@@jhowardsupporter Why? Don't you live with or know people who chew and eat overly loud? That is called passion, and not giving a damn about etiquette and others around you. Those people do exist in real life, and I avoid eating around them.
Ive always assumed the sounds were always the actual sound captured in the scene, not post production. Recently ive discovered Foley artists. Theyre amazing!
If you wanna see movies where all the Sound & Music you hear is captured while filming, then check out a film making principle called "Dogma 95" - There are several good movies in this style.
I think we forget that all of the mics in production are used for dialog, so they are all close to the actors recording speach. The mics on the cameras arent used because they pic up all the unwanted sounds and the sound isnt as crisp or dynamic. By adding sound in post, each audio has its own track so you can control each individual element better for a more dynamic shot.
For people wondering why this is necessary, there are quite a few reasons why this is still done for films and TV shows. Firstly, movie sets are noisey. There is noise from equipment, from crew and from uncontrollable background noise from the set location. This is the same reason why even the dialogue is commonly rerecorded later in a process called ADR. Secondly, recording these sounds in a studio means that you have more control in the aesthetic of the soundtrack. An example of this would be in comparing the sound for a movie fight scene, where the sounds are very exaggerated and hyped, and a real life fight. Thirdly, it's important to keep the dialogue audio and the Foley/sound effects audio recorded separately from each other. This is so that the dialogue tracks can be removed and replaced for dubbed foreign translations. This would not be possible if the audio was recorded as is on set, as the dialogue would be present in the recorded SFX.
In short, to make the sound more professional. Professional I mean lots of processes and logic behind just like what you've mentioned. Thank you btw. This is a little bit one of my dream jobs.
@@milez7543 nothing. Most people do this as a passion and get their own field recorder. You have to mix your own recordings and arrange your own library while occasionally getting freelance work on small independent films.

I know some of the effects of video games, they have been using modern Foley things as well since the N64/PS1. I know for the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater game, the sound artist had a bunch of surfaces in the back of his house. That is him you hear riding the skateboard all over to get the right sound. Of course he never had been on a skateboard before, so most of the pained effects are him accidentally wiping out and recording it. Now for something from last year. In order to make the meat exploding sounds of the Mancubus in the new DOOM 2016 game, they slathered steak with a bunch of honey, blew it out of a vuvuzela and into canned soup to make gory sounds. I have no idea how they come up with some of these sounds. Corn starch in a bag for snow. What.
It's not about faking the sounds... it's about improving the quality of the movie/video.. They make these for the details you hear but probably missed or don't care about.. the actual audio from the video would probably sound like shit.
I don't agree. Why not just mic up the natural sounds as they are happening? They have boom mic guys, so I don't understand why not. It'd save alot of time and money in post production too and you'd actually get the authentic sounds.
@@DevotedDisciple-x One issue that comes up is when the shot is too wide to even have the boom operator close to the sound. This is often dealt with by getting the Foley from the same location as the shot was taken. But more often than not, film sets are busy and loud, and there just is not enough time to have everyone wait and be quiet while the sounds are recorded. The other big issue is that a location has a lot lot lot of natural sounds, like cars, construction, wind, and people that aren't in your shot. A recording studio will let you capture totally clean audio.
@@CorboWill Thank you for explaining that so well to me, that makes much more sense now. You have successfully changed my mind on the subject, a rarity to do online as nobody likes to admit when they are wrong. Well done.

How can it be that this video hit me so deep? Truly fascinating... I'm an engineer who works with technology, still this is so... hands on, imaginative, playful and true. I'm quite stunned.
MaryJo Lang you know I have grown to appreciate the sound and music in films because thay are what make them great as movie are good but with the right sounds and music their amazing and I think you pay a big part in it
RTD No, you're wrong. It should be what sound better. Because sound like lights or music is there to set an ambiance and sometime to pull a message. In a dramatic scene, silence, then cocking of a gun, cracking of wood, a droplet of blood. Just imagine. In this case, it's more important that each sound is strong, carry a lot of "imagery" in the mind of the spectators, rather than being the actual reality sounds. Also, has it is said in the end of this clip, sounds have to fight screentime with dialog and music.
This is awesome! So what if they’re not natural sounds? Sometimes the natural sounds aren’t prominent enough in nature to be picked up effectively on the microphones. I honestly think it’s way cooler and more impressive that they can recreate sounds with these fun props. They’re still the same sounds we want to hear, just from a different source. 😀
I discovered this job and its secrets in a korean drama "Another Miss Oh" I was dumbfounded, it's such à beautiful and creative job and it was potrayed in such a poetic way in this kdrama.

