An under appreciated film. An expose of Boxing, in the days of Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo.
It should be noted that Jersey Joe Walcott from this film wasn't just an ex-fighter but a former World Heavyweight Champion.
Then Marciano knocked him out twice.
@@karlschneider9479 Not sure the second knockout was legit - - 🤔
The mobs control of boxing with that ape Frankie Carbo was real....just ask Jake Lamotta and for this film, Primo Carnera. As always Budd Schulbetg was a masterful writer.
I used to work with a guy who's grandfather was a contender in the 50's named Irish Tommy Collins. Tommy was under contract to Rip Valenti here in Boston and Rip worked with Carbo. The only way Collins could get a title shot was to move up in weight. He moved up and was brutally beaten by Sandy Saddler.
It looks like he got more than just a broken jaw
Toro received a thorough beatdown...he knew DAMN!!! sure he was in a real fight this time...👊👊👊
poor Toro the whole time before getting into this fight was a dunning Krueger
God what a film...better than Raging Bull and On the Waterfront and they are masterpieces! I wish I could get it on TH-cam.
there's this classic boxing film called *the set up*... I think you might like it too
I agree been trying to find this on blu ray. I also recommend Requiem For A Heavyweight with Anthony Quinn.
Similar to what happened to Primo Carnera with his career , although Primo could actually fight.....Long , interesting story for anyone that would be interested....
tell us more .. this is good content..
This was a bloody fantastic movie. I’ve been spreading the words about this super movie for years. Gosh I can almost feel the punches . Imagine being a journey boxer in those days with no backup plan or money to fall back on.
yeah, it sure was. Another boxing film you can look into is titled *The Set up* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Set-Up_%281949_film%29 this is also a great film in it's own right...
They apparently didn't stop fights back then lol
Solo las paraban si el tipo se moría. El boxeo era mucho más duro en aquel entonces
Max Baer was 20 years too old for his role.
@@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow Definitely.
Baer plays the world heavyweight champion 20 years after he lost the world heavyweight title in real life.
@@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow You never heard what?
@@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow You'd never heard that Max Baer was the world heavyweight champion??
@@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow What other films had you seen him in?
And George, the guy in Toro's corner was Jersey Joe Walcott. He is described in the movie as "an old broken down warhorse", yet he had been Heavyweight champion four years before this film was made.
Baer had a heart condition when this was filmed. It would cost him his life not long after. He and his brother Jack were gifted boxers. As noted below, Max was the HWT champion until he lost the title to Braddock. Jethro Bodine, from The Beverly Hillbillies, is his son. There are films of Baer in his prime on YT.
Max Baer's brother's name was Buddy, not Jack and he lost the heavyweight title to James J. Braddock, not Craddock. Get your facts straight.
@@johnadkins5560 Jacob (Jack) Henry "Buddy" Baer (June 11, 1915 - July 18, 1986) was an American boxer and later an actor with parts in seventeen films, as well as roles on multiple television series in the 1950s and 1960s. Straight enough for you pal?
Ok. Good enough. It's just that I'm an avid boxing fan and I hate it when people get things wrong. I admit I don't know everything, but I do know a lot. I give you credit for knowing Buddy Baer's full name. That's one of the few things I didn't know. Kudos to you on that.
@justthink5854 I will find a copy. Thanks for mentioning that title!
@justthink5854Brilliant summary! Looking forward to reading it. Seems like a movie or series could be devoted to the two brothers journey through life. Very gifted family in many ways.
