    actually, there was a time, when people ask about painting which brushes, paints were used. in the renaissance time, when all the painters meet and show off their paintings in galleries and discussing new toys, brushes, oil mixtures etc.
    Rembrandt went there, "you talentless fools, lets see if you can do this with fancy brushes and oils" the walk over to emty canvas and draw a circle "copy this ! if you can".
    nobody could, because he draw an absolute perfect circle, freehand.

    0:40 asking someone about which brushes he uses is actually legit.

    • @Mograph
      @Mograph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, if it pertains to a specific technical reason. But in this context, this is referring to people who would ask what brush because they think they'll be able to paint just as well if they only just buy the same brush.

    The point is, there's not the best one, but the proper one that suits better specific needs. And yes, starting from the usability question, certainly there is a better tool, for instance Corona. It is slow but super simple, making user life so much easier.

    haha I actually watched late night render talks twice already trying to soak in all the info. Worth adding that render engines develop so fast that any opinion merely represents a single point in time but things may change just a week after that. (Octane developed 3 generations within one year)

    In think a big point is the community and the amount of tutorials. Every time, when i try to search a solution for a c4d problem, the first few hits are octane tuts. Actually im trying to get into arnold. I really like the engine, but honestly ithink about switching because there are not that much tuts and information out there (or havent found that much so far).

    Personally I use VRay since it has both GPU and CPU rendering and it can render Phoenix FD without problems. Personally I have found that Corona and some other render engines have problems rendering correct brushed metals, that may be settings, but in VRay I can do it :) - Octane and FStorm look interesting - I will try those out. People just need to decide, since building libraries in one render engine can take years of work to convert. Corona is also good for many things, personally I do not like it for animations.

    Great video, I applaud your efforts to reduce such a complex choice down to something beginners can understand. However I do feel the video might have been a little over simplified. I understand you can't include every detail or you'd end up with the "War and Peace" of render engine videos. I do think you should make a companion video that perhaps goes into a bit more detail and even talks to a few artists (no long interviews just sound bites) about their choice and why. Regardless, great work, keep it up :-)

    • @Mograph
      @Mograph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, however most Arnold people are still using CPU currently and use GPU for reference before switching back to CPU for render. Rather than get THAT detailed in this short video we went with the 30,000 foot view. Yes, technically you are correct. More in depth render talk can be seen on the video we reference at the end.

    In fact Octane for example has it's own colorspace sort of also already uses LUT out of the box also it's heavily unbiased so people who are looking for more realism might find Octane "better" + it's easier to setup.
    Redshift renders mostly gonna look like dogshit out of the box, but it's overall more flexible renderer.
    Technically Redshift is alot better so it's kinda better renderer overall. But Octane might suit some work a bit better so like it was said: None is best.

    • @Mograph
      @Mograph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@codemonster8443 I guess it is, but our advice would be to go Nvidia if you're getting into GPU render engines. I wouldn't put your bets on ProRender at this point. It's all Redshift and Octane for the most part in the industry at the moment. Arnold has a GPU option as well now.

  • @thepolybox
    @thepolybox 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree about the notion that the render engine doesn't make the image. It does in parts. If I rebuild the same scene with the same materials with the same lighting in 2 different render engines, they WILL look plenty different because every engine handles stuff differently. For example, if you try to compare Redshift to C4D physical you will almost certainly see a very, very noticeable difference. I love Octane for it's special "Octane Look" but I also love Redshift for it's flexibility and speed. I do understand why people ask that question. I've seen artists switch render engines and their artwork got either better or sometimes worse, at least to my eyes.

    adding a couple of GPU cards isnt going to make a big impact on getting lots of renders done. you need a GPU renderfarm - like 10 GPU cards... which costs even MORE than a CPU renderfarm.

    • @Mograph
      @Mograph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely make an impact with GPU cards. If your render is 2:00 a frame with a GPU engine, adding another card will take it to 1:00 a frame. Going to 4 cards will make it :30 a frame. That's a pretty significant difference.
