    A couple of inaccuracies here.
    1. The mono switch is for monitoring of the inputs, not the outputs. In stereo it pans input 1 to the left and input 2 to the right, for if you've plugged in a synth or game audio for example.
    2. The A/B switch is for switching between outputs 1/2 and 3/4 in the headphones, not for switching between speakers at the back. To use output B you have to choose 3/4 as your outputs in software. A DJ would use output B to pre-listen to songs before playing them to the audience. A band would use it to send themselves a metronome that the audience can't hear.

      Yep. Because of everyone is staying home microphones, webcams, audio interfaces, computer gaming parts, etc have sold out or have gone up in price (probably selling for MSRP instead of "street" price or straight up scalper pricing.) It's unfortunate but that is just the state of things. Pricing and stock are better now in January 2021, but I still see things OOS or selling for MSRP/scalper prices.

    Great review, right to the point! I began with the UMC202HD then Upgraded to the UMC1820 for the 8 inputs then later tacked on the ADA8200 for 8 more via ADAT. Even though Behringer is notorious for terrible manuals they provide a good way to get into home recording at a reasonable price. TH-cam has more then enough tutorials to make up for the lousy documentation. Keep those doobliadoo reviews going!

    Another great review, this almost made me jealous/worried I've just ordered a UMC22, but I think that too has an all metal chassis with the same midas preamps, so hopefully the build quality will be decent too now.
    Overall I'm gone for a budget starter setup and picked up the generic Knox Dynamic mic off the back of your review too, (knowing I've got a fair amount of ambient/background noise to contend with) and it is already by itself a decent step-up in quality from the simple headset mic I had been using.
    So with this and the knowledge I've gained from the reviews and podcasts, all I can say is thanks for all the efforts you've been putting in!

    • @crixi__
      @crixi__ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OMG this is literally me! Thank you so much Bandrew! Only thing I'm worried about is the "mix" knob which I am already used to and the UMC22 doesn't have...
      But as we're so close to the $100 price tag, isn't the 204HD comparable to the Scarlet Solo? Are there major differences in audio quality? :)

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hard to say since they don't provide any specs about the interface really. This does have 192kHz as opposed to the 96kHz of the scarlett. But I would probably still pick the Focusrite because based on reviews, I think it's probably more reliable. I haven't had any issued with either.

      Yeah...the UMC22 is an upgraded version of the UM2 which includes a Midas preamp. However, it is limited to a sample rate of 48 kHz (as opposed to the 192 kHz of the HD interfaces). Also, it doesn't have anywhere near the compliment of i/o found on the other more expensive models. Just a stereo out for powered monitors.

    • @utc-8human197
      @utc-8human197 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After days of watching reading reviews on high sampling rate interface, my current conclusion is...
      1. ZOOM UAC-2 - 24bit 192; USB 3.0, solid build, nice intuitive recording mixer with basic DSP effects.
      2. BEHRINGER UMC204HD - 24BIT 192; Midas preamp, solid build, software package attractive, value for money.
      3. AUDIENT ID14 - 24bit 96; pro grade preamp, solid build. Intuitive driver software. Great support and user base.

    I understand this is not tech support. But I've had nothing but issues with this interface. I can either get the mic to put out, or the headphone jack to work. I can never get both to work at the same time. I was on the fence on getting a new machine, but not having this interface pushed me to just do it. And even on another machine with a clean install of windows, I have the exact same issue.
    Please keep reviewing! You've informed me so much of my purchasing over the past year.!!!

      Nogewd, use your system onboard headphone port for your headphones and use Behringer's port for direct monitoring. If you connect only one mic to one channel, you will get sound only on one side of the headphone for direct monitoring. You may need to custom-build a circuit that will make one channel play on both sides of the headphone. By the way, both onboard and Behringer headphone outputs provide 24 bit 192 KHz Studio quality playback.