Maybe it didn't come across as I meant it... the first comment said, the used the real sound things make, but how could you use the real sound of a things or animated animals, that would never be able to do such things? Because that just never happens in real life so they have to make the sounds for that! I already knew about Foley artists before this video :)
I'm currently doing this as school , for my music in multimedia class, we took a movie scene, muted it then added our own recording sounds
Elle J sounds fun! cool class
Elle J how would I find a class like this
Owen b ask ur mom

How can it be that this video hit me so deep? Truly fascinating...
I'm an engineer who works with technology, still this is so... hands on, imaginative, playful and true.
I'm quite stunned.
Jonathan Odqvist *uses a boot to make the sound of rain hitting the hat*
So happy how this turned out. Thank you, Weather Channel!
MaryJo
MaryJo Lang Your job is so cool!
Great work guys, great work. I'm speechless.
MaryJo Lang you know I have grown to appreciate the sound and music in films because thay are what make them great as movie are good but with the right sounds and music their amazing and I think you pay a big part in it
MaryJo Lang WOAH ITS YOU
your the GOAT
Sound of rain hitting a hat
*uses a boot
Thats because it would sound better if it hit the boot rather than actually hitting the hat.
Michael Wen yeah but it shouldn’t be what sounds better it should be what it actually sounds like
RTD No, you're wrong.
Sailboat cutting through water
*uses hands and a random cape
See how stupid your comment sounds?
Sound of leaves *uses not leaves*
This is awesome! So what if they’re not natural sounds? Sometimes the natural sounds aren’t prominent enough in nature to be picked up effectively on the microphones. I honestly think it’s way cooler and more impressive that they can recreate sounds with these fun props. They’re still the same sounds we want to hear, just from a different source. 😀
Thanks for not being a gloom & doom troll! 🌻
@@patriciatinkey2677 Aw, my pleasure! ☺️ Thank you for your kind comment!
I love that horse hoof sound
Sense 1:31 amazing 💕
For me it's crushing sound when you walk on snow ❤
So realistic
Sherryl Sherryl *sweats* I don't know anymore
I discovered this job and its secrets in a korean drama "Another Miss Oh" I was dumbfounded, it's such à beautiful and creative job and it was potrayed in such a poetic way in this kdrama.
Maks same. I loved that drama
Another Miss Oh! Me too 😂
Andrey Doank Yes Another Miss Oh, it's a great drama!!
Haha that drama is how I learned about it too!
Yeahhhhhhhhhh
Imagine being paid to make sounds, sounds like a dream job😱😂
That Individual Everybody says this and so many people try to do it. It's actually very hard to do professionally. I've been trying to break into the field now for nearly 10 years with some minor success, but still not getting paid. It's only for the most passionate.
john mellor yeah I started producing I'm doing well after 1 yr my best advice is diversity in your skill set is real important I produce but I'm here because I'm also teaching myself mixing. I guess what the guy said is true the most passionate before I wrote music like lyrics didn't make a dime but I pressed forward I love art
Pun intended?
LT. RedSand lol
LT. RedSand that's called seiyuu or voice actor/actress
This is what I originally went to audio engineering school for - sound effects or foley for tv/movies and video games. I love this shit!
Then please, I beg you, teach me how to make a thunder cracking! Or at least tell me is it impossible or not, because I cannot find any tutorials about foley and this is driving me crazy man!
Can u share some knowledge pls. I love foley and sound effects too but can't afford the trainings right now. It's really expensive
I never sought this upload, this upload sought me. Now my life will never be the same again..
Same here : (
*COOLEST JOB EVER!!*

