    Thank you so much!
    I'm using my UMC-404HD with Jamulus software to rehearse live with our 4-piece band , and I've been trying for weeks to figure out how to monitor the USB coming from Jamulus rather than my local sound. (Monitoring the USB stream coming back from Jamulus rather than your local audio helps overcome some of the latency and allows you to better stay in sync with the rest of the group.) Your explanation of the Main vs Playback output, and the Monitor function as it relates to what's heard in the headphones, is perfect!
    And may I say that the Behringer manual for the 404 does not remotely provide a clear explanation of how the Main and Playback outputs function, nor how the Monitor knob affects what you're listening to with regards to the local vs USB audio in your earphones. It's actually not that complicated, but their manual just doesn't give you enough detail to understand it!
    Well done!

    Thank you for this tutorial! It was confusing at first using Ableton Live but I was able to route the metronome and monitor,(audio in my right ear and click in my left ear) through output 1 for headphone jack A, and then stereo out to my camera interface or PA system (depending if im playing a live show in person or streaming) through 3/4 B playback. That way I can have tracks panned for sound quality to the camera and if I want to hear it as stereo in my headphones say after I've established my beat I can just press the B monitor for headphones button and the metronome is gone and I can hear stereo audio to monitor. Lovely!! Just what I wanted! And to eleborate for any Ableton users just make sure your audio settings in preferences is arranged correctly. In my case with the 404HD I need all ins and outs mono and stereo to be on. And so to add to this I can also plug my single PA speaker to output 2 main or playback and have sound simultaneously in conjunction to what I mentioned above. So basiaclly I can record stereo to video while projecting to a small crowd while i perform live and still have the ability to monitor with a click that no one can hear except me. PERFECTO!!!!

      @@TheAudioDabbler Do you know how to route output in Garageband? Doesn't seems to work there. Pretty poor they don't have a full manual for ALL functions. @tommylarsson2025 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ernstzjw6971 Yes thats the basic settings and Garageband can't route to more than Left - Right output as Logic probably can. As I was mainly looking for an extra output for another mix reference speaker I wanted to use the playback output B for that. As I couldnt route the signal in Garageband I thought It wouldn't work. Although, playback output A send the same signal as the main out so if I want to only listen to an extra reference speaker I can just turn the main volume down on Behringer and control the volume on my extra speaker on my Daw. Thats a workaround in Garageband. Can't have it all in a free program.

I guess I could cable that, being careful to avoid feedback ...but wondering, on a long shot, if there’s a software routing way to accomplish the same.

    I had a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" and no sound from the UMC404....this quirk had me confused for a while as I know my way around audio interfaces (I have 5 of them, all working no problem)....Please read on if this is relevant: Remember to turn up the volume controls on the iPad itself. For some reason the digital audio signal is routed via the volume management on the iPad before it gets sent out via the USB back to the interface. I don't know if this applies to other interface brands or not but it is critical to achieving a good output signal.

    One questions: I would like to use the "stereo/mono" button to control the audio coming from my PC, so i have a mono switch available to me at all time. Currently i have the following settings on my UMC 204HD (nearly identical to the 404):
    Audio cables running from playback 1-2 to inputs 1 & 2
    The output selected in windows is OUT 1-2
    Mix knob turned to Input
    Monitor A/B selected to A.
    Connected to pc via USB
    This seems to work, and doesnt seem to create any kind of loop. When selecting mono, the sound is fully mono. I have my monitors connected to the Main Out L & R, and headphones to the headphone jack.
    But there is a weird anomaly:
    The Inputs 1 & 2 start to clip already at about 10-15% input gain when turning Gain 1 & Gain 2 knobs. Even with the Pad button pressed (which "reduces input level for connected sources when engaged."), I am hearing the sound at pretty decent volumes when the knobs are at 0%. If i have the volume in windows turned to 100, the 204HD has clipping light flashing already at 0% input gain.
    Any idea why this could be?