      Definitely, check out the UMC404HD, it's the best bang for your buck in the whole UMC series, and you can do a lot with TRS outputs (not RCA), as well as 4 inputs - think stereo overheads + kick + snare. I was so happy to see a modded 72 Tele Reissue appear in this video, with what appear to be 7-string EMG active humbuckers? I play a 72 Tele RI with a Dimebucker in the bridge, and a JB in the neck position. (Pro tip: I removed/bypassed the tone knobs to get a little extra OOMPH out of the low end).
    I worked in music and pro audio for almost 20 years, and I'm VERY picky about gear reviews. I don't trust gamers or audiophiles to give me a realistic portrait of gear, because they're often not using the gear the way I would. I trust Podcastage to faithfully review gear that I don't have time to audition myself, and I know that I'm getting an honest appraisal (without negativity or trash talk), without all the "look how smart I am" bullshit that's in so many other gear reviews.
    I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into these vids. Thanks for putting in the work! And nice guitar.

    • @Podcastage

      That's a very fair point, and also why I just said to get one with Midas preamps, rather than just saying to buy the 204HD. Moreover, most youtubers could get away with not getting an HD version since their uploads will be compressed by youtube down to 48kHz or 96kHz (still can't seem to find any decent answers about this).

    I've been using a Blue Yeti microphone for almost 2 years now, and am looking to upgrade. I think I'm pretty much set on picking up a Rode NT1, but am still undecided on which audio interface to get. I only plan to use it for the one microphone and must have zero-latency monitoring to a standard headphone jack. I've narrowed it down to 3 interfaces: this one (the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD), the Steinberg UR12, and the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd gen). Which one would be the best for my situation? Thanks, and sorry for being a noob at this kind of stuff xD

    You're a fountain of misinformation, aren't you ? The Line/Inst switch is to be placed in the Instr position for a microphone, not Line (which is for a line level signal). The Stereo/Mono switch is for direct monitoring only, not to select the output mode (which is always in stereo). The playback RCA A/B jacks audio level is also controlled by the front Main Out volume knob, not just the Main Out on the back. BTW, the PAD button decreases the audio signal level by about -12db. Also, this is the only audio interface in this price range to offer Stereo/Mono switchable, zero latency monitoring.
    This thing blows many other overpriced audio interfaces right out of the water ! But it looks strangely similar to a certain Roland product...hmm.

      Of course. Because it is essentially a sound card in an external box, powered by and using USB as the data bus. With the added benefit of XLR/quarter inch input jacks, and available Phantom power (for condenser mics), and MIDI. The only small drawback is the fact that it reduces the number of available USB ports permanently on a given PC.

    Nobody seems to mention this. There's a high noise floor on the playback outputs, I have mine going to my stereo. I was able to mitigate this by using a range expander (dbx), but if I hadn't had this extra device, the Behringer would be a candidate for the circular file. If I were buying now, I would not buy this unit. I wish I had known before I spent my money.

I had been using a Behringer X1204 Xenex mixer with my PR-40 plugged in along with a Cloudlifter to boost it a bit with the gain turned up pretty high for those Xenex preamps and thought it sounded great. However after using the same set-up into the 404, the gain is tuned WAY down in comparison and it sounds great. All from an interface $40-50 less than the 1204 mixer. This will probably end up replacing the Presonus 44VSL in my mobile podcasting kit

(I can't remember, I know it had two line level inputs and at least one quarter inch input) channel mixer with xeynx preamps. Those sucked, noisy at 45 percent with dynamics. Plus no USB out so i had to run everything to a behringer USB sound card through unbalanced RCA outs. So not cool. THIS INTERFACE THO. I may just buy one for the price alone lol. But seriously, this would be great for a simple two person podcast or basic production. If the midas pre's are as good as you suggest, this'll be a wonderful investment.

    The Pad attenuates A LOT! Like 30dB.
    Personally, I find the Midas preamps to be a bit weak too. Even running a Shure SM58 through a 6 foot cable requires the gain to be up at 3 to 4 o’clock. Considering the dial stops at 5 o’clock, that doesn’t leave much headroom.

      It all depends on the use case. If it's just me recording a single mic, it doesn't matter at all. But if I plan on recording a full drumset with 8 mics, then it is EXTREMELY important. You just need to think about what you're going to be recording, and will you be expanding in the future.
