- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be discussing the history of the Black Lake, as well as one of its most mysterious and infamous inhabitants-the giant squid.
The Black Lake-otherwise known as the Great Lake-is a large body of fresh water that sits landlocked upon the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, just south of the school’s castle. Its waters can be seen directly from the castle, as it is located below the school itself.
For those of you who are familiar with the other wilderness areas that surround Hogwarts castle, such as the Forbidden Forest, it is rather well known that the school’s grounds offer a home to many magical beasts and creatures. Acting as more than just the castle’s plumbing receptacle, the Black Lake is no exception, granting shelter to a large number of inhabitants, including a village of Merpeople, an abundance of vicious little Grindylows, and, of course, the legendary Giant Squid.

A what if video of Ron taking Harry's place in the Triwizard Tournament. Hermione could make a polyju's potion to do it.
I wish the harry potter stories had Hagrid showing his class the giant squid. I feel like Hagrid would have definitely interacted with the squid during his daily duties.

That would take away from the mystery, it's better as is. There have to be some unknowns.
Assuming that it hasn't been around since the beginning of Hogwarts, then it's possible that the squid was one of Newt's rescue creatures that he left in the lake as a new home. Particularly if it's been domesticated as mentioned in the video, because it seemed like in the Fantastic Beasts films, Newt's rescues have been somewhat tamed during their time with him. I could be wrong, however. . ....
I want a movie with the story of the 4 founders of Hogwarts. It would be a nice
medieval adventure, and J.K. Rowling can build the begining of the Wizarding World. We love Harry, Dumbledore etc, but the Wizarding World can produce so many authentic stories. There is no reason all the movies to be only about the events of Harry Potter. We need new stories, totally new heroes, etc.
In the book, the youngest Creevey boy fell into the lane when the giant squid grabbed him and put him back into the boat.
So, I like the idea that the giant squid is a protector.
I was wondering how a squid, a saltwater denizen is living in a freshwater lake. Being magic would explain it. I wonder how they breathe without gills.
Squid have two gills below they're eyes and between the tentacles and eyes
Thank you for another great video. I think it would have to be magical to live in fresh water and sentient to not shred the humans and merpeople it comes across.
It would have been interesting if the giant squid protected the Castle in the battle of Hogwarts and we just didn't see it like I could see some of the Giants trying to cross the lake and the cracking just being like nah. Or if the dementors covered close enough to the water, maybe it would grab some of them
The thing that bothers me the most is why it is the "black lake" and not the black loch. It is, after all, in Scotland. Which only has one lake. And that was an ordinance survey mistake that stuck. I get it would have freaked out the Americans, but really, I can't see the reason in canon, other than with a larger proportion of English students it changed over the years?
The interesting thing about the giant squid is that when JK Rowling started writing HP, giant squids were a myth. Since then, we have confirmed the existence of giant squids.

I thought that the magical lake was there first, and they chose the site of Hogwarts because of it's proximity.

I believe yeah that the squid is magical and that it was j.k. Rowling's version of the Loch Ness Monster it makes sense there are some rumors that the Loch Ness monster has been able to find underwater tunnels out to the sea water areas.
Also I do believe that the squid is the one moving the boats and keeping an eye out for students that might fall in.

I didn't know that the 7th years travelled across the lake on their final journey from Hogwarts. Can't you please do a video on the customs regarding celebrating the 7th years.
Peeves the poltergeist and the giant squid are on my list of things I wish they kept in the movies
Makes me wonder, the lake isbpnly avout a half mile in diameter, so I'd assume its oboy big enough for 1 merperson village...have they been inbreeding this whole time? That (along with water temp) may explain their non-traditional appearance
What if the giant squid was something that hagrid would have like everything he has is magical I'm not saying this was his because the fact it was there before him so my point is what if the founders of Hogwarts had their own pets Slytherin had that giant snake why not have Gryffindor or one of the others have the giant squid so they created the Black lake for their pet at first the pet wasn't that big but obviously now we can see that it's huge from overtime in the lake
In Vietnam and other places like that there are giant sea water fish thriving in lakes for years. They have the ability to alter their ability to survive
There are giant fish originally living in salt water being found in fresh water. Please check it out. This is more common than not

Is the Black Lake actually fresh water though? You staed that there is no connection to other bodies of water. Presuming you mean there is no outflow (there is obviously inflow from the mountains surrounding it, as well as from the castle), that would mean that the lake would be salty, very salty. Take for example, the Great Salt Lake, which has no outlet. Over time, minerals, including salt, build up in the water, making such a body of water much saltier than even the oceans.
in hp world it can be explained with magic. Same with the forbidden forest

Also to the best of our knowledge merpeople are overwhelmingly consider to live in Salt water...
Also could vibe with the notion some ancient scamander began using it as a sanctuary for magical aquatic critters.

I'm curious HOW the four people at the bottom of the lake even got there to be able to be saved! Were they some kind of mannequin or body double specially made for the event? I mean the four dear and close friends of the 4 Champions were at risk, drowning and cold. And what if Harry had not saved the girl. Would be have been stuck down there? Can someone explain this amazing event?

I've always wanted there to be a male female pair with potentially a few mini giants at the depths, and of the 2 one is better at interacting with people and the other - not aggressive per se... less social
