'Foley artist' is one of the coolest jobs I can think of, it seems like a career filled with just endless curiosity and creativity that can help you listen to your whole life with new ears.
I remember as a kid watching the bonus features for Brother Bear. One of the segments was a bts for how they did the Foley for the movie and that single moment kicked off a love of Foley art and filmmaking as a whole. One of the downsides I find with streaming is they no longer package bonus features like that with the media. If you’re curious, you gotta find that stuff independently, which I think is a real shame. No way I would have heard (heh) of something as cool as Foley if it wasn’t so readily accessible on the DVD for the movie I already loved.
1:00 "Actually, a man who talks for a living says talking's the most important sound" is such a wild argument if you think about it for a fraction of a second.

You've lived my dream! I was desperate to be a foley artist until my teachers told me it was a silly career path and got in my head about it. Never stopped loving the art, though. Loved watching this.
I often call out the awesome Foley artist in a scene. Because it's amazing. Also, I was friends with Joanne Foley - her grandfather was THE Foley the art is named after. She still has the ring of keys he used in the (possible) first Foley effect. Don't remember what exactly, but I believe it was of a Roman "legion" marching. It wasn't loud enough and didn't sound like the huge army the director was trying to represent. Mr. Foley played around with it and found a solution - his keys knocking against his leather belt. Or so the story Joanne told goes. She even got fanmail once in the early 90s from a company that specialized in doing Foley effects! It's convenient how much I love it. I even got over my fear of horror movies because I know most of the breaking bones scenes are breaking and twisting celery. Or at least they used to be. The Mortal Combat movie was FULL of them. Okay, goodnight! Fascinating channel but it's late. I'll pick up watching the 2nd half of your video tomorrow, honest!
Man, this video really tickled me! I did the "foleying" (nothing even remotely as professional as a real foley artist) in a 4 minute short film for uni, and also a 3 minute audio drama for school, and it was soooo much fun. Recorded some stuff, downloaded other stuff like hydraulic sounds from a CC licensed site, realised completely by chance that my mic stand sounded exactly like squeaky shoes when you slowly turn its joint (after trying like a dozen of different things to create a squeaky shoe sound). Then edit the sounds, cut, copy, paste, play with volume, echo, reverb and whatnot, and finally the satisfaction when it's all put together in the final product. Ah, good times!

Oh Foley? Yes please! It's a fascinating art! My design college had some Foley boxes recessed into the floor under removable panels. Old VHS tapes (sans cassette) made very convincing autumn leaves!

My favourite video now ❤ I was almost a foley artist before but the production house offered a different role they needed me in more 😂 but gosh this is my dream job 😍
There's an exhibit at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles where they show all of the audio engineering that went into the opening scene of "Raiders of the Lost Ark", including video of the foley artists synced up with the actual film.
awesome! i saw something similar at universal for the harry potter films where they showed clips from foley artists alongside the composers and other sound engineers. it's really cool and i'll have to check out the academy museum's exhibit next!
Foley is SO cool, I'm always deeply impressed by all of the sounds Foley artists produce without which most movies and tv shows would be deeply unsatisfying. That part about the sword unsheathing sound is something I've harped on since I was a kid but I suppose it wouldn't be as satisfying if it was the sound of a tiny whoosh of air.
I think sometimes about how sound design goes under appreciated, but it’s SO important. The irony is that folley and sound design is something they DON’T WANT YOU to notice. Otherwise the immersion gets broken.
This was a great look into it! On both videos I could tell something was off with the sound (without being able to pinpoint what), but the professional work never feels like that! The talent and skill!
great video, loved it. Sound are a big part of a good movie, but I think it is even more important in video games. An ok video game can be made so much better with satisfying sounds. Do you need to plant seeds again could be a chore, but if the sound of planting a seed is great it can be so satisfying, just planting one seed after the other. 🥰
Video games first made me conscious of sound effects and foley. Arenanet, in particular, had their sound team make a few videos about how they created various sound effects in game, like the sound of a fireball, etc. It is a fascinating field and must require amazing creativity.
Yeah, I agree, that was probably the only thing in the kitchen scene that sounded completely wrong to me. I could _not_ hear it as water boiling even when I really tried to. And unfortunately that was the dominant sound in the kitchen scene, which ruined it for me a little bit

Even my exposure to trying to find sound effects for video games was never quite this level of detail and realism, and that was already incredibly tricky and frustrating for me
answer in progress you will always be famous
(:] seeing people sincerely fail and learn to get better and "still not be hireable" is so refreshing. oh to live life in this way, it really was an answer in progress)
The bag swipe at 4:54 and the zipper pull at 4:58 ? Were those added after?
This was actually pretty dang cool! Awesome job! 👍👍
the chaplin clip with sound/foley is extremely cool to see!
My favourite video now ❤ I was almost a foley artist before but the production house offered a different role they needed me in more 😂 but gosh this is my dream job 😍
oh my goodness the year 2024 is the year of taha he has uploaded twice and it isn’t even december
I’m at 5:16 and if this isn’t leading into a story blocks read imma riot
great video, loved it.
Sound are a big part of a good movie, but I think it is even more important in video games.
An ok video game can be made so much better with satisfying sounds.
Do you need to plant seeds again could be a chore, but if the sound of planting a seed is great it can be so satisfying, just planting one seed after the other. 🥰
I've always love the way the make sounds in movies on the wall-e did the had a min documentary about how Disney made sounds
thanks for making a video about this! foley is very interesting audio work!
Foley is one of those things you really dont think about in movies until you watch a video like this or a making of
7:52 Channeling your inner Michael Reeves goblin energy?
Video games first made me conscious of sound effects and foley. Arenanet, in particular, had their sound team make a few videos about how they created various sound effects in game, like the sound of a fireball, etc. It is a fascinating field and must require amazing creativity.
Been waiting for this one since it was announce on Lateral. Only disappointment was that you didn't get Stephan's feedback on the kitchen scene.
is it me or does boiling water in a pot not sound like the bubble blowing?
I think full boil does sound a lot like that but it is missing smaller bubble noises and sizzle of the gas flame and some water that splashes out.
@@curtisbme they said it was electric. But imo the balance of sounds is off and the boil sounds artificial

Yeah, I agree, that was probably the only thing in the kitchen scene that sounded completely wrong to me. I could _not_ hear it as water boiling even when I really tried to. And unfortunately that was the dominant sound in the kitchen scene, which ruined it for me a little bit