Leilani Valdez I love your name... lol
I LOOOOOVE recording foley. It is so fun to recreate what naturally happens.
The ultimate ASMR
Mind. Blown.
You should watch the foley video for Lord of The Rings. I'm not a huge fan of those films but the foley work was amazing.
To bad it’s fake
Hmu
THEY SHOULD BE ONE OF THE HIGHEST TO BE PAID. MAKING GREAT SOUND EFFECTS ARE NOT AS EASY AS A PIE. I SALUTE THESE PEOPLE BEHIND THE CRAFT FOR WITHOUT THEM, MOVIES, RADIO DRAMAS AND ANIMATIONS ARE VERY MUCH INCOMPLETE.
pLakado Prodaxons ok why u shoutin
pLakado Prodaxons why all caps?
That's not how wages work. You get paid as much as you agree to. If you don't like it, then you can ask for more, but there will be probably someone else who would do it for less.
This is equally genius and yet feels like betrayal.
The sounds are very convincing
Damn it, and I thought they only do this in Tom and Jerry.
They did a good job!
You serious 🤦🏻♂️
How old are you? You must be 11.
@@nowonmetube And for not getting a joke, you are 10?
Thanks YT, I love this recommendation
It really opens up the viewing experience when you realize all of these things that go into the final production. Amazing stuff!
Saw something like this in Singapore's universal studio.
It was amazing really

There are many stars that we don’t know in film industry 💔. Good work👌🏽
These pple play a very big role in a movie...without dem ..movie industry is dead ..big up👍
These are the real stars
i really wanna try being like them cuz ever since i was young, i've always loved sound effects. until now i still do! i'd listen closely to the sounds my shoes make in the library, the creaking noise of my locker and things like that.
One day you will insha Allah
Congratulations Team for your fabulous creativity and bringing these beautiful sounds closer to us.
I truly wish if I could join such a creative and fabulous company.
God bless you.
This is actually pretty amazing. Although they are not the real sounds, they use these sounds to simulate the actual sound to draw in their audience. It’s like using ASMR with visually pleasing footages to create an immersive experience.
well i guess we learn something new everyday, i'm gonna start appreciating more the sounds of things on the films
Yes
well I thought the sounds I hear in the movies are actually real lol

Plot twist: they had to Foley themselves making Foley sounds for this interview.
how did they get hired though? was it through a friend? was it their demo reel? what did they do before this career? finding work in audio-post is tough.
We all come from a performance backgrounds, acting, etc. Chris Moriana's father was Rocky Moriana. He was a Music Supervisor for Aaron Spelling and worked on The Love Boat, Dynasty, etc. My father was character actor Alvy Moore whose best known role was Hank Kimball on Green Acres. We've all been doing Foley for over 30 years when it was just beginning to become a profession.
This just amazed me. How do I get into Foley? Who do I talk to? This is all amazing work!
ilickspam All they have to be is white and know a friend of a friend who somewhere along knows a Jewish hotshot...don't get me wrong is a talent alright but nonetheless white only #modernsegregation
Harrison Torres I think you need some help. Like seriously.
+Harrison Torres pathetic
seems like just a cool interesting job😃
Masta Cheifer it does! I'm starting to want to do it as a job because of this lol
Something in me just died knowing all the sounds I hear in movies are fake.
Zing Sting well for water sounds they use water😂so not really fake. I'm sure for some things they use the real thing
Well some are diegetic and some are non diegetic
Zing Sting Im pretty sure you will prefer the foley sound over the on site sound. It much more crisp and clear
Zing Sting but its still satisfying tho
Speaking of crisp and clear. +Ellane Tatum You are very beautiful :)
For my 23 years of existence, now i can rest myself for all of those movies i have seen all are big lies 😂 those sounds are pretty cool to hear really natural. Salute these artists 🙏🙌
I really didnt want to know how they do this..now every time I'm gonna watch a movie I'll be thinking about how it's made😂
It’s cool to see how much work goes into it all
like how your parent did to get you
😂😂😂😂
This is what my brain does when I see a couple with a baby.
Then why did you click on the link? Fool
Id expect them to have a better studio
its one of the best studios actually. Foley stages are such a mess and disorganized.
Organized chaos
Sounds like my kind of job
Just realized the pun now...
my friends parents work at a foley studio and it’s very cramped and messy.
This whole clip made me smile ! I love the sounds, they're very pure ! I kinda reminded me of asmr
Making films are not a joke hats off to those people who struggle lot to just entertain us👍
Even though movie actors are the big things on screen, it's the people behind the screen that makes the movie.
omg, i cant belive this. amazing! Nice
Plot twist: Everything you hear in movies is just a bunch of ASMR