    I've got a question also regarding the routing of the UMC-404HD. I'm thinking of buying this interface if it's possible besides using 2 channels by themselves for Mic In and Bass Guitar In and use the remaining 2 channels for connecting (or sort of inserting) an external Mixer using the 2 In channels and any (which?) of the 2 Out channels of the Interface to be able to connect more things via the Mixer. So my question would be: is my plan achievable with the UMC-404HD and how? Any help is highly appreciated - thanks!

    I have 2 keyboards (both in stereo) and I'm running Mainstage. So, I
    should run the USB from the UMC404HD to my hub (along with the USBs from
    both keyboards, and the USB to my MacBook Pro). Assuming I tell
    Mainstage (or Logic) where I want the output to go, it should work,
    right? For example.... Keyboard 1 is assigned in my DAW to channels
    (1) left and (2) right. Keyboard 2 is assigned in my DAW to channels 3
    (Left) and 4 (Right), respectively. On the back of the UMC404HD, I run
    (1/L) and (2/R) outputs to the left and right inputs for my mixer (for
    Keyboard 1). Then, I run (3/L) and (4/R) to the left and right inputs
    for my mixer (for Keyboard 2). Result, I get a stereo mix from my
    mixer, right?

    Hi i recently baught the interface works perfectly but my question is regarding the UMC control panel. On the "output tab". You get an option to adjust volume for the master channel which i assume will be for the main outs and than you get a tab for outputs 1 & 2 and 3&4 which i will assume is for the playback outputs .my problems is if i adjust the playback output 1&2 volume on the control panel .it also lowers the volume on the master output(mains out)
    Is this the way it should be or they is something i can do to fix this?

Press the "Monitor A/B" button down and now the sound that you don't want the crowd to hear is only coming through your headphones in the front of the Behringer UMC404HD (or 3/4 output in the back of the Behringer UMC404HD).

      That may work but I never tested it. I know that line level like the play back outputs have a different impedance than the headphone outs. Plus you have no control over the PB volume except through the software. If you are trying to hookup multiple headphones then a small 4 channel headphone amp might be a better option. It would also work if you are wanting to monitor out the playback.

    It has come to my understanding that if I'll try to route the different playback outs as different mono outs pb 1+2 will be the same as the main outs? Meaning I can only have the main outs+2 extra mono outs or am I wrong?

    I recently purchased this interface, but I'm having a dickens of time trying to locate the user manual. The unit came with a "starter guide", but my audio engineer needs more specs. Anyone got an idea where it can be downloaded?

    When using a Drynamic Mic for micing an acoustic guitar, are you using it with Line or Instrument level (buton engaged)? And also, the PAD?

    • @Case_
      @Case_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be using the balanced mic input, as in using an XLR connection. Connecting the mic via either instrument or line input will very likely have a lot more noise and weaker signal. The button/switch should have no effect on the XLR input.

    How do you use multiple mics with this interface in GarageBand in MacBook

  • @perrypelican9476
    @perrypelican9476 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought you use iconnectaudio4+. Do you like this one more? Or do you use both? What is mains? In the UK they use mains for the wall power.

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still use both. I wanted a 2nd interface that was bus powered and more portable to use when I am on the go. As far as mains, I am referring to the main outputs as opposed to any alternate output like a sub mix or in the Behringer's case, the 4 playback outs.

    • @TheAudioDabbler

      I do believe you can send to multiple outputs but you cannot control it via the unit. It would need to be controlled some other way, maybe an external A/B switch?

    Thanks, man. An even very comprehensive guide to audio routing for the UMC404 - which I happen to own - where there was none to begin with.
    Still I am stuck in a hole... After years I buried my Audiobox thingy that I used for it's "sufficiency" for years. Although it introduces weird behaviours in the sub bass and bass frequencies that I never was able to fathom, just to suppress. Thought it'd be a groundng issue but that's at least not a general problem. And although the Behringers Preamps are so much better. I mainly do overvoicings with a mono mic plugged in on the XLR on whatever IN. Some people seem to happen to have been able to set up circumstances, under which they get their mic sound in a direct monitor to BOTH channels, speaking of a stereo monitor of a mono input.
    Should it be my lucky day and anyone knows how to reproduce that? Btw I am recording in Wavelab if possible and in Cubase if nothing else helps project wise. Also audacity would be an option but I never really worked with it. I am just not able to do high class overvoicings with my monitor only on one side :D
    But any help for the situation in Wavelab would be sufficient, surely. It's my preferred workflow.
    And I know very well that I shouldn't call you surely.

