maximum weight capacity does it give you on say your 22yd dumpsters? Thanks
Those are some great questions my friend.
Truck weighs 12,540 ( with no cans )
Truck weighs 14,980 ( with a 22 cubic yard can )
We can legal 23,000lbs with this truck.
23,000 - 14980 = 8020lbs of payload on our 22 cubic yard size cans.
Hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching.
@@samedaydumpster thank you for the information John.
Awesome video man great info where can purpose a hook truck and dumpsters?
I would look on FB marketplace for a used truck and dumpsters. That's the best place for anything used.
@@samedaydumpster thank you
That paint is sick!
Thanks Joshua! We are super pleased how it turned out. Thanks for watching.
Good information
Thank You.
The palfinger seems supreme in comparison to the swaploader I had
I’ve only owned Palfinger systems. I won’t hesitate to purchase them again. Very solid, reliable and I have a great dealer network in fortunate to work with.
Great information! Thanks John! Always appreciate your willingness to help others!
Thanks Cody. Always appreciate your support my man! 🙏🏽
When your running concrete on this set with your 10yard bins how much weight is in the bin? Any issues going over the 23k weight rating of the truck?
You should do a video of servicing the palfinger Hooklift
Love this idea - I’ll make it happen. Thanks for the suggestion
Great video
Thanks for watching.
Nice truck too. What is the biggest size dumpster you can load on this hook lift truck? How long of a dumpster?
On this truck in this video, the longest can you can carry is 14' long.
Thank you for the video just got my hook lift and starting to fabricate my dumpsters. Question why do you prefer the mechanical lock over the pistol grip?
For me it’s an easier visual…. The pistol grip is under the bed and it’s a lot harder to see if it’s fully locked. The hot bar style I’m running… with a real quick glance from anywhere ( including inside the truck ) I can see if it’s fully locked. Great question.
Oh wow I live in Vegas and own a Junk Removal / Dumpster Rental business here. Let’s defiantly meet up when you’re down here, drinks on me!
@@supremejunkremoval message me and I’ll share my cell phone number with you.
a great video
Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
Hey, great content! Can you do a video of how to put the hooklift into 'City-Mode' and how to get it out of 'City-Mode'?
City Mode? teach me something.... I have not heard of that term before....
@samedaydumpster ok, so there's a city-mode you can put the hooklift into. Which will restrict the functions of the hooklift, so certain movements will not be available. Basically, you won't be able to pick up or drop a dumpster in this mode. To put it into city-mode, I believe, you have to hold down the 'on' button and the 'lock' buttons for 10 seconds. There are probably more modes, but I haven't found it. The reason I'm mentioning this is because it somehow accidentally happened to one of our trucks, and it was basically useless that day.
What type of license do you need to drive one of these trucks??
Pros and cons to the 5500? I know some people don’t like them but I can’t recall why
Not sure on the 5500's. We run only 6500's. They are workhorses and we put them to the test daily. Thanks for watching.
on the money!! Is that a 60° angle?
Honestly couldn't tell you the dump angle on this truck and dumpster... but its aggressive and nothing ever gets held up in it. It cleans out super nice on every dump out.
Could you add the pistol grip bar to your cans as a extra lock back in the day would be called over kill
You could.... but you would loose the flexibility of of sliding your jib and stopping it anywhere you want to transport it. I don't believe it's needed to have both hotbeds and pistol grips at the same time. It wouldn't hurt, but def overkill.
@@samedaydumpster thank you it was a idea I got because of yours having the parts and had figured you had a chance to think about the idea so thank you for your reply
Do you have a strategy for dealing with flat tires without too much downtime?
Buy the best tires money can buy and perform a daily pre-trip inspection and look at every tire every day. If you see a nail, screw or bolt or anything else, get it fixed ASAP before you destroy the tire buy running on it after you notice it. No secret pill when it comes to tires.
@@samedaydumpsterThanks!
What system is this? I’m looking at the same truck with a stellar system. Or where could I buy this system?
this truck is a 2022 Chevrolet 6500 4x4. 108'CA with a Palfinger 16,000# system. We purchase all our trucks from Ruble Truck Sales in New Haven, IN. Ask for Jeff, he's very familiar with how we build our trucks.
@@samedaydumpster thank you I have talk to him and saw the trucks in person and will have my truck build and ready before the end of the month I’ll got the Silverado 6500 with the stellar 20-S system.
Who fabricated your dumpsters? And what’s the benefit of setting the Hooke height to 54” rather than 36”?
Steel Products in Salt Lake City, UT.
Without trying to write an entire book here, I personally wouldn't buy a 36" Hooklift truck or run 36" dumpsters at all. There's zero advantage over 54"... just drawbacks. If you are just getting into the game or just getting started, start with 54", you'll thank me later.
What is the wheelbase of that truck ? Length of can ? and also how many yards is it ? and what is the GVW of the truck ? this was by far the best video for instructional purposes and how to safely operate a hook lift ! I appreciate it very much
Thank You Rich for watching.
1. Wheelbase = 108”
2. Length of can in video = 12’5”
3. 12.86 cubic yard capacity
4. GVW = 23,000
Thanks for the support my friend.
@@samedaydumpster With this wheelbase are you running your 22yards on this same exact truck as well? Is all your trucks have the same exact hooklift system and same 108 CA?
@@davidc5808 No, this truck in this video is 108” CA. I also run a 120” CA truck.
@@samedaydumpster Awesome! And the 108 CA can run the 22yard no problem? What's the difference between having a 108CA and 120CA? Any advantages or disadvantages?
@@davidc5808 The preferred truck for the 22’s is the 120” CA truck. That truck is a little longer but the cans ride best on it. We do so much work in the downtown area, the 108” CA truck is the preferred choice for those extremely tight job sites. The 108” CA Carrie’s the 22’s perfectly fine, they just ride that much better on the 120” CA
What model truck and hooklift do you have in this vid?
Chevrolet 6500 4x4 108" CA equipped with a Palfinger 16,000# system.

Gracias amigo 🙏
How much these jobs pay?
How much was this truck and hook build?
$120k
What size dumpsters are those?
12 cubic yard.
How long of rails?
Can you pull a gooseneck with a hooklift truck?
It would def take some custom fabricating to be able to... I don't have any gooseneck trailers, so I've never really looking into it seriously, but I'm sure it can be done with some fabrication.
How wide are your dumpsters?
Standard width as all standard rail dumpsters are 7' 4' wide.
@@samedaydumpsterThanks!
Where can I buy a used truck like yours and the dumpsters. I am inspired
Not sure about any used trucks like this for sale currently. Look on FB marketplace and search there. If you choose to look at new trucks, message me and I'll point you in the right direction. Best of luck my friend.
💪🏻🤨👍🏻
Thanks Erik. I appreciate the support.
Never would buy one I buy one that pull on allday
Yet here you are, watching a video about hooklift trucks and then taking time to leave a comment on how your way is so much better. I'll be watching for your video breaking down why hooklift trucks are so bad....
You can't be outside the truck picking up and dropping the can .
This guy. Doesn't make a living with the truck
You're right... all these dumpsters and Peterbilts are just props for TH-cam. No money being made, don't know what I'm doing, all a big scam. The entire dumpster community Thanks you for calling me out with your extremely intelligent and business savvy comment.
