"Requiem for a heavyweight" is another excellent classic boxing movie. It stars Anthony Quinn and Jackie Gleason.
    Great review!

I liked your review of "The Harder They Fall." You are right this is a tough edgy film. The guy who wrote "The Harder They Fall" also wrote "On the Waterfront." His name, Budd Shulberg. The two films have some similarities. Both movies' have boxers involved with crime figures. Nick Benko in "The Harder they fall" is modeled on a guy named Frankie Carbo a mobster involved in the fight game in the 1950's. Johnny Friendly from "on the waterfront" is loosely based on Albert Anastasia another mobster. Torro in "The harder they fall" is controlled by gangsters and Terry Malloy in "on the Waterfront" was also controlled by gangsters when he was a fighter. In fact, one of the iconic lines in cinema "I coulda been a contender," comes from "On the Waterfront." I hope one day you can compare the two films.

Often overlooked is how good wrestler Mike Lane's performance as Toro was. Thank you for mentioning him.

I'm trying to get better with pointing out those extra details in these old films that makes them so good.

That was a good review. Now you need to review director Mark Robson's earlier boxing film 1949's Champion. It's his first foray into the seedy side of boxing.

Jan Sterling is a very different wife in Billy Wilder's "Ace in the Hole."

YT was being difficult with this one, and hitting me with Copyright Claims for those brief film clips! I had to trim a few of them down. Don't they know I'm trying to give these old classics free publicity?? :)

I think review might have been a bit better if you had told more about the scene where "Jersey Joe" demonstrates to Toro that Toro isn't nearly the tough boxer he believes he is. I think that really sets up the match against the champ. When you mentioned real boxers in the film, you might have mentioned Max Baer, and his famous son.

This film is based on a true story of primo carnera a mob controlled boxer who really believed he was as good as the best he was 6’6 270 pounds slim and to be completely honest this movie was accurate about how fighters were used and abused even to this day. There’s a boxer today who didn’t get paid a dime in their first 10 fights. The business of boxing is a dirty one

Thanks for the additional background. Yeah, it was totally not what I expected, but I really enjoyed the story it told of the darker side of the boxing world of that era.

@@OldMovieRob yeah. In fact the Muhammad Ali act that congress passed stopped the practice of a manager also being your promoter for situations like at the end of the movie. It’s so crazy I watched this for the first time and it blew my mind this was bogarts last film because of how good it was. Oh quick trivia former heavyweight champion max Baer was also in this movie and he beat carnera for the title. The simple minded part of the fighters is honest I’ve seen even modern examples of horrible if not down right no hopers put everything into a fight because they really believe in themselves despite the hard facts of their skill levels. Really loved your review I will definitely watch more 👍