    That’s for the reply !! I understand kinda what you are saying . I would think that there is a way to overdub a easier way . It seems to me the only way to track with this setup is in real time . For instance , If i lay down my drum track and they decide they want a shaker track or some
    Sort of percussion , how would I listen to the drum tracks I just laid down and then lay down a percussion track ? I can’t seem to do that which cannot be correct . With the UMC404HD I have to turn the mix knob to the right to here playback and then I have drums lagging in the mix . I am hoping I am missing something ...

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      what is your audio buffer set at? what DAW? When you have the mix knob to in, it is direct monitoring, and when its PB, its monitoring the playback. I don't think its the interface, it seems like there is latency in the DAW. So one option, depending on the DAW you are using, would be to turn the mix knob all the way to PB, and use the DAW to monitor the armed track you want to add a shaker on. If that make sense.

    nice vid thanx. this confusion might be of interest or at the very least provoke some laughter. connected main L/R out of a zoom playback device to the main L/R jack outs of the UMC-404HD by accident (TS jacks). its routed via a patch bay in a half-normal configuration. i can hear the playback from my zoom in my monitors. neither level knob/mix knob change playback volume, nor can i change playback level via computer. to clarify i have the umc connected to amp/monitors via the xlr outs. why can i hear the zoom playback? is the signal somehow getting to a mixer stage perhaps because of using theTS rather than TRS jack, or am i going macadamian?

    This was VERY helpful in understanding that most outputs are coming from the USB. How do I send audio to the USB? I'm using a UMC 1820 (the same just bigger) plugged into a PC running Traction Waveform 11 as my DAW/recording software. I tried using that and also Voicemeeter Banana to send audio back and thus be able to plug in speakers to my interface, but I still only get audio out on the 1-2 output, and none of the others. Supposadly this interface has several outputs, but I can only use one.

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to route the audio via your software to get outputs from the other outputs. You cannot do it with just the interface.

    @TheAudioDabbler I want to use either this 404 or the 204 at church.
    I would only use it for playing backing tracks from my laptop.
    If these PB outputs are simultaneous, I would like to use:
    PB 1 & 2 for stereo sounds (pads, effects... )
    PB 3 for mono tracks & 4 for click track.
    Is this possible with this interface?
    I would appreciate your response a lot since I can't find this in the manual.

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should work. They can be stereo pairs or you can split them mono. Just to note, you will need to control the volume using software as there is not any volume knobs for the playback outputs.

    8:49 - You mention that you can route inputs to A & B (1-2 and 3-4). This is exactly what I need to do, send my XLR microphone input to B (3-4).
    I have this plugged into my PC and can't seem to find any application from Behringer to control or configure that. Do you have any suggestions?
    I just picked up Ableton Live 10 Lite hoping that would work but haven't figured it out yet.

    Hello, sir! I'm using the Uphoria 404 for doing a podcast with up to three participants, but so far am only monitoring them myself via phones at the front. If i wanted to allow the others to monitor themselves with headphones so they gain better mic technique (ie not constantly pulling away from the mic randomly) and also so i can hear them thru the front phones and they can hear themselves and each other, what would be the ideal config? Thanks!

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are they virtual or physically in the room with you? If they are physically in the room then getting a headphone amp with multiple outputs would allow each of the guests, including you, to monitor.

    Just getting started helping my church. They have this box and were going to go out to the DSLR like your other video. Which was great! If they have a mixer for remote mics. How do I get that into this unit. Is it only XLR?

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as inputs, the inputs are combo jacks, meaning they will take XLR or 1/4 inch cables. You could go out of the mixer into one of the input jacks depending on how many you are already using.
